About Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan In Korea the indigenous arts of self defense (Soo Bahk Ki and Tae Kyun) were combined with other Chinese Martial Art principles and moral guidelines such as the philosophy of Do (Tao), No Ja (Lao Tzu) and Kong Ja (Confucius) by Founder Grandmaster Hwang Kee, into what is now known as Soo Bahk Do (Tang Soo Do) Moo Duk Kwan . This combination of techniques and philosophy resulted in the development of a form of self defense and mental conditioning unrivaled in the modern world.
For several years Grand Master Hwang Kee studied and researched every available source, and at the age of 22 he was recognized as a Master among other martial artists. In May of 1935 Grand Master Hwang Kee began working for the Korean railroad company which allowed him to travel. In May of 1936 he met a Chinese Kung Fu master named Yang, Kuk Jin. Grand Master trained with Master Yang until 1946, when time China became a communist country. The training consisted of Seh Bop (postures), Bo Bop (steps), Ryun Bop (conditioning) and Hyung (Forms) with their applications.

Soo Bahk Do Tang Soo Do, Volume 1
This is the first volume of five on the classic Korean martial art of Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan. It is the most complete text on the basic unarmed martial artistry in print.
This first volume contains a general history of the martial arts, as well as the history of Soo Bahk Do (the historical form of Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan) in the form of the original instructional scrolls which date from the 17th century.
Anyone, whether he is an active practitioner or interested observer, will find more fundamental factual knowledge of the martial arts here than in any other single source. For example, the reader will find Newton's principles of motion applied to the human body. This is the first time that such scientific theory has been related to martial arts practice.
This first volume is the basic reference text on Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan as taught by Grandmaster Hwang Kee, the founder of the style. All basic movements, striking points, principles and the first nine forms (Hyungs) are described both in words and in pictures.
No martial arts library can be complete without this book and no serious student of martial artistry can ignore the information contained in this book.

Furthermore, the Korean influence can be found in the dynamic kicking techniques and unique use of hip twist in all offensive and defensive movements, in accordance with the teachings of Grand Master Hwang Kee. Tang Soo Do is a traditional martial art with modern day application. It is both a hard and soft style, employing circular and straight techniques. Practice incorporates breathing exercises and meditation for health and well being which complements the Ho Sin Sul practical self defence training.
Early History
Both China and Korea have a long history of civilisation. Like all ancient civilisations, they have periodically engaged in military activity. This has led to the building up of a martial tradition extending to the present day. Along the streams of the Aproh River are tombs dating back over 1500 years and the walls of these tombs show paintings of martial art practice. During the 4th century A.D. (around 540 A.D.), a new king - Chinhung - came to power and called upon a famous Buddhist priest called Won Kwang to develop a system of martial art that was in harmony with the Laws of Nature. He and his monks were accomplished Chinese martial artists, as they had to be for their own safety. There are reliable records telling of the monks teaching lay people their martial art.

San Diego Pacific Karate - Tang Soo Do History
During the 4th century A.D., wandering monks from China introduced Buddhism to Korea. Some of the monks were accomplished martial artists, as indeed they had to be for their own safety. There are reliable records of them teaching lay people martial arts.
The Silla Dynasty (A.D. 668 - 935) was a period when the martial arts expanded rapidly in Korea. The Kingdom of Silla was one of the three Kingdoms in Korea. It occupied the south eastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The Kingdom was notable for the military prowess of its young warrior class, the Hwa Rang. The five basic priciples of Tang Soo Do are derived from the principles of these elite warriors.
At the beginning of the Yi Dynasty (A.D. 1390 - 1907), the National Martial Arts Manual, "Moo Yei Do Bo Tong Ji", was published, and the term "Soo Bahk Do" ("way of hand fighting") became widely used. During the occupation of Korea by Japan (1907 - 1945) the practice of native martial arts was prohibited. This prohibition forced many Korean Soo Bahk Do Masters to emigrate, or to practice secretly.
Following the liberation of Korea in 1945, the Moo Duk Kwan ("Institute of Martial Virtue") and four other Martial Art Schools were formed. The Moo Duk Kwan and Chi Do Kwan later formed the Korean Soo Bahk Do Association in 1960 to develop the study and practice of traditional Korean martial arts.

About Tang Soo Do Meaning of Tang Soo Do
Literally translated, the word Tang means T'ang Dynasty of China, which reflects the shared cultural background between China and Korea ( 617-907 AD ). Soo means hand, but it implies fist, punch, strike, or defence, etc. Do means way of life or art. Thus Tang Soo Do means the Korean classical martial art which legendarily was influenced by the T'ang method of martial art. The Ten Articles of Faith Be loyal to your country.
Be obedient to your parents.
Be loving between husband and wife.
Be cooperative between brothers.
Be faithful between friends. Be respectful to your elders. Be faithful between teacher and student. Know the difference between good and evil. Never retreat in battle. Always finish what you start. Origin The exact origin of Tang Soo Do, as well as of any martial arts in general, is obscure, although there are a number of historical theories. However, the most credible and traditional view is that martial arts originated not in any one country, but in almost all parts of the globe, as they were needed be primitive people.

Short History of Tang Soo Do
A
lthough the Martial Art of TANG SOO DO is relatively modern, it's basis, the Korean art of Soo Bahk Do, dates back many centuries. The art of Soo Bahk Do was a Korean method of self defense as old as Korea itself. During the time of the Hwa Rang Dan, approximately 2000 years ago, the original primitive art of self defense called Soo Bahk, meaning foot fighting was popular among the common people. Through the inspiration of the Hwa Rang Dan warriors, Soo Bahk was combined with the Hwa Rang Dan principles to become Soo Bahk Do, forming the traditional martial art of Korea. During the Silla Dynasty, Soo Bahk Do flourished and developed with each new generation passing on their new techniques. The ancient art of Soo Bahk Do with it's high, powerful kicks and speed, was then fused and developed into a new martial art, Tae Kyun. This combination of the old and new resulted in the development of a form of mental conditioning and self defense unrivaled in the modern world.
In Korea, the people usually use the more common and familiar name for this art, TANG SOO DO. The man who developed TANG SOO DO, Grandmaster Hwang Kee, was himself a martial arts prodigy, having mastered the arts of Soo Bahk Do and Tae Kyun by the age of 22. At that time (circa 1936), Grandmaster Hwang Kee traveled to Northern China where he encountered Chinese martial arts. From 1936 to 1945, Grandmaster Hwang Kee combined Chinese martial arts, Northern Chinese (30%) and Southern Chinese (10%) with Soo Bahk Do (60%) and developed what is now known as TANG SOO DO. Thereby creating a composite style that is both hard and soft. Throughout the Korean War, this art was tested in actual combat across valleys of the Korean peninsula. These experiences gained new respect for the art, not only from the Korean people, but from the allies fighting there as well.
