Section 26. Amateur Sports Organizations
7.25.26 Amateur Sports Organizations

Overview
  • The Tax Reform Act of 1976 amended IRC 501(c)(3) to exempt from federal income taxation organizations organized and operated exclusively to foster national or international amateur sports competition, provided they do not furnish athletic facilities or equipment. The statute was amended in 1982 by adding IRC 501(j). Conforming changes were made to the charitable contribution provisions of IRC 170, 2055, and 2522. IRC 501(j) is effective retroactively to October 5, 1976, the date of the original amateur sports legislation under IRC 501(c)(3).

Posted by Lincoln Allison Are amateur sports a repository for English civil virtues? Lincoln Allison, a leading academic expert on sport and author of Amateurism in Sport , argues that the robust survival of amateur sport reflects a continued yearning for the values of honour and chivalry. In a previous essay I argued that over the previous generation certain English civil virtues had been eroded by growth and prosperity – or, rather, by the necessary conditions of growth and prosperity. These included amateur and voluntary activity and the world of pubs and clubs. At its simplest this could be seen as a simple mechanical effect as hard work and commuting leave little room for collective and cultural activity. Production and consumption both rise and between them they squeeze out the space for civil society. We work hard, commute hard and consume hard, leaving less space for the pub and the cricket club. In doing so I harked back to my book Condition of England published in 1981 in which I had argued that English economic failure had to be put alongside cultural success, even in economic terms.

Amateur Sports Randy Black writes: "John Allen is correct to point out that the US no longer dominates Olympic ice hockey or basketball to the extent that it did when professional athletes were first allowed to compete. But at least part of the reason is that a huge percentage of those US professional players originate from other nations and as such, play for their birth-nation’s Olympic teams despite earning millions annually in the USA playing for Dallas, LA, NY or other American professional teams. In some cases, those same athletes are US citizens, or living in the US on permanent alien visa permits yet, once the Olympics roll around, hope on a jet and go home to play for Russia, France, Italy, Great Britain and other nations.
Some athletes BORN in the USA but not good enough to make the US Olympic teams, compete on behalf of the national teams of other countries through the loophole of dual citizenship via a parent. California born track star Malachi Davis is a good example. His mom is from London. Having not qualified for the US team, he obtained a British passport July 8, 2004, moved to England three days later where he was selected to the British Olympics track team today. Thus, he will be in Athens representing a country that he had never set foot in until last week".
Randy Black writes: "Re the issues in favor or against amateur sports. During the years prior to the collapse of the USSR, in reality, the Soviets and their satellite republics, fielded “national” teams for Olympic events that were in reality, professional teams. Soviet and other communist nation’s athletes were literally raised by the State, funded, trained, housed, paid a salary and fed on the pretext that they would always represent Russia in international competition. Thus, those pros time and again won medals against the true amateurs from the US and other western nations.

Senators to propose ban on gambling on amateur sports
    January 26, 2000
Web posted at: 3:35 p.m. EST (2035 GMT) From Correspondent Kate Snow WASHINGTON (CNN) Two U.S. senators are expected to introduce a bill next week that would ban betting on college and other amateur sports. In a letter to their colleagues, Sens. Patrick Leahy , D-Vermont, and Sam Brownback , R-Kansas, say their proposed High School and College Gambling Prohibition Act would protect the integrity of college games and help keep young people from getting hooked on gambling. These students say they have bet more in a week than they pay rent The bill also would prohibit all legalized gambling on the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
