History of Triathlon - International Triathlon Union (ITU)
A triathlon is an endurance sports event consisting of swimming, cycling and running over various distances. In most modern triathlons, these events are placed back-to-back in immediate sequence and a competitor's official time. Triathlon Triathlon
The regular distance for a triathlon is a one-mile swim, 25 miles bike ride and 10 kilometers run. The distance may be reduced by half or doubled, depending on the event and the participants. The standard triathlon distance can be completed within 2 hours or 4 hours, though this hinges on the participant category and sport terrain. History of Triathlon History of triathlon can be traced to the San Diego Track Club in the early 1970s. The triathlon was seen as an alternative to rigorous track training. The first triathlon event was held on September 25th 1974. Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan are pioneers in the history of the triathlon. The San Diego Track Club sponsored the event. The triathlon then comprised 10km running, 8km bicycling and 500 meters of swimming. In 1989, the sport was awarded Olympic status and featured for the first time at the 2000 summer Olympics held in Sydney, Australia. Since then, the game has grown in popularity. In fact, no other sport achieved Olympic status in so short a timeframe. Over the next decade, triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition throughout the world.

Triathlon Training - Bike
Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly at first. Learning which bike to buy, which accessories you need and learning bike etiquette can be a daunting task. Bicycling can be very serious business for those who have spent thousands of dollars on the latest greatest gear known to 20th century man. If you show up with an old 10 speed, underwear showing under your cycling shorts and a T-shirt, don't worry if you get left behind, you're just starting out. Don't go and spend 3 grand on a new bike only to find out this triathlon training stuff is for other people. Go ahead and use your 10 speed, mountain bike or buy used and upgrade later if necessary. BUT, do make sure your bicycle fits properly and you have a helmet. It will also help you a lot if you equip your bike with clip-less pedals and shoes to maximize your pedal stroke. Last but not least, protect your eyes with sunglasses. How do you tell a happy triathlete? Bugs on their teeth.

IRONMAN TRIATHLON: TAKING IT TO THE LIMIT
Author: Aloha-Hawaii
Who are the physically superior athletes: swimmers, bikers or runners? In 1978, a number of athletes on O‘ahu debated this very question. Finally, a race was proposed to settle the argument: a grueling contest requiring a 2.4-mile roughwater swim, a 112-mile bike race and a 26.2-mile marathon.
Fifteen men participated in the first-ever event, and 12 completed the race. With a finishing time of 11 hours, 46 minutes and 58 seconds, Gordon Haller was christened the world’s first "Ironman."
At the time, race organizers expected that the event would eventually grow to include between 100 and 200 participants. Today, upwards of 50,000 athletes from 50-plus countries (and all 50 U.S. states) compete to simply qualify for the Ironman Triathlon. While 10 volunteers assisted with the 1978 event, today’s triathlon requires more than 5,000 volunteers.
The average Ironman triathlete, we’re told, spends 18 to 24 hours each week training for this event. A typical week might include seven miles of swimming, 225 miles of cycling and 48 miles of running. Many competitors also cross-train with weight training, yoga and other exercises.

    Mind Training for Triathlon
"Whatever the Mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve".
Does your confidence, strength or concentration fade during competition?
Do you train great, but perform badly in competitions?
Do you sometimes feel physically sick when you are about to compete?
Or just looking to improve and move even further forward?
You're in the right place. D ramatic improvement in performance and the ability to overcome virtually any problem in triathlon can all be achieved using mental training.
The reason for this is simply because your mind controls your body - not the other way around, and so most problems in triathlon are simply due to the mind being untrained to perform correctly.

The 3 sports are contested as a continuous event without a rest. The triathlon can be an individual or team event over varying distances. Triathlon history dates back to the early 1970s and originated with the San Diego Track Club. The triathlon was designed to be an alternative to hard track training. The first triathlon event was held on September 25th 1974. Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone are pioneers in the history of the triathlon. The San Diego Track Club sponsored the event. Over the next decade, triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition worldwide. In 1989, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded in Avignon, France, and the first official world championships were held. The official distance for triathlon was set at a 1500 meter swim, a 40km cycle and a 10km run - taken from existing events in each discipline already on the Olympic programme. This standard distance is used for the ITU World Cup series and was also featured at the Sydney Olympic Games.

    Olympic Triathlon Medalists
    History
The triathlon entered the Olympics faster than any other sport. Created in 1974, it became an Olympic sport in 2000. The original triathlon, as represented in the Ironman competitions, is made up of a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile cycling leg, and a full marathon of 26 miles, 385 yards. However, in the Olympics, as in other international triathlons, the distances are much shorter: a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bicycle ride, and 10-kilometer run. Top of page
