Lifesavers at Wanda Beach, Cronulla, 1964 or 1965. Photographer Jeff Carter. Image courtesy of the National Library of Australia No examination of the Australian identity would be complete without looking at the surf. Over the last two centuries the Australian bush has been central to the way Australians have viewed themselves. Yet it is images of rolling waves, white beaches Surfing and the beach do not discriminate. They bring together a diverse range of people. Unlike other places around the world that have privately owned beaches, in Australia the beach is a public place. John Pilger, in his book A Secret Country , says, 'there are no proprietorial rights on an Australian beach' and there is 'a shared assumption of tolerance for each other.'

    http://www.pihaslsc.com/
    Welcome to Piha SLSC:
Piha Surf Life Saving Club enjoys possibly the highest profile in the country – not only due to the top rating television programme but also as the busiest patrol in the country – performing almost twice as many rescues as the next club. We have a proud history as a patrolling club and it is a set requirement that every member perform patrol duties before they can compete in interclub Surf Sports. Our next generation of beach guardians is being trained in our club Nippers programme. From a nonexistent programme a matter of seasons ago, the season just gone we registered 165 Junior Surf members. We envisage this season junior membership will be in excess of 200. with this rapid growth comes a demand for the club to keep pace and deliver quality programmes and resources. Unlike other clubs, Piha has junior members becoming involved from age 5 and we have a programme that develops them from that young entry age through to 14 years when they move on to qualify as lifeguards. This unbroken chain of development is a unique feature of Surf Life Saving. Elsewhere, under the expert tuition provided by a paid Head Coach, Piha has been the quiet achiever in Surf Sports competition with a growing programme and ever improving athletes. The focus for the immediate future is to now take these competitors the next step and see Piha stamp a real authority on carnival results.
