By JACK KELLY / Associated Press
Lancaster New Era Published: Jan 14, 2008 11:02 AM EST PITTSBURGH - On the scoreboard it was another defeat, 35-30 to the Youngstown Hot Wheels, but coach John Sikora, 54, was awfully proud of his Steel City Starz.
"You did a lot of good things out there today," Sikora told his players, all wheelchair-bound women. "You should feel good about how you played."
The Steel City Starz, founded seven years ago, is one of 15 women's wheelchair basketball teams in the country. With the early December defeat, their record fell to 1-6, but that's chiefly because they had to play most of their games against men's teams, Sikora says. There are more than 200 men's wheelchair basketball teams.
But playing the men should help prepare his ladies for the National Women's Wheelchair Basketball Tourney, which will be held Feb. 28-March 1, in Warm Springs, Ga., Sikora says.

    Wheelchair-using Children Learn Basketball Basics
Ten year old Cece Ndokwu of Stamford, CT, flanked by United Spinal Association Nets wheelchair basketball team players Jim Jeffreys and Tom McDonald, takes aim at the beginners height basket at a wheelchair basketball clinic for kids with disabilities, held on Saturday, October 20th at the Brooklyn Sports Club. Pictured is retired New Jersey Nets forward Albert King with seven United Spinal Nets players. From left to right front row, Jason Soricelli (Selden, NY), Jose Garcia (Perth Amboy, NJ), Joe Bruno (Paramus, NJ). Second row, Dylan Levine (Paramus, NJ), Denton Johnson (Portchester, NY), Albert King, Jimmy Jeffreys (Patterson, NJ), and Tom McDonald (Clark, NJ). Sponsors of the event included Forest City Ratner Companies, Independence Care Systems of New York City, the Brooklyn Sports Club, United Spinal Association, and member team players from the Eastern Wheelchair Basketball Conference. For participating children, basketball skills taught included wheelchair movement, passing, dribbling, and shooting. Wheelchairs specially designed for adaptive sports were provided. Another highlight of the day was the visit and discussion by former Net Albert King, who spoke to the experienced and beginning players about the importance of working hard, and giving their best effort each time they take the court. The gracious Mr. King even jumped into a wheelchair built for basketball, and he learned first-hand that maneuvering the chair is not as easy as it might appear.

It is very important for people with disabilities to be involved in sports and activities if possible. It is good physical therapy and psychologically advantageous, helping self confidence and giving opportunities to socialize. These sports, including wheelchair basketball, can be played as a fun activity and at an international level of competition.
Following WWII, there were many US servicemen confined to a wheelchair, and the first record of wheelchair basketball taking place was in 1946 when veterans played each other. The sport grew in popularity, eventually crossing to many other parts of the world.
In England, the sport started at a famous hospital called Stoke Mandeville. Its spinal injuries department is one of the largest in Europe and advances in treatment and rehabilitation there have made it a very valuable resource. The staff encouraged playing sports and wheelchair basketball games began in 1956. The hospital went on to help found the sport's governing body, the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation.
Today, there are several international competitions and the sport has played an important role at the Paralympic Games since its first inclusion at the Rome Games in 1960. The Gold Cup is a qualifying event that takes place two years after the Paralympics. Currently, the sport is dominated by the USA, Canada, Australia, England, Japan and the Netherlands.
