Most UNH students wouldn't know it, but one of their fellow classmates is going to be doing something a bit off of the beaten path this Sunday. This particular student will be making a trip to Vermont to run not five, not 25, but 50 miles. Yes, you've read correctly, 50 miles in an event known as the "Vermont 50 Ultra-Run." John "Sherpa" Lacroix is a 25-year-old freshman here at UNH. Since 2004, Lacroix has spent a countless amount of time, effort, sweat, blood and tears in becoming something that only one-tenth of ninety-nine percent of the U.S population can claim to be: an Ultra-Marathon Runner. In other words, a runner who has competed in an event that is longer than traditional marathon of 26 miles.

Nevertheless, I've been running more this year than I ever have before with the intention of participating in a 5k (~3.1 miles) at the end of May. I can already run the distance, but I'm not in the race to win it... I just want to cross the finish line without dying and finish ahead of anyone over 70 or under 12. While I can see myself being able to finish a 10k by the end of the summer if I keep at it, that's still only just over six miles. It baffles me how people can run a 26.2 mile marathon. Whitney on July 11-13, 2005 in the Kiehl’s Badwater Ultramarathon, the most demanding and extreme running race offered anywhere on the planet. Scott Jurek, 31, of Seattle, WA took first place honors with a record time of 24 hours, 36 minutes, eight seconds in his first appearance in this event. Jurek is recognized as one of the world’s greatest endurance athletes, in particular for his seven consecutive victories in the Western States 100-mile Endurance Run, a race held on remote mountain trails. The previous record of 25:09:05 was set by Anatoli Kruglikov, 42, of Russia in 2000. Ferg Hawke, 48, from White Rock, BC, Canada placed second with a time of 26:33:00. Hawke was also the runner-up in the 2004 race, which he completed in 27:30:20. In 2005, Hawke led the race on several occasions, before Jurek took the lead and kept it around mile 95. Hawke's 2005 finishing time is the fourth fastest in the history of the event. Charlie Engle, 43, of Greensboro, NC took third with a time of 28:49:47. June 27, 2007 An ultramarathon is defined as any running event longer than the traditional marathon race distance of 42.2K, or 26.2 miles - which, interestingly enough is equivalent to running the length of a football field 461 times. One important element of ultramarathons is the aid station. Aid stations are placed at various mileage intervals along the race course and are designed to provide water, electrolyte aid and food for runners. At some of the longer races, aid stations also consist of doctors and caretakers there to provide medical assistance, foot repair and counseling for runners in distress. Aid stations volunteers can have a huge impact on the runner and especially in later stages of the race. The right food, the right words of encouragement and sometimes just a mere smile can be enough to keep the runner moving. Ultramarathons are typically run in two different types of formats, distance events and timed events. Ultramarathon Distance Events Distance events are the most common ultra races and most familiar for runners new to the sport of endurance running. The idea, as expected, is to run a specified distance in the least amount of time. Typical race distances range from thirty-one miles to 100 miles; but there are also extremes ultra races which are multi-day

Main Unsung ultramarathon performances of 2007 UltraRunning magazine has released its 2007 rankings of North American runners and performances of the year In general, I think the magazine's anonymous panel of judges does a good job with a difficult task, namely, sorting through and ranking results from every conceivable variety of ultramarathon, from pancake-flat road 50Ks to epic multiday trail races. The 2007 rankings seem mostly reasonable to me, with Scott Jurek and Nikki Kimball certainly deserving of their Runner of the Year titles. But how could Uli Steidl's North Face 50 win and Kami Semick's 9th-place World Cup 100K finish not be near the top of the Performance of the Year lists? The San Francisco finale of The North Face's "Endurance Challenge" series was plagued by problems with course marking and monitoring. Nevertheless, Uli knew the course and nobody could stay with him, including Matt Carpenter. Although times on brand-new courses are difficult to assess, I'm confident that nobody mentioned in the UltraRunning rankings could have beaten Uli on that course on that day. And if that isn't a performance of the year, what is? As for Kami: in 2006 she placed 11th at the World Cup 100K in Korea, a showing which was rated as the 2nd-best female performance of the year. In 2007 she improved to 9th, with a faster time, but didn't even receive "honorable mention" status for this achievement. It just doesn't make sense.
