The Littlest UnderWater Hockey Player
Recently my husband participated in the National Underwater Hockey tournement. For those of you unfamiliar with the sport, it is played with snorkeling gear and a weighted puck at the bottom of a swimming pool.
Katerina here is modeling the typical gear, including googles, a stick (for pushing the puck along the bottom of the pool towards the goal), ear protection, and rubber glove (to keep skin on your hand as opposed to on the bottom of the pool). Posted by nellison at 1:51 PM

Underwater Hockey The Midwest Diving Council, and its Clubs, host several Underwater Hockey meets at indoor pools, during the winter months, at a variety of locations. Depending upon the hosting Club's geographic location and availabilty of pools.
Underwater Hockey is a fairly recent sport in the United States. It was invented in 1954, and serious play began in the U.S. in the mid-1970's.
This is a breath-hold sport played on the flat bottom of a swimming pool at between 8-12'. Ten players on a team (six in the water at any one time) wear mask, fins and snorkel, using a 14" stick to pass a 3 lb. puck into the opponents' goal at opposite ends of the pool. The play resembles basketball, where players train to improve teamwork, speed, recovery time, strength, puck-handling and pool sense. It is an excellent activity for training skills, snorkeling ability, or to stay in shape.
At different times, seminars are offered for players and officals. They are for seasoned players or beginners

FREEDIVE!
by Terry Maas and David Sipperly Underwater Hockey
If you love the water, enjoy team play and are looking for a way to stay in excellent shape, then underwater hockey is your sport.
Originally played by freedivers to stay in shape during the winter months, underwater hockey has developed into a highly organized and competitive sport over the last 15 years. This lively sport enjoys national and international recognition. To help us explain the basics, we've interviewed Kendall Banks and Tim Burke, two nationally recognized competitors with world championship experience. Tim was the 1996 Underwater Society of America's Underwater Hockey Athlete of the year. Kendall has served as National Underwater Hockey Director for the Underwater Society of America and has represented the United States eight times on the national team in world play; his teammates have elected him captain seven times.
Underwater hockey is loads of fun, but be forewarned: this is one tough sport. It's like running up and down a flight of stairs on a single breath, breathing again at the bottom of the stairs and then repeating this cycle for fifteen minutes. It is a high intensity, anaerobic sport that requires excellent physical fitness. "Although long breath-holds are helpful, they are not critical to success," Tim stresses. "It is more important to couple short, effective breath-hold times-enough to complete each play-with short surface intervals."

The Victorian men's underwater hockey team digs deep during training at Xavier College.
NEARLY two-thirds of my life has been consumed by a sport nobody has ever heard of. A sport that exists on the fringe, outside recreational pursuits that Australians commonly amuse themselves with, yet played by "normal" people. It is a game that has males alongside females scuffling around on the bottom of a swimming pool while wearing snorkels. The sport of underwater hockey is as entertaining as it is bizarre. He introduced us to the basics of the sport: how to breathe through a snorkel, how to kick properly wearing fins, how to duck dive, how to push the lead puck along the bottom using the little wooden bat and how to flick the puck into the steel goal trays that were positioned at both ends of the pool. Over time, a love for the intricacies of this strange game emerged that will remain with me to my (hopefully watery) grave. It is an infatuation that has dragged me all over Australia and to the other side of the globe, introduced me to a horde of engaging people and has allowed me to represent my country. Last year I officially became the worst performed Australian Men's Underwater Hockey team vice-captain when we finished a disappointing fourth in the 2006 world championships held in Sheffield, England. It is something I plan to rectify at the 2008 championships in Durban, South Africa.

Understanding How to Play Underwater Hockey
By Blaise Gassend TEAM MEMBER A dozen people in snorkeling gear frantically swim towards each other from opposite sides of the Zesiger Center swimming pool. Shortly before meeting in the middle, the two fastest swimmers duck underwater and are lost from sight. The remaining swimmers, all face down, breathing through their snorkels, bunch together. They start swimming slowly in the same direction. A few propel themselves into the depths of the pool. Some then start resurfacing. The team swims in an erratic pattern, sometimes slowly, sometimes frantically. Every once in a while, somebody comes up gasping for breath. Most of the time, though, everyone remains underwater, gazing intently at what is going on below. A few minutes later, the swimmers arrive at one wall. They all suddenly look up and start talking animatedly and breathing heavily. Half stay there while the others head to the opposite side of the pool. After a minute or so, the whole process starts over again. That, in a nutshell, is a typical game of underwater hockey. From outside the pool, it looks somewhat bizarre. Underwater, though, an intense game is being played.

heck your skates at the door. Melt the ice. Breathe through a snorkel. Minnesota might be the ice hockey capitol of the nation, but it will be underwater hockey that takes the spotlight this weekend, starting at noon Friday. PHOTO COURTESY MINNESOTA UNDERWATER HOCKEY Underwater hockey involves six players on each side who alternate diving to play a 3-pound puck and surfacing to breathe. The sport comes to the University Aquatic Center this weekend. A total of 21 teams from all over the country will compete in the U.S. Nationals Underwater Hockey Tournament through Sunday at the University Aquatic Center. Players usually spend approximately 15-20 seconds under water before heading to the surface, where they can snorkel for air while watching the play happen below. WHERE TO GO
