An Interview with Dean Karnazes, Ultramarathon Man [extended]
[I'm reposting this interview so everyone can see the dialog at the bottom - thanks for your questions! - SD]
Dean Karnazes saved my bacon once, and he had no idea at the time. In my first trail marathon ( Golden Gate Trail Marathon ), I started out strong and found myself with the front two guys at mile six. Worried that my newbie pacing would leave me crawling, I asked the runner next to me for advice on taking in calories, which he happily shared. Then he started telling me about how it differs when you run 100, 150, 200+ miles, or say, in the South Pole or across the deserts of Death Valley. Needless to say, I thanked him for his advice, slowed considerably, and faded back from this crazy man.

Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes About this title: Marathon runner Dean Karnazes, who despite his awesome achievements, insists he's just a "regular guy," writes about his life, emphasizing the joys (and woes) of running, which he sees as a challenge, an escape, a physical pleasure, and a way of exploring parts of the world he would otherwise never know. Karnazes began running as a young child (dashing the mile home from kindergarten) and continued through college, then dropped itreturning to the sport after a dramatic incident that occurred on his 30th birthday. In this frank and funny memoir, he writes about his childhood, his college ... read more Note: This is a general synopsis. Each listing is further described below.

Ultra Marathon: Any race where the distance is longer than 26.2 miles is considered an Ultramarathon. Running a full marathon is a major accomplishment and Ultras take that 1 step or many steps further. The Western States is a 100 mile race. Imagine, essentially running close to 4 full marathons in 1 day. RunningPage.com is under new management and the new owner will be completely revamping the website with updated information, with ultra marathon content and all kinds of tools for runners. To start a running we very innovative and we promise you the new version of the Running Page that is being worked on will be cutting edge.
Ultramarathon News: A 13 year old named Mackenzie Riford recently completed the nations oldest Ultramarathon the JFK 50 with her mother. This is an incredible accomplish for any runner. Its amazing that a 13 year has the fitness level to complete a 50 mile race. For any experienced marathoners having doubts about completing a 50 miler you can use this story as inspiration to accomplish a goal of completing a 50 mile ultra marathon. Congrats Mackenzie looks like Dean Karnazes should be worried!

Ultra-Distance Events and Races
Ultra-distance event is traditionally defined as any event which consists of longer than the common standard long distance race for such sport (i.e., over Ironman distance in triathlons, or over marathon distance in running). Ultra events are also not purely based on the distance criteria. There are certain events that also considered ultras due to the terrain, weather, and other conditions that greatly increase difficulty and finishing factor. Multisport stage events and multi-day adventure races would also fall under our definition of an ultra event. One-off individual efforts or once-in-a-while events also deserve a mention here. While the types of ultras may vary from running, cycling, multisport to snoeshoe, skating, sailing, paddling, climbing, and so on, we listed ultra events under six categories below:
multisport (primarily triathlon) ultras
multisport stage ultras
running ultras
cycling ultras ... other sports Triathlon and Multisport Ultra-Distance Races Ultra-distance triathlons are typically races longer than the standard ironman distance (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26 miles 385 yards run). Standard races include double and triple ironman distances, and had been as long as the Double Deca (20 times ironman distance. Ultra-distance triathlons can be held on point-to-point, out and back, or loop courses. Athletes may stop to rest, take feeding breaks, and even sleep if the events are especially long.

Presently he is organizing another cross-canyon run - an ultra-marathon. We have some details on the route since we cover the same trails too but on horseback - four feet being better than two for us! There are two races planned - the first was from Batopilas to Urique and started March 23, 2003. The second event was in reverse - Urique to Batopilas and started on November 21, 2003. The next race is planned for March 6, 2005. This is the 4th footrace across the canyons and mountains. You can register for future runs through Micah's website or write him directly . We can tell you this country is not for the timid so if you are in good shape - buena suerte (good luck)! Micah describes two separate runs below along with an account of how he became involved in running the canyons For another person's first-hand account of the race environment, read Huw Davies' article.

About Ultramarathons
Ultras are runs exceeding 42.195km
An ultramarathon is any run exceeding the standard distance of a marathon, . Competition in ultras differs for other sports as your mind and body can be your ally or opposition. It is the outcome of the struggle within that determines the success of an ultra. An ultramarathoner is, "a person who derives great personal satisfaction from experiences that include, but are not limited to: oxygen deprivation, motion sickness, dehydration, chafing, blistering, vomiting, cramping, toenail loss, heat stroke and hypothermia.... And preferably all at once." or "If you can see the light coming out of the other ear, you're an Ultra runner" Australian ultramarathon running owes much to 62 year-old potato farmer, Cliff Young . Shuffling to victory in the 1983 Westfield Sydney to Melbourne he created interest for a generally unknown sport.

See the registration page for the application/waiver form and rules pages for details. The 2007 event was the coldest, ugliest race yet with only 10 finishers of 46 starters. The trail was bad just north of the checkpoint near Elephant Lake. We thought the groomed part of the trail south of Myrtle Lake would be better, but it was actually worse. The official temp at the airport during the start was -28F and -35F at low spots on the trail Monday night.

#46 - Running Goals
19 January 2008 Start line of the 2007 Healthy Paws Healthy Cause fun run. We all have to start somewhere. On January 1st, 2004 I went running for the first time in years. I made it just over a mile before I had to stop, gasping for breath and wondering if this former high school track and cross country guy could still call himself a runner! I set a few goals for myself and now here I am in 2008 with over a dozen running races and a few thousand miles underfoot since that humbling one-miler four years ago. The new year is a convenient time to and set new goals for the coming year. As early as last October I thought I had my running goals for 2008 all figured out - my plan was simple: However, a deceptively severe hamstring strain I ran the North Country Trail 50M Grand Rapids Marathon In 2007 I ran 30% of my runs with a dog ... countryside and the neighborhood ) during my long runs and that usually leads me out onto the roads.
