I love auto racing, so imagine the thrill I got when I saw the trailer for the #21w World of Outlaws Sprint Car, driven by Danny Wood parked at the local Days Inn. Of course, much like the father who buys the electric train for his son for Christmas and then spends the next 5 days playing with it, I had to stop by and take a look. I told my wife it was because I thought Jonathan would like to see a real race car up close, but I never believed it for a second. I wanted to see the car, and if Jonathan was interested, so much the better. And better it was. From the minute Jonathan saw the car he fell in love with it. He went up, touched the tires, looked inside, and reached as high as he could get to touch the wing perched on top. Soon a middle aged man in a "Pepsi" (the car's sponsor) tee shirt came over and introduced himself. As you might guess, it was Danny Wood, the driver. The car was on its way from the Knoxville Nationals in Iowa to the next race in Billings, Montana, and had stopped for the night. It is unbelievable how friendly and open race people are, especially to kids, and soon we were taking pictures right and left of Jonathan sitting behind the wheel pretending to drive. Some of the pit crew even pushed the car a few feet so that Jonathan could push the brake pedal.

Races for Sprint cars, known as the Big Cars until the 1950s, ran mostly on quarter- to half-mile dirt tracks. In the early days, races were usually held in conjunction with state fairs and ran on horse-racing tracks. After WWI, many half-mile tracks were built across the nation, primarily for auto racing. During the 1920s and '30s, racecar drivers were a close-knit group of daredevils. They raced for the thrill, the noise and the money. Many lives were lost, but most of those fallen men were dedicated in their love of racing - they wouldn't have wanted to go any other way.
