About Us The premier youth and family oriented racing program in the United States comes to Cookeville , TN. as the Soap Box Derby races into town on June 16, 2007. Over 82 youth are expected to compete in their gravity-powered racers for a chance to represent Cookeville at the 68th All-American Soap Box Derby Championship at Derby Downs in Akron on July 21, 2007. Established in 1934, the All-American Soap Box Derby is an American tradition riding a new wave of energy with the support of title sponsor Home Depot and NASCAR. The Cookeville , TN. race is one of 150 local races held across the U.S. and overseas this year where participants compete in one of three divisions: Stock, Super Stock and Masters. Drivers in the Stock Division range from 8 to 13 yrs old. Drivers in the Super Stock and Masters division range from 10 to 17 yrs old. While Stock is mainly for beginners who build simplified cars from kits, Super Stock racers build larger model cars made from larger kits and shells. Masters competitors build a more sophisticated designed-style car from scratch or a kit and are between the ages of 10 and 17. In competition, a Derby car can reach speeds upwards of 30 miles per hour depending on the angle of the ramp or hill. Boys and girls can enter a local Soap Box Derby race by building a car from a kit purchased from the All-American Soap Box Derby and passing a pre-race safety and construction inspection. Participants are required to compete in the Soap Box Derby race geographically closest to where they reside. All race winners in each division automatically earn the right to compete in the All-American Finals.

Sifry's Alerts David Sifry's musings Main October 28, 2007 2007 Bernal Heights Soap Box Derby Today was the last Sunday in October, and that meant that it was time for the annual Illegal Soap Box Derby on Bernal Heights Hill in San Francisco. I brought the family, and it was fantastic. There was a very relaxed atmosphere, and yet many people had brought some pretty sophisticated soap box racers. I bumped into Scott Beale as we were leaving, and he gave me more background of the Derby - appraently, there's no permit, no cops, and thus no safety patrol - and I gotta tell you, that just added to the charm of the event - truly a real San Francisco event that just felt really natural and friendly. It was my first trip all the way to the top of Bernal Heights hill, and even though it doesn't look like much on Google Earth, it really gave a spectacular view of downtown San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, and locations to the four points on the compass - all the way to Twin Peaks to the east, Daly City to the south, the Bay Bridge and Oakland piers to the east, and of course, the downtown financial district to the north. Quite beautiful. Many thanks to Telstar Logistics for getting this organized.

If you were in Akron Ohio on July 21, you should have been at the Derby Downs for the 70th All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship. Fortunately for FIMP, C. Hayes was there with her camera, documenting the occasion for all of us who missed it. The official track is 989 feet, four inches long. The record time set by one of these gravity-powered racers on the current track length is 28.24 seconds, by Hilary Pearson of Kansas City in 2004. All the cars are built from kits by the kids. Many of them have sponsors supporting them, and you know that I'll be eating at the Underpass Grill the next time I'm in Ogallala, NE. The gentleman in purple is the oldest living derby racer! The race event is surrounded by a week full of activities, including a parade, a rally, and celebrity appearances. The 2007 date is July 21. Derby History: The Soap Box Derby was started in 1934 in Dayton, Ohio by a group of friends who constructed racing cars from scraps of lumber. The fledging race moved to Akron in 1935, attracted by the hilly terrain and the WPA project, Derby Downs. The race attracted the attention of Chevrolet, who sponsored the race from 1935 until 1972 and started the tradition of offering scholarships as prizes.
