by Brett Forrest In the 1990s so-called alternative sports made inroads into the imagination and recreation time of people around the worldbut especially in the United States. Figures from the National Sporting Goods Association showed a decline in participation by Americans in traditional sports, including football and baseball, in favour of such new sports as in-line skating and snowboarding . Even "extreme" sports, the playground of adrenaline junkies, high-speed addicts, and alterna-athletes, were becoming more mainstream in 1997 than ever before. Thanks in large part to the annual winter and summer ESPN X Games, which drew 219,900 spectators, such relatively new sports as wakeboarding, aggressive in-line skating, and street luge continued to experience a meteoric rise in participation and exposure that served to further legitimize them. By comparison with these domains of dyed hair, tattoos, and body piercings, sports such as mountain biking and beach volleyball seemed rather establishmentarian; indeed, both had become official Olympic events in 1996. In general, alternative sports could be divided into three groups: those that had already moved from the fringe into the mainstream, those that were fast approaching mainstream status, and those still very much on the fringe.

      Street Luge
      Street luge is a form of recreation as well as an extremely popular adventure sport in which the participants roll down the sloping roads of the mountains riding a street luge board . Mainly the street luge races use the paved roads for the downhill street luge rides at a speed of more than 70 miles per hour. These boards are usually made of the combination of a number of materials like aluminum, carbon fibre, steel and wood. However, with no strict rule binding the shape of the board, they can be of varied designs and patterns. Though the boards are expected to have both the front and the rear padding, yet the use of the mechanical brakes in the street luge boards are prohibited. The racers are always advised to protect themselves with a helmet having chin strap and face shield . The use of goggles to protect the eyes is also common. Two to six racers can compete at a time in the races held along courses whose lengths range from 0.5 to 3 miles. The sport of Street luge originated in Southern California when the skateboarders , while rolling downhill, found that lying down on their skateboards facilitated their movement. This was known as classic style or butt boarding. The first professional competition of Street luge dates back to 1975 when the U.S. Skateboard Association hosted the race at

Contact Us street luge or land luge History has it that Street Luge evolved from Skateboarding; lugers from all over the United states and Europe claim to have started the sport, yet no one is really certain where it developed, and when, the evolution between skate and luge occurred. Street luge began when skateboarders decided to lay down on their boards at the top of a steep hill and raced each other downhill. Some people claim that Bob Pereyra of the USA, one of the pioneers of street luge, ran out of petrol in a mountain area. The legend goes that he pulled out a skateboard from the trunk of his car and rode it down the mountain road.
    we don't know if that story is true or not but Pereyra holds a special place in the history of street luge. He was the 1st person to set down the rules of the sport and organized the 1st official street-land luge competition.
    The 1st street lugers built their own sleds. As the sport continued to develop, manufacturers began to produce luges that were technologically quite advanced. Today, every professional rider’s sled is custom built to fit their body shape and size.

    DIY street legal luge + awesome helmet = RAD Back in the late seventies, I was a skateboarder. I would find the biggest hill I could and bomb down that thing as fast as I could. I didn't do tricks or flips. I was a gravity junky. 10 years and some common sense later, I wasn't skateboarding anymore but I saw this street luge on TV andthought it was awsome. The main drawback is that it was missing something that I cherished after a few scary accidents, mainly brakes. I put the idea aside for a possible future maybe project... ...until 3 years ago. I don't remember if it came to me while on the can or in the shower but I was thinking to myself that if I built a street luge, not only should it have brakes, but it should be street legal to avoid any hassles from the law. Street luges are considered as skateboards here and a skateboard is illegal on public roads. But not bikes,hmmmmmmmm. Link

    Streetluging has become a popular alternative sport after years as a renegade non-sport thrill. As long as there have been skateboards, daredevil speed seekers would lie down on their rides and bomb the steeps. From those ground breaking high speed Signal Hill runs of the 1970s to the dozens of professional Gravity Sport races held worldwide today, streetluging has a place in sports history and is here to stay. Street luging is often featured in movies and TV, streetluge pilots are treated like celebtrities and there are even toys featuring street luge vehicles and actual pilots in miniature. As a result, more people want to experience the thrill of the streetluge for themselves or perhaps even build their own "sled".
    The streetluge is a long vehicle (up to 8.5 feet long!) meant to be operated in a laid back position. Riding on craft built up on skateboard style wheels and trucks, pilots clad in motorcycle helmets and full leather suits are rarely more than two inches from the asphalt. The low profile streetluge design allows for speeds as high as 80 mph, however, this sport is still exhilarating and fun at 25 mph! Many street luge pilots build their own craft but there are some manufacturers out there selling race quality street luges.
