Wheelchair tennis is fastest growing sport for disabled
ADVERTISEMENT Published December 30, 2007 Annapolis tennis group Jaime Veracka, the founder of the 10-year old Annapolis Area Tennis School, is a passionate advocate of wheelchair tennis. Veracka is a certified tennis instructor who has worked with several wheelchair athletes over the last few years including Brenda Gilmore, a Prince George County tennis instructor and wheelchair player. "I saw someone in wheelchair and asked him if he played sports, thinking in the back of my mind he might want to try wheelchair tennis," Veracka said. "We went out and not too far into the first lesson, he was hooked."
Veracka says the greatest reward from her efforts is seeing the joy on the faces of her players as they fearlessly endeavor to succeed in playing the game. The International Tennis Federation in London, at www.itftennis.com, sponsors worldwide competition and maintains international rankings of wheelchair competition.
Said Veracka: "The main difference between wheelchair tennis and regular tennis, in addition to the option to take the ball on two bounces, is the mobility of the player. Moving and getting to the ball has patterns distinctively different from able-bodied players. Various drills for these movement patterns are learned and practiced, as well as the mechanics of generating torque (resulting in power) for the wheelchair player."

Wheelchair Tennis - French Open
Photo:ITF Tennis
The 1st annual French Open on the red clay of Roland Garros started yesterday. Lucy Shuker bageled Karin Suter Erath 6-0 6-0 for her biggest win in Series one competition and as usual the juggernaut Esther Vergeer is rolling over her opponents. I don't dare say competition because frankly there just isn't any for her.
As far as the men's side is concerned there are some discrepancies on the ITF website. The ITF says

Since its beginnings in 1976, wheelchair tennis has grown from an exhibition event to an officially-recognized Paralympic sport.
And what makes it even better is that wheelchair tennis can be played on any regular tennis court, with no modification to racquets and balls. The only rule difference is that the wheelchair player gets two bounces of the ball before it has to be hit, instead of one.
The Sports Association of Gaylord Hospital, Wallingford, Conn., a DS/USA chapter, encourages beginners to try the sport at an annual clinic held every Spring.
Chair users need to learn to grip the racquet differently than able-bodied players because they need to hold the racquet and push the chair at the same time. Many beginners want to keep the racquet in their lap while they push, but that results in not being ready to return the ball from the opponent.
The racquet is held in the dominant hand with four fingers, leaving the thumb free. This leaves the pad of the hand free, giving the player a contact point with the wheel or push rim. But the free hand does the majority of the work on the court, because it is pushing and turning the chair constantly to get into the best position to return the ball.
The Hub Smith said wheelchair users new to the game need to understand the importance of the hub and how to move into and out of it.

Teenage wheelchair tennis player an inspiration
I met a 17-year-old kid from Issaquah who just joined the Issaquah High School boys tennis team.
Chandler Balkman lost his leg in a boating accident last summer so he plays tennis in a wheelchair . The chair is designed for sports use with a fifth wheel in the back to prevent it from tipping over.
Chandler has played tennis since he was a kid, but now he's learning the game all over again...on wheels.
State interscholastic rules allow wheelchair players two bounces of the ball instead of one.
Chandler will compete in doubles against players who are not in wheelchairs.
The guy is amazing. Posted by Linda Brill on September 3, 2007 6:14 PM Permalink
