The soapbox derby began over 50 years ago in the USA with youngsters racing downhill in makeshift carts made from crates and soapboxes. This soon evolved into regular organized events. The whole family often gets involved in the fun of building the car, weekend racing or competing in national or even international championships. Competitors are usually girls and boys aged between 8 and 18. Power is solely gravity-produced and there are strict rules and specifications regarding car building. Starting with a molded kit, Masters racers add fiberglass to stiffen and streamline their vehicles. June 2003 Page: 1 Ryan Harrigan, at age 15, is a champion racecar driver. In his first race, at age nine, he placed in the top half of the field. He finished third in his second race. Today, the basement of his family's house holds more than 100 trophies from his racing career. That number may well double in a few years: Ryan's brother Sean began racing last year at the age of seven, and his goal is to win more trophies than his big brother. Source: Mike Harrigan Ryan Harrigan's car in the University of Maryland wind tunnel. A total of 22 tests were run on five different cars at wind speeds of 48 kph/30 mph. Too young to hold a driver's license, the Harrigans race "Soap Box Derby" cars powered by gravity. Derby racing got its start in 1933, when newspaper photographer Myron "Scottie" Scott came across three boys racing homemade, engine-less cars down an inclined street in Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A. Scott's newspaper, the Dayton Daily News, sponsored a formal competition later that year, where 362 competitors and 40,000 spectators showed up. By 1935, the race attracted corporate sponsors and competitors from around the country, and had moved to Akron, Ohio.

    Introduction
The soap box derby car is a small, handmade car with no motor that is run solely on the power of gravity. It can be built using simple materials, and the popularity of the soap box derby has made even high-tech materials like fiberglass a common component. Anyone can build a soap box derby car with simple blueprints or with the help of a kit.
