"Older women must seriously consider proper exercise and dietary habits." Many older women question the benefits of strength training but a lot of research has proven the vast physiological and psychological benefits of weight training exercises when added into a general healthy fit lifestyle. It's unfortunate, but many women over the age of thirty don't really think about the effects of getting older until they get closer to age fifty. But research has shown that the sooner you start to take action against the effects of aging, the better. So with this information it would appear that weight training in combination with proper nutrition, as you hit thirty years of age, is very important. Don't you think that it would be great if you were capable of doing the many leisure time activities you want to, regardless of your age?
"Strength Training May Be The Missing Ingredient For Older Women!"
For all older women, and by older women it means any woman over the age of 30, in addition to regular cardiovascular exercise, many health professionals recommend that all older women engage in regular strength training.

First we explain the many benefits of participating in a strength-training program and then provide you with invaluable information ranging from ‘must-know’ weightlifting terms to safety precautions that affect previous medical conditions, in order to avoid future injuries and/or physical complications. We will also discuss the mindset necessary for becoming successful, including ways of making time for your workout, of staying motivated, of understanding and accepting your body type, and the importance of concentration. In addition, we will discuss the best ways to measure your progress and what to expect if you discontinue weightlifting.
We will cover the three factors affecting strength, the difference between types of strength-training equipment (machines, free weights, etc.), the truth about steroids, and information about the importance of incorporating cardiovascular exercise, stretching, and proper nutrition into your lifestyle.
The last part of our strength-training program discusses the many advanced strength-training techniques beneficial for those who have already experienced the beginning and intermediate stages of our program and who have also used the overcoming-plateaus suggestions. These intense techniques give outstanding results when followed properly.

Strength training is a vital part of a balanced exercise routine that includes aerobic activity and flexibility exercises. Regular aerobic exercise, such as running or using a stationary bike, makes your muscles use oxygen more efficiently and strengthens your heart and lungs. When you strength train with weights, you're using your muscles to work against the extra pounds (this concept is called resistance). This strengthens and increases the amount of muscle mass in your body by making your muscles work harder than they're used to. Most people who work out with weights typically use two different kinds: free weights (including barbells, dumbbells, and hand weights) and weight machines . Free weights usually work a group of muscles at the same time; weight machines typically are designed to help you isolate and work on a specific muscle. For instance, you can do a

How do we get stronger? A muscle will only strengthen when forced to operate beyond its customary intensity (overload). Overload can be progressed by increasing the: (1) Resistance e.g. adding more weight.
    (2) Number of repetitions with a particular weight.
    (3) Number of sets of the exercise.
    (4) Intensity, i.e. reducing the recovery periods. Which weight training exercises?
The exercise must be specific to the type of strength required, and is therefore related to the particular demands of the event or aim of the individual (specificity). Design your routine to work your larger muscle groups first, such as your chest and back, prior to working the smaller muscles like the biceps and triceps. This aids in warming up your smaller muscles, and allowing you to lift heavier weights, simply because your smaller muscles aid in both the lift, and keeping correct technique. How many, how much?
For maximum strength the loading should be high (85-100%) of 1 rep max, (the maximum load that you can lift) and the repetitions few (1-5). The number of sets used will reflect the number of repetitions used (e.g. 6-8 sets of single repetitions is within reach, but to perform eight sets using five repetitions is physically very difficult to do).

      Strength Training Introduction
Many people associate strength training only with athletes. At one time, perhaps, strength training was reserved only for athletes. Certainly the world of muscle building (apart from body building) was relatively unknown. But all that has changed in the last few generations as the health benefits of muscle strength and endurance have become known for men and women of all ages. As a result of technological advances, societal changes, and personal choices, all of us place fewer demands on our muscular systems.
      • Just 2 or 3 generations ago, wood was cut with hand saws.
Stairs were far more common than elevators, and children walked to and from school.
Recreational time was spent engaged in playing ball, climbing trees, running, jumping, and hide-n-seek, instead of parked in front of a video terminal playing video and computer games.

