What is Mountain Unicycling?
January 12th 2008 01:10 pm unicycling wikipedia page here if you want to know more.
Why Mountain Unicycling? The question everyone wants answered, why do you unicycle? Well, the reasons I unicycle are many. These include:
  • Its challenging and great exercise (its VERY physically demanding) Requires a very determined personality (which I thrive to have) Exhilarating and exciting when you can successfully ride a brutally steep and rough trail Very affordable since there is no costs over and about the equipment needed (unlike most sports) Refreshing and beautiful especially when in the wilderness Fantastic conversation starter
So, I started a

There’s something inherently cool about riding on one wheel. Perhaps it’s the simplicity of equipment, or the challenge, or the fact that you can ride for years and always find something new to try. Unicycles turn the world into a playground that’s waiting to be ridden, and it’s becoming one of the fastest growing types of cycling. Kris Holm Here you see me riding my 26" Qu-Ax unicycle, multiple times. It is my first unicycle, which I bought on the 22nd of june, 2006. Since the 18th of may 2007 I also have a 36" Qu-Ax unicycle. For some comfortable protection I wear Kris Holm Pulse gloves. Unicycling through the city is great fun. The bridges and traffic provide a nice dynamic challenge. I also ride through the park in my neighbourhood and along the Noord Holland's Kanaal. My unicycles were bought at eenwieler.nl , a Dutch company in Rotterdam. They have good unicycles starting at only €79.90. My girlfriend has a Qu-Ax 26" too, but it was a little tough for her to learn to free mount. She now is the proud owner of a supplemental Qu-Ax 20". The Qu-Ax Standard is a pretty tough unicycle made in Germany. I've really thrown it around, and a regular bicycle would have been a mess by now, but the unicycle doesn't have a dent. There is a great unicycling community. People chat with each other and post images and video clips on

Mountain Unicycling: Great Exercise, Fun Hobby
Mountain unicycling, and other forms of Extreme unicycling are great hobbies and an excellent exercise source. Very few indulgences are both magical and good for you at the same time. A ride on a unicycle is magical because one can never rid oneself of the wonder of being perched on top of one wheel while moving. It is good for you because the ol' uni is a great form of exercise. Obviously, you can never stop pedaling or you'll fall right on your face.
The Experience
What riding unis is all about
You hold the strange contraption between your legs, the seat resting lightly on your crotch. With one foot on the lead pedal, leaning forward, you press down and vault up to the seat, making contact with the other pedal. Then you move forward, keeping the unicycle fork as straight as possible. One pedal after another, you glide down the road, as onlookers gawk in wonder.
There are many types of unicycles. From sturdy

What is Muni? When I went to Mammoth, California in 1987 for a friends wedding I was an avid mountain biker and had already been riding a unicycle for a few years. I had already converted my 24" Pashley unicycle to a 26" when the rim collapsed and I had the largest mountain bike tyre on it that I could get at the time. It seemed normal for me to take my unicycle with me rather than my bike, just more convenient. After seeing the Kamakarsi down hill course, I just had to do it! While the Mountain bikers were doing it in 4.45 minutes, I took 40 minutes. It hurt: my knees and back ached, and I inner thigh was raw from the Pashley saddle. I also got a photo in to MB UK magazine and I was hooked on what was to be called "MUni". All around the world people found mountain unicycling independently, and it got many different names consequently, rough terrain unicycling, mountain unicycling, off-road unicycling, UMX, mountain unibiking and MUni. Duncan Castling designed the first purpose made, mass produced, mountain unicycle for Pashley in 1994 and called it a Muni. Although it is a registered trademark of the Pashley Cycle Company in England, the word "Muni" is becoming the internationally accepted word for... well what ever you want to call it. Here is some information on the pioneers of "Muni":

Unicycling is the most superior form of human-powered transportation!
    You may ask "WHY?"
Because unicycling is superior to all the rest.
"BUT HOW ABOUT BICYCLING?" you may ask...
15 reasons unicycles are better than bicycles:
    1. Unicycles are safer. Far fewer unicycles get in accidents.
  • -They are more visible. -Cars actually stop to let you cross.
  • 2. Unicycles are more maneuverable. 3. They are more transportable. You can take your unicycle on the bus. 4. Unicyclists can get away with a lot more.
  • -Unicyclists can ride in the street or on the sidewalk -You can take your unicycle into the post office with you.
  • 5. They are less trivial to learn how to ride. Challenges are healthy 6. Two wheels are excessive.
ONE WHEEL ONE WORLD! 7. You can ride with no hands without loss of maneuverability.
  • -Having your hands free is very useful; you can juggle, handwhistle, do origami, or eat lunch.
  • 8. They are slower downhill.
  • -Besides going uphill a unicycle is not necessarily slower... -Unicycles are lighter, have a low gear, and I pass bikes on a regular basis.
  • 9. The uncomfortable unicycle seats enhance pelvic stamina.

1 How it started
In my life, I've been on and off on sports. Not so long ago, after several years of inactivity, I felt a bit like escaping my keyboards (computer and organ) at least once in a while, before I fully turn into a fat mollusk. Not really that I'm fat, my friends rather tease me, saying I'm more bones than flesh, but yet, I know I once was thinner and, surely, in better physical shape. I needed some exercise to get away from this damned computer screen, but also knew I would have not been able to give into an activity which is not enjoyable. An example of non-pleasure: working on a stationary cycle in front of a wall :-). Which activity should I choose? I went to the university sport centre continuously after it was built, even for many years after graduation, and enjoyed a lot of different activities there (squash has been my favourite). However, after a few "surprise" strikes from their union, which spoiled many hours of travelling (I was living quite far at the time), and also after some degradation of their level of services, I chose to not renew my membership. I did not feel like restarting the cycle of reservations and travels. I wanted something easier to manage. The idea of unicycling came to me: a good outside activity which calls for many body muscles, without being extreme. The equipment, with a minimum of organisation, is always available; there is no reservation to make, no special place to go, no required synchronisation with team mates. Moreover, I suspected a constant and interesting challenge, some kind of nice and pleasurable game even for the mind. In fact, when I was younger, in college, I was spending hours in equilibrium on two legs of my chair, secured by the wall behind me, in the last row of the class of course. Maybe something was remotely left in me from this old habit?

Unicycles are composed of a few key parts: the wheel (which includes the tire, tube, rim, spokes, hub and axle), the cranks pedals fork -style frame, seatpost , and saddle (the seat of the unicycle). The wheel is usually similar to a bicycle wheel with a special hub designed so the axle is a fixed part of the hub. This means the rotation of the cranks directly controls the rotation of the wheel (called direct drive ). The frame sits on top of the axle bearings, while the cranks attach to the ends of the axle. The seatpost links the frame to the saddle. There are many different types of unicycles, which can include (but are not limited to): freestyle unicycles, trial unicycles, MUnis , giraffes, and long distance unicycles, which all have special components unique to that type of unicycle.

The unicycle's history began with the invention of the bicycle . Comte De Sivrac first developed bicycles during the late 18th century. His device, called a
