The week passed, and nineteen boys arrived at the site in suburban Dayton to contest for honors. One of the cars-which did not win the cup-personified Scottie's vision of a "Soap Box Derby" racer. Obviously handcrafted, painted black with a big white "7" on it, the racer had been built by Robert Gravett, son of a Dayton metal stamping plant employee. "Scottie" got his pictures-and "Old No. 7." as he christened it, would become the symbol of the Derby for the for the next thirty-five years. The race in Dayton was a huge success, with champions from thirty-four cities, each sponsored by a newspaper. A handicap system was introduced by Scott and his committee. Based on times in previous heats, a car thought to be vastly superior from Omaha, Nebraska was required to start down the 3/8 mile course 5.7 seconds behind one with baby carriage wheels built by Robert Turner of Muncie, Indiana. Another car with better times from Chattanooga, Tennessee started rolling 4.6 seconds after Turner. Neither was able to catch the chubby eleven-year-old lad from Indiana, who won the $500 first prize by 1.4 seconds.

The first All-American race was held in Dayton on August 19, , after an idea by Myron Scott , a photographer for the Dayton Daily News. The following year, the race was moved to Akron because of its central location and hilly terrain. In , Akron civic leaders recognized the need for a permanent track site for the youth racing classic and, through the efforts of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Derby Downs became a reality.

The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has been run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are held each August at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.
There are three racing divisions which compete at the national All-American competition. The Stock division is designed to give the first time builder a learning experience. Boys and girls, ages 8 through 17, compete in simplified cars built from kits purchased from the All-American.
The Super Stock division gives the competitor an opportunity to expand their knowledge and build a more advanced model. Both of these beginner levels make use of kits and shells available from the All American.
The Masters division offers boys and girls, ages 10 through 17, an advanced class of racer in which to try their creativity and design skills. Master entrants can build a laydown or lean forward style car from scratch, or they may purchase a Masters Kit and Senior Speedster fiberglass body shell from the All-American as options.

The Kansas City Soap Box Derby has been holding races since 1947. Soap Box Derby is a racing program for boys and girls ages 7-20. With the help of a parent or another adult, kids build their own gravity-powered race car which they drive themselves. Soap Box Derby builds close parent/child relationships and teaches building skills, perseverance and good sportsmanship.
TRACK LOCATION
The Kansas City Soap Box Derby Track is located at 4600 Eastern Ave., Kansas City, MO, just southwest of the Sports Complex. See map. It is one of the fastest tracks in the country. Cars generally reach speeds of up to 30 mph at the finish line.
WHAT HAPPENS AT A SOAP BOX DERBY RACE?
On race day, competitors will only race against cars in their own division. The drivers will draw numbers to determine who their first opponent will be. A race (heat) against an opponent consists of two runs (phases) down the hill. In the first phase, a timer at the finish line will measure the time difference in thousandths of a second as the two cars cross the finish line. Then the cars and drivers will be brought back to the top of the hill where they will switch lanes and wheels with their opponent and race again. The times will be totaled to determine the winner of the heat. The races are double elimination events, so drivers must lose two heats to be out of the race.
RACE DAY INFORMATION
  • Registration is $30 per day/$20 per day per sibling.
