    History
Weightlifting was on the program at the first modern Olympics in 1896 with two events: The one-hand lift and the two-hand lift. There were similar events in 1904 and 1906. Weight categories were established in 1920, with medal standings based on the aggregate of multiple types of lifts. There were three lifts in 1920: The one-hand snatch and the one-hand and two-hand clean and jerk. In 1924, there were five: The one- and two-hand snatch, one- and two-hand clean and jerk, and the two-hand press From 1928 through 1972, the three standard lifts were the press, the snatch, and the clean and jerk. Since 1976, there have been only two lifts, the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each lifter is given three attempts at each type of lift. If there is a tie, it's decided in favor of the lifter with the lower body weight. Weight limits have changed several times over the years. Those shown are for the 2000 Olympics.

Weightlifting: Bad for your blood pressure?
Is weightlifting safe if I have high blood pressure?
    - Fred / Washington
Mayo Clinic hypertension specialist Sheldon Sheps, M.D., and colleagues answer select questions from readers.
    Answer
Weightlifting once was discouraged in people with high blood pressure. But this is no longer the case. Regular exercise, including moderate weightlifting, provides many health benefits, including helping to lower blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, talk to your doctor before starting any exercise program. Your doctor can help you develop an exercise program tailored to your needs and medical conditions. Your doctor can also determine whether you need any activity restrictions. If you have high blood pressure, here are some tips for getting started on a weightlifting program:
    • Learn and use proper form when lifting to reduce the risk of injury. Don't hold your breath. Holding your breath during exertion can cause dangerous spikes in blood pressure. Instead, breathe easily and continuously during each lift. Lift lighter weights and do more repetitions. Heavier weights require more strain, which causes a greater increase in blood pressure. You can challenge your muscles with lighter weights by increasing your repetitions.

    A Smattering of Training Programs
At the USA Weightlifting Regional Development Center, we get lots of requests for copies of the programs we use. This is a bit of a problem as we use so many. A single model of training cannot accomodate the broad spectrum of trainees we service. Every program included below can be useful for a while and in specific types of trainees, but every coach must be able to design their own program for the specific needs of their unique trainees. What we have here can serve as examples but you can't base your whole coaching system on them. We never stop experimenting with programming and looking for improvements so what you read here may not be used any more at the RDC, BUT, when we did use it, it worked. A new text on programming for beginners through advanced trainees is available through the ExRx.net Store called

Stronger grip. More reps. More comfort. No more sore hands; or your money back! Courtesy of MET-Rx USA, Inc. "In 2004 I won the MET-Rx Body Challenge. During years of lifting, I would buy a pair of leather weight lifting gloves every three months. The stitching came undone, the leather would tear, they'd get stretched out, not fit, or start to smell. Now, I use NewGrips and I'll NEVER use anything else. Not only is the price right, but they protect my hands, keep them cool, support my wrists, give me a much better grip, and they're nearly indestructible. I'm big because I lift heavy, and I'm able to lift heavy because I use NewGrips.
