W e l c o m e Welcome to the website of the Yale Tae Kwon Do Club! We are a group of students of Tae Kwon Do, the Korean national sport and the most popular martial art in the world today. It is both a sport and an art, a pastime and a way of life. Our club was founded many years ago, originally under the instruction of Grandmaster Ho Soo Hwang, and is now instructed by his son, Master Robert Hwang. We regularly compete in the Intercollegiate Tae Kwon Do League, focusing primarily on sparring and forms, but offer instruction for all manner of students, including those who do not wish to compete (although if you do want to, it is encouraged!).
This website contains information pertaning to both the club and the art of Tae Kwon Do in general. Please feel free to peruse our site and send any comments and/or suggestions to either the webmaster of any of the other officers! A n n o u n c e m e n t s 9.28.06 - New Year Major Updates

    I: Introduction
Any student of Tae Kwon Do deserves to learn about the significance of the art. To miss out on learning such a matter is a grave injustice. Tae Kwon Do's history deserves to be cherished and dignified, especially among its practitioners. The essence of Tae Kwon Do's history seeps into our minds every time we tie our belts or practice our forms. How well do you know your art?
II: The Birth of Tae Kwon Do
Man has been endowed with the natural impulse to survive dangerous situations, using whatever tools are available. If caught in such a situation, man could possibly wield a weapon to defend himself, but weapons are not always available. Therefore, man needs to learn how to use his own body as a weapon. Thus opens the history books on the martial arts.
Tae Kwon Do has endured a dramatic history, beginning with the three rival dynasties in early Korea: Koguryo, Silla, and Baekjae. Koguryo Tae Kwon Do began in present day Korea, during the Koguryo Dynasty (37 BC - 668 AD). The earliest evidence of Tae Kwon Do is found in warriors' tombs dating as far back to the year 3 AD. Murals painted on the walls of the tombs depict men engaged in Subakki fighting. This combat was different from the type of Tae Kwon Do that is practiced today, however. Tae Kwon Do has evolved over the years, becoming more scientifically systemized through each generation.

Origins: Korean martial arts in general can be traced back to the Koguryo dynasty (37 BC - 668 AD), but the arts practiced at this time bore little to no resemblance to modern TKD. Modern TKD was formed during the 40s from Okinawan, Japanese and Chinese styles. After the Japanese occupation of Korea, there was nationalist fervor, and in 1955 the name of Tae Kwon Do was given to "Korean Karate" and a process was begun to utilize Korean arts to create a unique nationalist martial art. Modern TKD: During the 60s, TKD was governed by two major bodies, the ITF and the WTF. During this time, the art was standardized and the old Japanese based katas were replaced by newly created poomse, and the martial art moved more towards a sport, much in the way contemporary wushu was created as the national sport of China during this same time period. Tae Kwon Do is now of course, an official Olympic sport. Characteristics: TKD is famous for its kicks. Most kicks are thrown from the back leg. In Olympic style TKD, punches to the head are not allowed.
