From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Wheelchair basketball is a sport played primarily by people with disabilities. In some countries such as Canada, Australia and England, able-bodied athletes are allowed to compete alongside other athletes on mixed teams. It is based on basketball with some adaptations to reflect the presence of the wheelchair , and to harmonize the different levels of disabilities players have. All teams which compete above a recreational level use a classification system to evaluate the functional abilities of players on a point scale of 1 to 4.5. In places where teams are integrated, able-bodied athletes would be classified as a 5, and an individual with the highest degree of disability (such as full paraplegia below the chest) would have the classification of 1.0. Classification is an international regulation for playing wheelchair basketball, where competitions restrict the number of points allowable on the court at one time. However, at this time, athletes are only allowed to compete internationally if they have a disability. Wheelchair basketball retains most major rules and scoring of FIBA basketball, and maintains a 10-foot basketball hoop and standard basketball court. The exceptions are rules which have been modified with consideration for the wheelchair. For example, "travelling" in wheelchair basketball occurs when the athlete touches his wheels more than twice after receiving or dribbling the ball. The individual must pass, bounce or shoot the ball before he or she can touch their wheels again.

wheelchair basketball is one of the most widely recognized sports for athletes The AAASP season ends with the state wheelchair basketball Championship
http://www.adaptedsports.org/leagues/basketball/index.html

Wheelchair Basketball is one of the most widely recognized sports for athletes with disabilities and is of one two AAASP sports organized during the winter. It is played according to NCAA rules with only minor adaptations to accommodate wheelchair use. The wheelchair is considered part of the body, offensive players are allowed four seconds in the lane and there is no double-dribble. As in Indoor Wheelchair Soccer, teams play within either Divisions A or B. Division B teams use an 8 ½-foot hoop and a NCAA women's basketball and the more highly developed Division A players use a standard 10-foot hoop and NCAA men's basketball. The AAASP season ends with the state Wheelchair Basketball Championship tournament, where the best Division A and B teams from across Georgia compete for their respective championship titles. Eligibility
Eligible participants, whose primary disability must be physical, are boys and girls ages 6 to 21 years and attending grades 1-12. They are able to walk unassisted, with devices, or use manually propelled wheelchairs. All participants must compete in a wheelchair, however, power wheelchairs are not permitted.

For those of you who drive and don't have a NYCPPD permit, we can arrange for you to park in an indoor garage on 33rd between 8th and 9th at a cost of only $15, if you don't believe you will be able to find parking on the street. You must reserve in advance. Please be aware that New York City does not honor any other disabled placard/permit (even the New York State permit) and the average parking ticket is $115.

National Wheelchair Basketball Association Champions
59th National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament
March 30-31; Lexington,Kentucky The first DI semifinal matched the Milwaukee Wheelchair Bucks against BC. The Bucks had the unenviable task of facing BC and trying to contain Patrick Anderson, who led DI during the regular season averaging 28 points and more than ten rebounds a game. Early, Anderson seemed content with getting the rest of the team involved and BC responded by building a 16-point halftime lead, 41-25. The Bucks kept it close, thanks to the three-point shooting of Dave Durepos, who finished with 22 points including going six-of-nine from the behind the arc; however Anderson et al were too much, advancing to face the winner of the second DI semifinal, 84-55. Anderson led three teammates in double figures with 33 points, fifteen rebounds and 12 assists. Richard Peter added 18 points and 10 rebounds while Brian McLennon added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Anderson got BC going with a steal and uncontested layup, in what turned out to be a precursor to a second-half scoring flurry. Jason Van Beek answered off an assist from Glasbrenner to tie the score. That set the template for the quarter, BC would score and Dallas would answer. Anderson assisted on the last four BC baskets of period, including three in a row to Brian McLennon. Glasbrenner was more than up to the challenge, finishing with seven points and an assist. BC led after one quarter, 18-15. Although the Mavericks trailed, Schulte had yet to take a shot. Instead he focused on getting his teammates involved. In their final regular season game, Glasbrenner and Schulte combined for 51 points on the way to the most lopsided outcome in the season series, Dallas 87-64. With Glasbrenner playing well, it seemed only a matter of time before Schulte heated up. BC, however, had come up with a new plan of attack.

Wheelchair Basketball Wheelchair basket ball has proved to be a sport which can give disabled children immense happiness and independence. The sport enables children with even the severest disability to participate and play as part of a team. The Richard Langhorn Trust became the Sponsors of the National Junior Games in 1997, and has been involved since then. As well as annual sponsorship of the event the RLT have bought personalised sports chairs for some promising young players, who, without the support of the Trust would not be able to take part in the sport. In Partnership with the GBWBA
The RLT has now entered into a new partnership with the GBWBA, which will involve financing a set of second hand chairs which can be loaned to new clubs and teams who are just starting out in the sport. Once a club is properly established and has properly organised funding, the set of wheelchairs can be loaned to another club. This enables more and more young people the ability to try the sport. The Richard Langhorn Trust has been instrumental in raising the profile for the sport through continued support of the Junior Championships and the National Development Programme.
