From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Russian synchronized swimming team, May 2007 Synchronized swimming is a hybrid of swimming gymnastics , and dance . This sport has an artistic effect, and really relates to those three sports. It consists of swimmers (either individuals, duets, trios, teams or combos) performing a synchronized routine of elaborate and dramatic moves in the water, accompanied by music. Synchronized swimming demands first-rate water skills, and requires strength, endurance, flexibility, grace, artistry and precise timing, not to mention exceptional breath control while upside down underwater. Developed in the early 1900s in Canada, it is a sport performed almost exclusively by women, although there is some participation by men. In its early form it was sometimes known as "water ballet". It is a Summer Olympic Games sport. First demonstrated in 1952, it has been an official event since 1984. Olympic and World Championship competition is not currently open to men, but other international and national competitions allow male competitors. Both USA Synchro and Synchro Canada allow men to compete with women.

Last summer the fountain was working, and we planned to hold our Circle Line Tours mission there. Of course the day of the event the fountain was empty, presumably broken, and we had to change venues at the last minute to the smaller, and in this case ultimately funnier, Union Square fountain. On Saturday, July 24, 2004 Improv Everywhere finally got what we have wanted for so long.

At Google, software performance is extremely important. Every millisecond counts, which is why we spend a lot of time using performance tools and other techniques to help make our software faster. I was recently Sharking a piece of multithreaded code and realized we were getting bitten by the use of an @synchronized block around a shared resource we were using:
static NSDictionary *foo = nil;

Shark told us without a doubt that we were paying heavily for the @synchronized block each of the millions of times we were calling fooFerBar . We couldn't create the resource in +initialize , because fooFerBar was part of a category, and overriding

Brief and Straightforward Guide What is synchronized swimming?

What is Synchronized Swimming?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Synchronized swimming, also known as pattern swimming or water ballet , is an Olympic sport that mixes swimming with ballet and gymnastics, and includes diving, stunts, lifts, and endurance movements. Synchronized swimming started as an organized sport at the beginning of the 20th century, when Margaret Sellers, a Canadian water polo player, developed the art of 'ornamental swimming'. The term synchronized swimming was coined later on by former gymnast Katherine Curtis to refer to her group of swimmers, later renamed The Modern Mermaids. In the 1940s and '50s, Esther Williams became a Hollywood sensation by performing synchronized swimming routines in a series of films. Women's synchronized swimming didn't become an Olympic sport until 1984, when both duets and teams of four to eight swimmers were allowed to compete. The sport is now ruled by the Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur or FINA. The US team holds world records for receiving a perfect score of ten 10s and for winning the most medals. Synchronized swimming has been the most successful American Olympic sport since its inception, as the US team has won gold or silver medals in each event. Requirements of synchronized swimming include wearing a noseclip and a hair bun, which is kept in place with unflavored Knox

19. Carleton College Synchronized Swimming Club
Located in Northfield, Minnesota. Includes history and news about the club.
http://www.carleton.edu/curricular/PEAR/club/synchro.html
Synchronized swimming at Carleton is meant to expose the campus to this emerging NCAA sport, allowing students to learn something new and get exercise in a fun and relaxed environment. Carleton's team, the Dolphins, comes from a wide range of backgrounds, some team members having done synchro since elementary school while some are just perfecting their ability to swim. The sport consists mainly of women competitors, but Carleton men do join the Dolphins to perform in their show each year. The Dolphins' two main priorities are competition and an annual show for the Carleton community. While swimmers of all abilities compete, competition is an option for team members able to make a more serious time commitment. Meets are usually held at other schools in the Midwest, and the Dolphins travel as far as Ohio to compete in the regional competitions. The annual show is usually extremely well attended, and offers an entertainment opportunity for the campus as well as affording respect and admiration to this little known sport. The team performs its competition routines as well as several show routines, including a co-ed number and a floating routine, both campus favorites. Synchronized swimming collegiate season falls during Carleton's winter term, but the Dolphins start preliminary practices in the fall, teaching basic skills to new swimmers. In the winter the practice schedule varies depending on whether or not a swimmer wants to compete, and on how many show routines she participates in. The Dolphins have pool time six days a week. The team practices in Cowling Recreation Center, and practices consist of swimming workouts, drills of synchro skills, and routine rehearsals.
