Tai chi: Improved stress reduction, balance, agility for all
The ancient art of tai chi uses gentle flowing movements to reduce the stress of today's busy lifestyles and improve health. Find out how to get started.
The graceful images of people gliding through dance-like poses as they practice tai chi (TIE-chee) are compelling. Simply watching them is relaxing. Tai chi, in fact, is often described as "meditation in motion" because it promotes serenity through gentle movements — connecting the mind and body. Originally developed in China as a form of self-defense, tai chi is a graceful form of exercise that has existed for some 2,000 years. Practiced regularly, tai chi can help you reduce stress and enjoy other health benefits.
Understanding tai chi
Tai chi movements Tai chi, sometimes called tai chi chuan, is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. To do tai chi, you perform a series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner. Each posture flows into the next without pausing. Anyone, regardless of age or physical ability, can practice tai chi. It doesn't take physical prowess. Rather, tai chi emphasizes technique over strength.

WHAT IS TAI CHI?
The Chinese characters for Tai Chi Chuan can be translated as the 'Supreme Ultimate Force'. The notion of 'supreme ultimate' is often associated with the Chinese concept of yin-yang, the notion that one can see a dynamic duality (male/female, active/passive, dark/light, forceful/yielding, etc.) in all things. 'Force' (or, more literally, 'fist') can be thought of here as the means or way of achieving this ying-yang, or 'supreme-ultimate' discipline. Tai Chi, as it is practiced in the west today, can perhaps best be thought of as a moving form of yoga and meditation combined. There are a number of so- called forms (sometimes also called 'sets') which consist of a sequence of movements. Many of these movements are originally derived from the martial arts (and perhaps even more ancestrally than that, from the natural movements of animals and birds) although the way they are performed in Tai Chi is slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them. For many practicioners the focus in doing them is not, first and foremost, martial, but as a meditative exercise for the body. For others the combat aspects of Tai Chi are of considerable interest. In Chinese philosophy and medicine there exists the concept of 'chi', a vital force that animates the body. One of the avowed aims of Tai Chi is to foster the circulation of this 'chi' within the body, the belief being that by doing so the health and vitality of the person are enhanced. This 'chi' circulates in patterns that are close related to the nervous and vascular system and thus the notion is closely connected with that of the practice of acupuncture and other oriental healing arts.

Tai Chi for Health Purposes
Tai chi (pronounced "tie chee" and also known by some other names and spellings a ) is a mind-body practice that originated in China as a martial art. A person doing tai chi moves his body slowly and gently, while breathing deeply and meditating (tai chi is sometimes called "moving meditation"). Many practitioners believe that tai chi helps the flow throughout the body of a proposed vital energy called qi In traditional Chinese medicine, the vital energy or life force proposed to regulate a person's spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical health and to be influenced by the opposing forces of yin and yang.

With slow movements as fluid as silk, the gentle Chinese practice of Tai Chi seems tailor-made for easing sore joints and muscles. Every day, in community centers, parks, gyms and living rooms across America, people are practicing tai chi. As they move together through a series of slow and synchronized postures, it may look as though they are performing some kind of dance. What they are actually doing is an ancient Chinese practice designed to exercise body, mind and spirit. As they move through tai chi postures, they are gently working muscles, focusing concentration, and, according to Chinese philosophy, improving the flow of "qi,"the vital life energy that sustains health and calms the mind. (Qi is pronounced "chee,"and is often spelled "chi.") In China, where tai chi has been practiced for some 600 years, tai chi isn't just a feel-good workout: it's therapy, a preventive measure and a remedy for almost every ailment, including arthritis. Along with other Chinese imports, such as acupuncture and herbs, tai chi is becoming popular in the West. It appeals to people of all ages because it's not intimidating. Seniors particularly like tai chi because the slow, synchronized movements are easy to learn and to perform.

If You've Got 20 Minutes A Day
I Guarantee A Healthier, More Energized You Why is Tai Chi so popular these days? And why do 180 MILLION people worldwide practice Tai Chi every day? It is because those who do practice every day have a longer, more active life than those who don't, and their health potential increases dramatically. Other exercises dissipate your energy, while Tai Chi accumulates it, leaving you feeling refreshed when you finish. The slow, dance-like speed of Tai Chi creates balance, flexibility and calmness. With an emphasis on deep breathing and using mental imagery, Tai Chi integrates your mind with your body, and is very effective at relieving stress. Recent medical studies confirm what these Tai Chi practitioners have known for centuries - that just 20 minutes a day of Tai Chi can dramatically improve your balance (and significantly cut the risk of falls among older people), improve your leg and lower body strength, increase flexibility, help with arthritis pain, aid in the recovery of injuries, and a recent study presented at the American Heart Association meeting even found that just 12 weeks of Tai Chi resulted in a small but significant drop in blood pressure in older people. Not all Tai Chi programs, though, have as their focus health and healing. In fact most Tai Chi styles come from a martial arts background where the main focus was on effective fighting, with any health benefit just a side benefit.

The practice of Tai Chi promotes the circulation of chi or life energy within the body, encouraging wellness and vitality of the person. Tai Chi benefits both genders and people of all ages.
Early mornings in Beijing and other cities and providences throughout China small and larger groups alike routinely gather wherever there is available open space to practice their Tai Chi or meditation in motion. Observing from the sidelines at first it might appear that they are insync with one another (and most likely on a cosmic scale their energies are merging), but in taking a closer look each exerciser is very much self absorbed into the art of inner meditation and are actually oblivious of the actions of their neighboring meditators. Similar scenes are popping up in the West in our city parks, college campuses, and grassy lawns.

Tai Chi
Tai Chi Chuan is a form of exercise developed by the Chinese, but is more than just exercise, much more; it is an internal cultural art and is the Chinese path to mental, physical and spiritual fitness. Tai Chi Chuan is an art that originated about 500 A.D. and people from all walks of life have practiced it to promote their health and inner tranquility by releasing the natural energy of the body. Tai Chi is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a sport. Traditional Chinese doctors have believed for several millennia that illnesses occur when the internal energy of your body, called Chi, is weak, unbalanced or failing to flow correctly. Tai Chi helps maintain good Chi energy with gentle fluid movements making it a perfect form of exercise for everyone. Many studies, around the world, have been conducted in its benefits and have produced positive results.
