MSNBC staff and news service reports PARKER, Colo. - It was supposed to be a celebration at Lutheran High School southeast of Denver, but the homecoming festivities turned into a tragic accident. During a pep rally inside the school's gymnasium Friday afternoon, the senior football players took to the court to play a game of tug-of-war with the junior football players. Witnesses say during the competition, two juniors, who had the rope wrapped around their hands, started to scream. Sophomore Jenni Kjerstad said it was a chaotic scene inside the school. "Hearing it was pretty gross. There was like a lot of people screaming and just all blood flying everywhere and just people running out of the room," she said.

Minimalist's Tug-of-War
Phys. Rev. Lett. Swiss cheese conductivity. According to computer simulations, a composite material optimized for two properties (conducting both heat and electricity) has a surprising structure. The boundary between the two phases is called a minimal surface. Spider silk must be light, elastic, and strongall at once. Drawing inspiration from natural materials that must balance such competing demands, researchers have used computer simulations to calculate the microstructure of a material that simultaneously conducts both heat and electricity. The surprising shape that resulted provides the first simple example of the effects of competing demands on mixtures of two materials, and may offer materials engineers a way to solve a range of similar problems. The results appear in the 23 December print issue of PRL Biological materials are often composites of two or more substances that can simultaneously perform several tasks wellsuch as provide mechanical support, conduct electricity, or transport fluids and particles. To Salvatore Torquato of Princeton University, that fact suggests at least a rough sort of optimization at work. A mixture optimized for a single property, such as heat conduction, looks like blobs of one material suspended in another. But no clear, simple examples exist for the structure resulting from a two-property tug-of-war in a mix of two materials.

"); Jeff Moad , MA Editorial Staff Posted on 2005-05-25 11:02:29.463 Abstract: Manufacturers are struggling with balancing soaring demand for tech resources with tight tech budgets. What should management do? The answer: Spend only on technologies that truly support the business. Advertise with us After enduring several consecutive years of slow- or no-growth IT budgets, IT managers at manufacturing companies could perhaps be forgiven for believing that competition for limited IT resources is about as intense as it could get. But they're wrong. Pressure for a fresh, new wave of IT spending is growing, stimulated by a collection of forces ranging from regulatory compliance to globalization. Not that IT budgets are being increased nearly enough to allow IT managers to meet all of those looming demands. Most manufacturing organizations continue to keep a tight lid on IT spending, a habit many acquired following the Y2K-inspired tech spending splurge of the late 1990s that was followed, painfully, by a manufacturing recession. While observers such as AMR Research Inc. (Boston) say IT budgets in 2005 are increasing by an average of 7.4%, many manufacturers are keeping the pressure on CIOs to suppress any budget increases.

To beat Obama, Clinton strategy emphasizes warmth

  • E-mail Share MANCHESTER, N.H. - After shuffling through all the cards in her political deck, Hillary Rodham Clinton is finally playing the one she finds most personally difficult to reveal - the human card.
Even before yesterday's extraordinary public display of emotion by the typically unflappable Clinton, she had reluctantly, even nervously, accepted a strategy of softening up her image to counter the charm juggernaut that is Barack Obama.
"This campaign is all about likability now," a top Clinton aide told Newsday. "She doesn't like talking about herself, but now she realizes she has to."
In a token of the Clinton campaign's internal struggles, this seemingly straightforward strategy, emphasizing the candidate's compassion and friendliness, was apparently stalled by a months-long tug-of-war at the campaign's highest levels.
Those closest to Clinton say she is one of the most considerate bosses they have ever had. After campaign events, they say, she can often be found scrawling down notes about a person in the audience who came to her with a problem. But how to market that image has been a subject of considerable debate.

Disarmament Claim: Two men each lost an arm in a grisly tug-of-war contest. Status: True. Origins: On 25 October 1997, a mass tug-of-war contest was held at a park along the Keelung River in Taipei in celebration of Retrocession Day (the 52nd anniversary of the end of the Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan). Over 1,600 participants joined in the contest, exerting over 80,000 kg of force on a 5-cm nylon rope that could bear a force of about 26,000 kg at most. document.write('WARNING: The picture below is a gruesome photograph of this incident and will not automatically display. If you want to see the picture, hold the mouse pointer over this text to make it appear.') Within seconds the rope snapped, severing the left arms of two men (Yang Chiung-ming and Chen Ming-kuo) below the shoulder. (The severing of the limbs was believed to have been caused by sheer rebounding force of the broken rope rather than the men's having wrapped the rope around their arms, as was sometimes reported.) The victims were taken to Mackay Memorial Hospital and underwent seven hours of microsurgery to reattach their arms. How Tennis Shoes and Tug-of-War Toppled the Mighty Saturn V
By Alan Lawrie and Robert Pearlman

posted: 7 January 2008 11:52 a.m. ET The year was 1966 and NASA was testing its first fully-assembled, 36-story tall Saturn V moon rocket at its launch facilities in Florida. Despite the threat posed by a hurricane and a ruptured fuel line, the trials with the sky-scraping booster had gone well and it came time to separate the Saturn into its five stages in the voluminous Vertical Assembly Building that had been erected for that very purpose. But NASA engineers had another idea : though the 363-foot (110-meter) tall rocket had been analytically designed to be structurally stable, they saw the opportunity to gather some real world data about how the booster would react to vibrations imparted by wind and other outside forces.

Tug of War
Posted in History by Greg Ross on January 13th, 2008 In 1860, a party of Texas Rangers killed a camp of Comanche Indians near Pease River. Afterward, they noted that one of the women they had captured had blue eyes. She spoke no English, but when Col. Isaac Parker mentioned that his 9-year-old niece Cynthia Ann had been abducted by Comanches 24 years earlier, the woman slapped her chest and said, "Me Cincee Ann!" As it turned out, Cynthia Ann Parker had been kidnapped twice. In 1836, when she was 9, the raiding Comanches had slaughtered her parents and taken her with them. She adopted their ways, grew to womanhood, married a native man, and bore three children. Then in 1860 the raiding Rangers killed her husband and abducted her back into white society. She would be transplanted a third time: Forty years after her death in 1870, her son had her disinterred and buried on an Oklahoma reservation, reuniting her finally with her native family.

Multi-Way Tug-of-War
  • Fun, finale-type activity. Physically exhausting and emotionally climaxing! Works for kids through to corporate programs. Ideal for adolescents and possibly youth at risk. Especially with older adults, be careful with this activity, especially if they are unfit or if overexertion is contraindicated (e.g., heart problems). Use for any size groups, indoor or outdoor. Ideal is large group outdoors. Pick a soft location e.g., grass/beach. In traditional 1 on 1 tug-of-war it is mostly strength that wins, with a few tactics. In multi-way tug-of-war it is mostly tactics that wins, with some strength. Lay out the ropes, etc. as shown in diagram below Participants should prepare appropriately e.g., watches and hand jewellery off. Divide into groups and make sure the groups appear to be of similar strength.
