What is Tang Soo Do
Tang Soo Do means "the art of the knife hand" or "the way of the Chinese hand." It contains characteristics of Chinese internal methods and Japanese striking styles. Tang Soo Do is a modern martial art and it's purpose is to develop every aspect of the 'self' in order to produce a mature person who can totally integrate his intellect, emotions, body and spirit.
Tang Soo Do, is not a sport and its primary goal is not a competitive one. However, it does lend itself well to combative situations. Being a well-balanced style, Tang Soo Do offers a wide array of kicks, hand strikes, and stances representative of hard styles as well as softer stances and more fluid motions that are indicative of the softer styles. It derives it's hardness from Soo Bahk Do and its soft flowing movements from the Northern Chinese systems. Its kicking techniques , for which Tang Soo Do is unsurpassed, are based on Soo Bahk Do. Both of which can easily be recognized in the forms that are practiced within the style.
Free sparring is an extremely important part of Tang Soo Do training. There are two major types suitable for Tang Soo Do schools: Dojang sparring and competition; or sport, sparring. Although the techniques used in these types of sparring could be potentially dangerous and could result in a knockout or serious injury if not properly controlled, full contact sparring (kick boxing), traditionally is not included in the Tang Soo Do venue.

Series : Tang Soo Do: Korean Martial Arts Contact: www.wtsda-region21.org/SoFLTSD Summary : Believed to be a Korean style of Japanese Karate, Tang Soo Do is loosely translated as the “way of the empty hand.” It is difficult to pinpoint the exact founder of this martial art, one of the most famed Grandmasters is Hwang Kee. One of his students founded The World Tang Soo Do Association in 1982. This form of martial arts can be traced back to the time between 18 and 57 BC. During these times, there were many wars between the three kingdoms of Korea and a method of martial art known as Soo Bakh was used as a method of self-defense during warfare. This and many other forms of martial arts successfully contributed to the development of Tang Soo Do. In this series of videos, you will learn the basics of Tang Soo Do from a trained instructor. Learn the basic front kick and high block used to defend yourself. Get tips on the more modern in-to-out block or the basic rear elbow strike. Learn how to throw concentrated kicks and challenge yourself with the spinning hook kick. The breaking technique is a basic of Tang Soo Do, and you can see our expert demonstrate this technique appropriately. Learn how to use the basic kicks, blocks, and sparring to defend yourself in the practice of Tang Soo Do martial art.

Birth of the Union

In September of 2005 one hundred members of the International Tang Soo Do Federation and the Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation of Great Britain gathered in Manchester for an afternoon of training, knowledge sharing and friendship. This gathering had come about as the result of an earlier alliance of like minded Tang Soo Do Instructors whose aim was to counteract some of the 'Ryu Pa' that had occurred within the art in Great Britain. Subjects for instruction were chosen for their curriculum neutral status. Those subjects included quarter staff, sweeps and knife defense.
On Sunday the 4th of February 2007 Chief Instructors and Masters from six Tang Soo Do federations met at the 'ORO' in 'Henley in Arden' to discuss expanding The Tang Soo Do Union.
The unique nature of that meeting is a pivotal point in the growth of The Tang Soo Do Union. For fifteen senior Tang Soo Do Instructors (one of whom was the first British citizen to obtain Dan certification in Tang Soo Do) to meet with no agenda beyond the creation of a contact group that could open training/competing opportunities for members is we believe, unprecedented in the UK.
I would like to thank;

About the Club
As a Straight Blast Gym Affiliated Training Group, we seek to give a balanced self-defense skill set to our members by embracing " aliveness " (defined as movement, timing and appropriate progressive resistance) as a training philosophy. Our curriculum includes training in striking, clinch, and ground work. The club is charged with bringing high quality martial arts instruction to Dartmouth Students, Grad Students, Faculty and family members as well as to members of the local community. Classes are open to anyone 13 years of age or older. All experience and ability levels are welcome. PE credit is available to any Dartmouth student who meets the minimum time requirement set by the athletic department (approximately 16 hours). There is no attendance requirement for those not opting for PE credit, though we recommend that all students try to attend at least two classes per week in order to make significant progress.
