Wheelchair basketball is a dynamic, high skill, team sport. The sport's players display speed and precision from their wheelchairs while performing all the skills that make basketball an exciting, fast paced game to watch or play. Spectators are immediately drawn to the game making it one of the most popular Paralympic sports. Eight top international nations competed for the title of Paralympic World Cup champions at the Manchester Velodrome between Monday 7th and Thursday 10th May 2006.
In a breathtaking Men's final Canada provided a stunning comeback to snatch victory from Australia to claim the gold medal 49-47. GB recorded an emphatic 74-37 victory over the Netherlands to the bronze. In the Women's pool, it was Japan that saw off Spain with style in a resounding 50-17 victory to claim the gold. France took the bronze medal with a 48-25 victory over GB. Click here to see the wheelchair basketball schedule Athletics

Front Page Previous Story Next Story National Wheelchair Basketball Athletes Bring Sports Passion to NIH By Anne Philips and Carlton Coleman For only the second time in recent memory, the parking lot in front of Bldg. 1 was cleared to make way for street ball. The Maryland Ravens, a team of nationally ranked wheelchair athletes, played a vigorous game of basketball against a squad of enthusiastic NIH Police. Earnest but new to the game, the police soon showed themselves to be unprepared for the physical and cognitive demands of wheelchair propulsion and play. The exhibition game inaugurated NIH's annual observance of National Disability Awareness Month. On behalf of NIH, Stephen A. Ficca, director of the Office of Research Services, greeted the Ravens and opened the exhibition to a spirited crowd. The Ravens easily trounced the NIH squad 51 to 49, despite the police starting out with an unearned 40-point lead. While wheelchair basketball is similar to the running game, it is also characterized by its own unique style. The high-intensity sport reveals its own system of attack, possessing a unique dribbling rule to accommodate the movement of athletes in wheelchairs. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the game. A second game (see sidebar below), pitting the Ravens against another NIH squad, Double Helix, was held later in the Clinical Center.

Wheelchair basketball retains most major rules and scoring of FIBA basketball, and maintains a 10-foot basketball hoop and standard basketball court. The exceptions are rules which have been modified with consideration for the wheelchair. For example, "travelling" in wheelchair basketball occurs when the athlete touches his wheels more than twice after receiving or dribbling the ball. The individual must pass, bounce or shoot the ball before he or she can touch their wheels again.
Wheelchair basketball has intense competition on the international level, and competitions include the Paralympic Games, an event held for athletes with physical disabilities in the Olympic host city two weeks after the Olympic Games, and the Gold Cup, a qualifying tournament held two years after every paralympics. Major players include Canada, Australia, USA, England, the Netherlands, and Japan.

SCI NETWORK/ADVENTIST REHAB HOSPITAL OF MD SUPPORT NEW WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL TEAM
The SCI Network and Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland (formally Kessler-Adventist) in Rockville, Maryland have formed an alliance with a local wheelchair basketball team. Some of the team members of the newly formed Rolling Knights have been an unofficial farm team for the National Rehabilitation Hospital Ambassadors. Many of the Ambassadors now play with the Knights . Like their mentors, the Ambassadors , the Knights are about more than basketball. Education and community involvement are at the heart of both teams With new sponsorship from SCI Network and Adventist Rehab Hospital of Maryland of Rockville, Maryland, the Knights now become independent. The Knights players have a history of public education through exhibition games and Disability Awareness Programs held throughout the Washington Metropolitan area. The Knights are a member of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA). The NWBA was formed in 1946 as a result of wheelchair basketball's popularity among war veterans. The NWBA currently has over 200 teams that comprise six separate divisions: Men's Divisions I, II, and III, Women's, Collegiate and Juniors. Game rules, play and playoff formats are very similar to those of the NCAA." The Knights will begin as a Division III team, but should advance rapidly to Division II.

O rganized wheelchair basketball was started in the same year at both ends of the US. The California Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) and the New England Chapter of the same organization both agree that it started sometime in 1946 in the Veterans Administation (VA) hospitals. It spread across the nation to VA hospitals in Boston, Chicago, Memphis, Richmond and New York. Before long, the sport had spread across the border to Canada and across the ocean to England. By 1948 there were six teams in the US, all members of the PVA and all functioning from VA hospitals. In that year, the Birmingham, California team received a sponsored tour - by plane - to play paraplegic teams across the country. This tour spawned the formation of the first wheelchair basketball team outside of a VA hospital. The first 'civilian' hometown team was named the Kansas City Wheelchair Bulldozers, later the Kansas City Rolling Pioneers. The Flying Wheels of California won the first National PVA Championship. Their name became well known because the Wheels made 10 cross-country tours. These trips did much raise public awareness of wheelchair basketball, paraplegics and other severely disabled persons.

12 of the top wheelchair basketball teams in the nation competed in the 2007 Mayor’s Cup Tournament at Manhattan College and Horace Mann High School over Columbus Day weekend. The Dallas Mavericks successfully defended their Division II title and the CRS Hot Wheels took home the Division III championship.
The Mavericks, led by tournament MVP Bobbie Nickelberry, were clearly in a class by themselves. Dallas went 5-0 with an average margin of victory of 42 points. In the finals, Nickelberry guided the way with 22 points and 13 rebounds en route to a 72-47 victory over the New York Rolling Knicks. The Knicks’ Eddie Lopez (classification III), Mavs’ Chuck Allen (classification II) and Ghana’s Mensah Richard (classification I) were named to the Division II All-Tournament Team.
The CRS Hot Wheels of Los Angeles dominated Division III, going undefeated and beating teams by an average of 27 points. In the final match against the Connecticut Spokebenders, the Hot Wheels rode tournament MVP Robert Mena to a 59-38 win. Division III All-Tournament Team honors went to Connecticut’s Josh Rodriguez (classification II), Christy Cruz (classification I) of the Bulova Renegades and Rochester’s Jamie Gilmore (classification III).
Ghana’s Greater Accra Regional Team was the first team from outside of North America to participate in the Mayor’s Cup since the tournament’s inception in 2001. The Greater Accra team was comprised of the top wheelchair basketball players from Ghana, including members of Ghana’s Paralympic Team. The squad, which featured the tournament’s leading rebounder Mensah Richard (12.0 RPG), quickly became the favorite amongst the fans and other teams.
