Vegan Weightlifting: What Does the Science Say?
By Jack Norris, RD Many weightlifters think a vegan diet might be detrimental to their efforts because of the lower protein content of a typical vegan diet. Other weightlifters feel that a vegan diet enhances their training regimen by reducing fatigue and improving general health. Unfortunately, there are no studies looking directly at vegan weight- lifters, but there is a fair amount of research that can be used to extrapolate to vegans. While reading this article, keep in mind that weightlifting can be divided into two types:
  • Bodybuilding to achieve the most noticeable muscles. Powerlifting to produce the largest amounts of strength.
Energy
Carbohydrates, fat, protein, and alcohol all provide energy. Resistance training, exercises where muscles push or pull against some force, is used to develop and maintain muscular strength and requires an increase in energy above that of sedentary individuals. The amounts vary depending upon training regimen, as well as other factors, including exercise efficiency, gender, non-exercise habits, and genetics. Because of the variation in needs, there is no one easy formula for caloric requirements; it is a matter of experimentation. It is important to note that not eating enough calories to meet needs will tend to reduce muscle mass. Eating adequate calories spares muscle protein that would otherwise be used for energy. Paying attention to hunger signals can be a good guide in knowing whether you are eating enough energy. For a general ballpark figure, novice male weightlifters increased muscle mass and size, and lowered body fat, on a diet of about 18 calories/lb of body weight per day (3240 calories/day for a 180-lb person).

Training Differently This article is based on my experience over the course of the year with ‘training differently.’ As I’ve learned to train differently, I believe I’ve hit on an ideal way to train for virtually everyone.
Background:
Ever since I began weight training as a 13 year old, the objective was always to lift heavy weights. This has been true through every training incarnation that has spanned almost a half century. It was even true in more recent years when I have used much better form and longer duration repetitions. It always made sense because I was quite good at using lots of resistance in most movements. I enjoyed training that way and rarely got hurt. I also was able to continue to use amounts of resistance in many exercises well into my 50’s that were about the same as resistance that I used in the same or similar exercises many years before. There was no reason to change something that worked so well.
The Impetus to Change - Reaching an Impasse:
A few years ago, things began to change. My joints became inflamed when I used a high level of resistance in certain movements. There seemed to be a threshold of force that my joints could no longer accommodate. I was smart enough to stay below that level of force.

The apparent simplicity of lifting the barbell from the ground and over the head in one or two movements is deceiving. Weightlifting requires a combination of power, speed, technique, concentration and timing.

History As a basic athletic activity and a natural means to measure strength and power, the lifting of weights was present in both the ancient Egyptian and Greek societies. Weightlifting was among those few sports which featured on the programme of the first modern Olympic Games, in 1896, in Athens.
