Stick pushing puck Stick pulling puck Players wear a diving mask, fins, and a snorkel for play. Safety gear includes a water polo style cap, a mouthguard , and a glove for the playing hand (to protect against pool-bottom abrasion and, in some designs, knuckle protection against puck impact). Because current rules permit a player to switch the stick between hands mid-play, players may choose to wear a protective glove on both hands. The stick is quite short (according to recent rules, not more than 350mm. in length, including the handle) and is colored white or black to indicate the player's team. In tournament play, the color of the stick, swimwear and cap are randomly assigned to each teams before every game. The puck is approximately the size of an ice hockey puck but is made of lead or similar material (Adult size weighs 3 lb kg , Junior 1 3/4 lb 800-850 gm ) and is surrounded by a plastic covering, which is usually matched to the pool bottom to facilitate good grip on the stick face while preventing excessive friction on the pool bottom. The puck's weight brings it to rest on the pool bottom, though can be lofted during passes. The goals are three meters in width and lie at opposite ends of the playing area.

UNDERWATER HOCKEY
RULES EQUIPMENT PLAYING THE GAME PHILOSOPHY ... Download 2008 USOA Hockey Waiver The rules are "non-contact" and players generally cover "zones" around the puck. Success (scoring) ultimately depends on teamwork, since no single person can hold their breath forever. Individual strength is less of an advantage than it is in many other sports. The water nullifies pure mass advantage and emphasizes clever use of torque. In competition, games are two 15 minute halves, and teams can have up to 4 substitutes on the deck who can enter play on the fly. RULES The rules of the game inhibit the use of brute force and allow small people to compete effectively and equally with larger people. Play is solely on the bottom of the pool so your effectiveness is also governed by how much time you spend on the bottom ... the air is, of course, on the top. In the game, exertion usually shortens bottom time to less than 30 seconds. The sport is defined as non-contact in the same way basketball is considered non-contact. The person in control of the puck can not be physically pushed but also may not charge into set opponents. Rules are simple - no body contact unless your stick is on the puck (i.e., no forechecking or moving screens), no touching the puck with anything but your stick, and no detaining or obstructing another player (even if you do have the puck) by pulling off their mask or fins or holding on to them.

This world wide sport was invented in England by a group of free-divers who wanted to stay in shape over the winter season. If you enjoy a great physical workout and other fun pool activities then Underwater Hockey is for you. For more information check out the Underwater Hockey Introduction . What it is.
Imagine this, a pool.with goals at both ends, a plastic coated lead puck on the bottom, two teams of 6 players in the water, with 4 substitutes on the side.
Players wearing mask, snorkel and fins and holding a foot long stick. They hold their breath, submerge and try and get the puck in the goal.
It's different, challenging, low impact, high and low intensity, and definetly a good work out.

LINKS Underwater Hockey Nationals 2008 Day 1 Tasmania has fielded teams in the Open mens, Open womens, Masters, and U18's categories, resulting in over 50 competitors coming away to play for Tasmania at Victoria's Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Albert Park. Competition finishes up on 20th January. Results on Day 1 have not gone Tasmania's way. The Open Men defeated Qld 7-2, but lost to Western Australia 6-1, and Victoria 4-3. The Victorian game was a nail biter, with Victoria breaking a 3-3 deadlock with only 15 seconds to go in the game. The Open Women lost to Victoria 6-1, NSW 6-3, and Western Australia 3-2. They drew encouragement from the final game because they lead WA 2-1 at one point early in the game. The U18 team defeated the Victorian development team 11-0, were thumped by Western Australia 19-0, but improved hugely with only a 4-0 loss to Victoria. The Tasmanian U18 development team drew with the Victorian equivalent, in a match that also went down to the last tile. There is a full two days of competition left before the finals on Saturday morning.