Strength training is an essential element of fitness for virtually every sports man and woman. Long gone are the days when coaches believed resistance exercises only added unnecessary bulk to the athlete, hindering their ability to execute skill. The benefits of strength training to athletic performance are enormous and many. Not only is it an integral conditioning component for power athletes such as football and rugby players, performance in the pure endurance events can be improved with a well-structured strength routine. However, aside from perhaps bodybuilders, sport-specific resistance training requires a more refined approach than simply lifting heavy weights to complete exhaustion. A physiological analysis of any game or event will confirm that most athletes require explosive power, muscular endurance, maximal strength or some combination of all three in order to excel. Rarely is pure muscle bulk the primary concern and when it is, other elements of strength are equally as important.

Strength Training Of Neck Muscles Relieves Chronic Pain
ScienceDaily (Jan. 9, 2008) See also: Participants first answered a questionnaire about their pain and then underwent a clinical exam to confirm a diagnosis of trapezius myalgia (muscle pain in the trapezius muscle, which extends along the back of the neck). Participants were assigned to three intervention groups: those who did supervised specific strength training (SST) exercises for the neck and shoulder muscles, those who did high-intensity general fitness training (GFT) on a bicycle ergometer, and a control group that received health counseling but no physical training. Both exercise groups worked out for 20 minutes three times a week for 10 weeks. The results showed that the GFT group showed a small decrease in neck muscle pain only immediately after exercise, while the SST group showed a marked decrease in pain over a prolonged training period and with a lasting effect after the training ended. "Thus specific strength training locally of the neck and shoulder muscles is the most beneficial treatment in women with chronic neck muscle pain," the authors state. The study also showed that the reduction in pain occurred gradually in the SST group, with trapezius muscle pain gradually decreasing as muscle strength increased. Although the GFT decreased the pain only temporarily, the authors note that even minor decreases in pain may be enough motivation to overcome barriers to exercise, and the resulting increase in fitness may benefit overall long-term health.

    http://www.newellness.com/physfitn/strntrng.htm
Strength Training For Women The importance of strength training for women should not be underestimated. Once a practice reserved solely for competitive athletes and bodybuilders, strength training has gained incredible popularity over the last decade. This is due to the significant research devoted to the study of the benefits of strength training. It is now realized to be an essential part of any fitness regimen, and along with activities that focus on cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and optimal body composition, strength training insures a well-balanced, injury-free lifestyle. (See this article for a program for beginners.) "low calorie diets punish the soul and plummet the metabolism" Strength training has been proven to benefit all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefits from strength training. Traditionally, women relied on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and plummet the metabolism, and, without including consistent strength training in our program, effecting change can be an impossible goal. (Sidebar refers to article with tips on eating correctly for your metabolism.) Also, aerobically overtraining can lead to injury. We now know that strength training is

    Dear Health and Fitness Enthusiast,
Anyway, a couple quick things about me and my Combat Conditioning programs. I'm 45 years young. Twas only yesterday when I was eight years old and first got involved in sports. At age 13 I realized I wasn't looking too good and that's when I decided to do something about it. Since that day I've trained my mind and my body. I set goals to become a champion swimmer, wrestler and martial artist. Although not easy, with good training I managed to become a champion in each endeavor. I won state, national and world titles in wrestling and kung fu before fully dedicating myself to serving others with my extraordinary programs.
I've taken my training to ridiculous extremes - done things that would make a billy goat puke. I've listened to and learned from the best coaches in the entire world - Olympic and World champions. I've traveled the world - from Canada to Australia, from China to New Zealand - from Japan to England, Ireland, Portugal, Abu Dhabi, Mexico, Finland and a host of other countries. And I've been on the cover of several magazines (see below).
Everywhere I go I'm thinking about how I can reach out and help more people, how I change the world with the knowledge that continues to improve my life each day.
