    About Us
The Youth Initiative High School was founded in 1996 when a group of high school students from the Viroqua area decided to take responsibility for their education. Today, YIHS continues to emphasize the development of student responsibility, initiative, and citizenship in all aspects of school life. Students are full voting members of the school community, serving alongside parents and faculty on the Board of Directors and on many other committees. YIHS students also take responsibility for raising a significant part of the school's annual budget through a variety of independently organized fundraising activities. They are also responsible for cleaning and maintaining the school's facilities. YIHS uses the Waldorf curriculum, which is based on the ideas of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner (1861 - 1925). Waldorf schools exist on all continents, with over 700 schools worldwide. Working out of an image of the human being as a three-fold human being consisting of body, soul, and spirit, Waldorf education strives to integrate head, heart, and hands into the fabric of school life. On the basis of this philosophy, YIHS pursues a balance of academic rigor in the sciences, humanities, and foreign languages, compassion and cooperation in social life, and creativity and excellence in the practical and fine arts. Although it started with only 11 students in 1996, the Youth Initiative High School today has an enrollment of over 50 students in grades 9-12. YIHS is an independent high school and does not receive funds from federal, state, or local government. Tuition at YIHS is arranged on a flexible basis in order to enable students from families of all income levels to participate in the school, with several students each year working to pay their own tuition. YIHS has been recognized as a Waldorf initiative by the

Which state has better high school basketball, Minnesota or Wisconsin?
While that is likely a difficult question to answer definitively, fans of prep hoops in both states will get the opportunity to watch five of Minnesota’s best go up against five of Wisconsin’s best during the second annual Border Battle, set for Saturday at Verona Area High School.
Wisconsin won three of the five contests held a year ago in the inaugural Border Battle at Tartan High School in Oakdale, Minn.
This year’s event gets under way with Maranatha Christian Academy taking on Barneveld at noon. The Border Battle once again is co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook and The Breakdown.

Milwaukee's Custer High School used the grant to build a concession stand, resurface the natural turf, and install bleachers, goal posts, a scoreboard and team benches at Custer Community Field. The grant awarded to the Boys and Girls Club of Green Bay helped pay for field grading and resurfacing, tree plantings, electrical system upgrading and new scoreboard installation at Sam Miller Athletic Field. The grants, awarded by the Green Bay Packers, National Football League, NFL Players Association (NFLPA), and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), are part of $2.5 million in field refurbishment awards allocated to community groups in 19 cities nationwide this past year. - More Info Pop Warner Football For the last seven years, the Green Bay Packers have invited local Pop Warner leagues to Lambeau Field to run plays during halftime. In addition, the Ray Nitschke practice field was made available for Pop Warner league games. Players Daryn Colledge and Cullen Jenkins also supported the young football players in the community through appearances at their end-of-the-season banquets.

Photo Credit: Suzanne Tucker By roland ruiz Gear Checklist for Youth Football There is no youth team sport in America with as much potential risk for injury as football. By its fundamental nature of running, blocking and tackling, football puts the human body in compromised positions that can make it particularly susceptible to injury. Hence, proper equipment is essential. From head to toe, the body can be severely impacted by the game of football. Some of the most vulnerable parts of the body include the head and neck area, which often bears the brunt of hits, and the knee joints and lower extremities where running and pivoting place a burden on ligaments and tendons. So let's start at the top. Torso Of all the body, perhaps the area most exposed in football is the torso: meaning the rib cage, abdomen and lower back area. Still, in modern times, new developments in protective gear has created protective gear such as back plates, which, like cowboy collars can be attached to the lower shoulder pads to help protect the lower back from forced contact. In addition, flac jackets, which envelope the entire lower torso much like a wide belt or girdle also can be worn for protection of the rib cage. The disadvantage, if any, to wearing these accessories however is that they may make a player feel constrained or limited in movement. Below the belt - A protective cup is essential, but beyond that a full set of padding should include pads for each hip, tail bone, thighs and knees. These are pads usually made of vinyl-protected foam and fit inside regulation football pants.
