Winter Sports Safety
Heading for the ice, snow, or slopes? Bundle up with this safety advice and have a great time! Before you sled, ski, or skate Dress for safety. Dress everyone in several layers of tops and pants under warm jackets and add hats, gloves or mittens, and waterproof boots. Check for hanging drawstrings that can catch on sleds, ski lifts, and other equipment. (It's the little toggles at the end that hook onto things.) Stuck drawstrings can cause serious injury, so remove them from hoods and necks and shorten those that hang from jacket bottoms. Use short, not long scarves and tuck them into jackets. Respect the cold : "When the temperature is below freezing, beware of frostbite and hypothermia," says Dr. Greensher, medical director of Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. and former chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics Injury Prevention Committee. Check on kids often to make sure they don't get too cold. Beware that cold air increases the risk of exercise-induced asthma.

General skiing, skating, sledding and snowboarding safety tips (not intended to be a complete list see links below for more): Get the right gear for the activity. Don't buy equipment that's too old or too big for your child, or that's broken or damaged in some way. Always stay in control of your equipment and yourself. It is not cool to put the lives of others at risk. Young children should sled feet first, not head first. Don't allow too many people to pile on. Make sure the hill, piece of mountain or ice ahead of you and around you is clear of sudden drops, trees, people, buildings and other obstacles. Don't ever allow a child to ride a sled down a hill onto a pond, a river, a rocky area, or a road even if you're sure it's safe. If you're going where no one has gone before, first learn how to do it properly. Then, do it that way. If you crash into someone ahead of you, you are responsible. People ahead of you have the right of way. Remember that others are just learning, and they make mistakes. Ski defensively by giving others a wide berth.

    Winter Sports Safety
In winter sports, people must protect themselves against the cold in addition to taking the precautions involved with most other sports. A special hazard is a condition called hypothermia, in which the body temperature falls below its normal level of 98.6 °F. (37 °C). The symptoms of hypothermia include uncontrollable shivering, slurred speech, stumbling, and drowsiness. If left untreated, the condition may lead to death. Hypothermia can occur even if the temperature is above freezing, especially if a person's clothing is wet.
Winter Clothes: To help prevent hypothermia, wear wool clothing. Wool provides better insulation than other fabrics do. Wear loose garments that do not restrict the circulation of the blood. Several layers of light clothing are better than one heavy layer. Cover your head, hands, and feet because they lose heat quickly.
Snowmobiling is increasingly popular in many northern climates and has led to a large number of accidents. Speeding causes many snowmobile mishaps. Never go faster than the safe speed for your vehicle, and never drive too fast for the snow conditions. A snowmobile should not be operated in less than 4 inches (100 millimeters) of snow. If possible, drive only in daylight. About three-fourths of the fatal snowmobile accidents occur after dark. Be especially careful when crossing roads and watch for such obstacles as tree stumps, fallen logs, and hidden branches.
