Jump to: navigation search This article is about the sport of weightlifting. For the muscle-building activity involving weights, see weight training . For using weights to develop physique, see bodybuilding A weightlifter about to jerk 180 kg Weightlifting (Olympic style) is a sport in which competitors attempt to lift heavy weights mounted on steel bars called barbells , the execution of which is a combination of power flexibility , concentration, skill, will power, discipline, athleticism, fitness, technique, mental and physical strength. The term "weightlifting" is often informally used to refer to weight training . Olympic weightlifting trains the athlete for functional strength, utilizing the body's major muscle groups. For this reason, the Olympic lifts (or simplified versions such as the power snatch or clean) are extensively used in training for other sports such as American Football . Weight lifting is a plays a vital role in the success of many athletes but it can also be an athletes worst enemy. Technique is the most important part is weight lifting and with out proper technique weight lifters will get hurt and before they are able to gain strength and muscle they have to heal their muscles. Giving your muscles rest is also just as important as working your muscles. When lifting weights the muscles are actually being torn into small pieces and when they become over worked they tend to give in and become injured. That is why it is just as important to rest (let your muscles heal) properly.

Weight Lifting and Weightlifting Tips
Everyone wants to have a good physic in order to be the cynosure of all eyes. Weight lifting exercises are physical exercises which help one to develop a bigger stronger chest. Like any other muscle group the middle part of the body also needs to be trained, it is weight lifting which helps in developing a washboard set of abs. One can also widen the muscles of the back by weight lifting exercises. Shoulders which are amongst the most difficult parts of the body can be strengthened with weight training exercise. The biceps or triceps can also be developed by lifting weights. One can also grow strong muscular legs by regularly lifting weights. Therefore proper weight lifting will help anyone irrespective of age to build up and shape up muscles and improve muscular stamina. The first and foremost thing before weight lifting one has to create a goal for what ones to achieve. Poor and unfocused weight lifting won't help in achieving the goal and therefore it is necessary to stay focused on the goal. In order to perform these exercises, one must follow a smart workout regime. Three simple principles are to be followed hard, heavy and smart weight lifting, quality nutrition and quality rest. All the three things are to be followed if one wants to succeed in building muscles. If any one of these principles are not properly followed then one gradually loses the potential to develop muscles and one will lose interest in the muscle building programme. This is the most important guideline in the muscle building process.

2006 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallists and World Championships representatives Weightlifting is arguably the most spectacular of all Olympic sports. Weightlifting epitomises the human desire to seek out challenges, to attempt to do what is seemingly impossible, and to succeed. At the highest level, weightlifting is very much a contest between an athlete and his or her belief in themselves. It is a pure test of flesh and blood against iron and gravity.
