The game is played by two players (or four players for doubles) with 'standard' rackets in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. Squash is characterized as a "high-impact" exercise that can place strain on the joints, notably the knees.

Diet Recipes Dinner Party Menus Food History ... Newspaper Columns The Definition of Squash: The fruits of various members of the gourd family, which fall into two classifications, summer squash and winter squash. The term " summer " and " winter " for squash are only based on current usage, not on actuality. "Summer" types are on the market all winter; and "winter" types are on the markets in the late summer and fall, as well as winter. Thus, the terms "summer" and "winter" are deceptive and confusing. This terminology was never meant to confuse— it just dates back to a time when the seasons were more crucial to man's survival than they are now. "Good keepers" became known as winter vegetables if they would "keep" until December. Winter squash comes in shapes round and elongated, scalloped and pear-shaped with flesh that ranges from golden-yellow to brilliant orange. Most winter squashes are vine-type plants whose fruits are harvested when fully mature. They take longer to mature than summer squash (3 months or more) and are best harvested once the cool weather of fall sets in. They can be stored for months in a cool basement-hence the name "winter" squash. Stay away from pumpkin pumpkins, whether they're the classic field type or the original French variety. Carve them, but don't eat them: they're tough and bland. Winter squash have hard, thick skins. Store in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place for up to one month. Winter squash can be cut in halves or pieces. Too cook them, first remove fibers and seeds; then bake, steam, or boil the squash. When water is used in cooking, the quantity of water should be kept small to avoid losing flavor and nutrients. Acorn and butternut squash are frequently cut in half, baked, and served in the shell. Squash pulp is also used for pies and may be prepared in casseroles, souffles, pancakes, and custards.

Again, it comes back to getting some degree of critical mass of content so that contributors are encourage to contribute. Nobody is going to bother contributing to an empty site - Paul may well have to spend a bunch of time generating content for himself as well as maybe using some offshore services to get it ticking over. Club vs Men's Team Tradition Continues The tradition of a club team playing the men's team prior to an East Coast trip continued this past Thursday January 10th. This tradition dates back to the early days of the Stanford Squash program and is a key component of preparing the men's team for their East Coast collegiate matches. In recent years, the match has become extremely close and competitive and this year was no exception with the club team winning on a 6-4 decision. The team looks forward to another competition prior to the collegiate nationals in February. #1 John Brody def. Sam Gould 3-1 Winner: Club

But what was not expected was the performance put in by American Julian Illingworth. True, Illingworth has become the highest ranked American male ever, at No. 52 on the PSA rankings, but with the likes of Canadian Shahier Razik seeded No. 1, there was no chance Illingworth would play for the Gold medal. Ahh, but that's why they play the game. Never say never, and Illingworth conquered Razik in the quarterfinals before going on to beat Colombia's Miguel Angel Rodriguez for the first time in his career in the semifinals. Despite having nothing left for the final, Illingworth served notice to the squash world that his four years at Yale were not going to stop him from turning heads at the professional level. And why should anyone doubt that, Illingworth did win his first round match at last year's Tournament of Champions when he shocked Australian Dan Jenson in five games after dropping the first two.

... Recipes Summer squash (also known as vegetable or Italian marrow), is a tender, warm-season vegetable that can be grown throughout the United States anytime during the warm, frost-free season. Summer squash differs from fall and winter squash in that it is selected to be harvested before the rind hardens and the fruit matures. It grows on bush-type plants that do not spread like the plants of fall and winter squash and pumpkin. A few healthy and well-maintained plants produce abundant yields.
Summer squash appears in many different fruit shapes and colors: Scallop or Patty Pan is round and flattened like a plate with scalloped edges, usually white but sometimes yellow or green. Constricted neck is thinner at the stem end than the blossom end, classified as either "crookneck" or "straightneck" depending on if the stem end is straight or bent, and is usually yellow. Cylindrical to club-shaped Italian marrows , such as zucchini, cocozelle and caserta, are usually shades of green, but may be yellow or nearly white.

Winter squash arrive late in the growing season and they have a long shelf life, so they've long been a staple in winter and spring, when other vegetables are harder to come by. Unlike summer squash, winter squash must be cooked. They're usually baked or steamed, and then sometimes puréed. Select squash that are heavy for their size. Varieties: acorn squash Notes: These are popular because of their small sizeone squash can be cut in half and baked to make two generous servings. The biggest drawback to this variety is that the rind is quite hard, and therefore difficult to cut. Select acorn squash with as much green on the rind as possible. Substitutes: buttercup squash (drier) OR butternut squash (nuttier flavor; easier to peel when raw) OR banana squash (much larger) OR turban squash (sweeter) OR Hubbard squash (much larger) OR pumpkin (much larger) OR green papayas OR golden nuggest squash (hard to cut open; consider baking first) baby acorn squash Substitutes: summer squash banana squash Notes: This variety is so large that grocers usually cut into smaller chunks before putting it out. It's tasty, but its biggest virtue is the beautiful golden color of its flesh.

The Cucurbitaceae family is made up of warm season annuals that prefer hot, humid weather. Most plants in this family have spreading growth habits that produce tendrils at the leaf axils, monoecious with separate male and female flowers.. The fruit of the Cucurbitaceae family is a pepo. Fruit referred to as a "pepo" means that the ovary wall is fused with receptacle tissue, thus forming a hard rind and hard dormant seed. Wild gourds were used in prehistoric times as containers for storing and holding food items and water as well as musical instruments. Some of the more popular vegetable crops in this family are cucumbers, watermelon, muskmelon, squash, and pumpkin.
