The beauty of snowshoeing is that it's easy to learn. A trip on snowshoes may be as easy as a casual walk around the yard or as difficult as a winter mountain hike. No special skills and only warm winter clothing is required. One of the finest aspects of snowshoeing is its simplicity. The great thing about snowshoeing is you can snowshoe the same trails you hike in the summer. The banks of streams and rivers are always interesting with their open views and potential for seeing wildlife. Start with shorter hikes and work your way up to longer hikes to the peaks. Be sure to check our snow report for trails particularly suited to snowshoeing. Low cost makes snowshoeing popular winter sport
By Karen Price
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, December 21, 2007
If the word "snowshoeing" conjures up the image of someone in a parka plodding across a snow-covered field with old, wooden tennis rackets strapped to both feet, you're not alone. But modern snowshoes bear little resemblance to the bulky, awkward contraptions most people think of. They're smaller, lightweight and come in versions meant for everything from backpacking and hiking to running and winter adventure racing. Snowshoeing is also inexpensive compared to other winter pursuits and easy to do, making it an ideal sport for just about anyone. "In the mid-90s was when the technology advanced and prices came down," said Joe Nicholls, who led a snowshoeing clinic at REI at the SouthSide Works last week. "It opened it up to a lot more people." story continues below
According to the Outdoor Industry Association, snowshoeing drew 5.5 million participants in 2005, over one-third between the ages of 16 and 24 and more from the Northeast, including Pennsylvania, than any other region of the United States. Last Saturday, Venture Outdoors led an intro to a snowshoeing trip that, despite lacking snow, was nonetheless sold out and had a waiting list. Participants still got a chance to strap on the snowshoes and try them out in a field before setting off on a regular hike at Harrison Hills Park in Natrona Heights.

Snowshoeing: The Other Winter Sport
We all know that snowboarding and skiing have been the spotlight sports of the winter, but have you ever been snowshoeing? If not, then it's time you hit the mountain trails with snowshoes on your feet. It is often said by snowshoers that if you can walk, you can snowshoe. Here are a few tips to make your first experience go smoothly... 1. Pick snowshoes that are lightweight. This is probably the most important factor in selecting snowshoes. These bad boys can range from super light, not more than a pound a piece, to weighing several pounds for each shoe. Imagine lugging around a brick on the bottom of you foot for a couple of miles - NOT FUN! Always pick the lightest snowshoe that seems to fit comfortably. 2. Get snowshoes that are rated for your weight. There is nothing worse than trekking out into the fresh, white powder and sinking up to your thigh, because you didn't get snowshoes that fit you properly. They have shoes that go from weight ratings of as little as 30 pounds, up to over 300 pounds. With all that variation, you are sure to find the right size and fit for you. 3. While this is a sport your whole family can do (even a three year old can throw on a small pair of snowshoes and head out for a hike), you definitely don't want to be snowshoeing difficult hills with your child. So, start off with appropriate rated trails and hikes. Work your way up to more advanced trails as your skills and comfort level improve.

Winter Snowshoeing Ah, the joy of snowshoeing... if you're a hiker in the summer, then you're a snowshoer in the winter. Have you tried modern snowshoes? If you haven't, you should. If you have, let's take your snowshoeing one step further. We've got so many trails to choose from. From easy to downright vigorous... all in the wilderness, in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. The highlight of winter snowshoeing is the abundance of animal tracks. We can teach you how to interpret them, which is useful knowledge that you can use for a lifetime. We frequently see tracks from elk, coyote, red fox, weasel, porcupine, squirrels, and sometimes bobcat. Wildlife is also more viewable in the winter, as they are forced out of the high mountains by deep snow. Elk, deer, procupine, squirrels and many types of birds are commonly seen on our outings. Snowshoeing with Trail Wise means being out in nature with family and good friends, smiles over a picnic lunch in the sunshine, with privacy and solitude that only the forest can provide. Relax and let your true selves come alive.

The sport asks only a small financial investment and some snowy terrain to deliver tremendous fitness rewards. If you're up for trying a new winter sport this season, check out these important tips from Snowshoe Magazine's Guide to Snowshoeing
  • If you know how to walk, you can snowshoe. It's easy to learn and has a low risk of injury. Snowshoeing burns more than 600 calories an hour. Amazingly, snowshoers can rip through 45 percent or more calories than walking or jogging at the same speed. Out of the three types of snowshoes sold (Recreational Hiking, Aerobic/Fitness, Hiking/Backpacking), Recreational Hiking designs are ideal for the novice snow-walker not gunning for steep climbing or descents. A pair of snowshoes will cost around $100 on the low-end and around $300 or more on the high-end.

Introduction
Snowshoeing is a great way to enjoy Alaska in the winter. All too often the snow gets too deep to allow travel into the skirts of Anchorage, let alone the wilderness.

Never been out snowshoeing? It's easy - if you can walk, you can snowshoe. If you've never been, you may wish to consider renting a pair of shoes before purchasing; this can help with a few potential problems: 1 - You get a chance to determine if this is something you will enjoy 2 - You get a chance to try out some rather pricey gear before you pay (various bindings, platforms, etc.) Many folks start with inexpensive shoes and upgrade when they wear them out. This is a good way to give it a good effort before you spend a couple hundred dollars on a quality shoe. Yes, you can spend quite a bit on a pair of shoes, but, you will quickly learn that there are bindings you like, and bindings you don't like. If you go with the modern shoes, most of these bindings have modern securing mechanisms that will release fairly easily, even if covered in snow and ice. However, you may find a set that you have to 'tie' into, which means these can be very difficult to remove at the end of the day.

Snowshoes work by distributing the weight of the person over a larger area so that the person's foot doesn't sink completely into the snow, a quality called "flotation". Traditional snowshoes have a hardwood frame with rawhide lacings. Some modern snowshoes are similar, but most are made of light metal while others are a single piece of plastic attached to the foot to spread the weight. In addition to distributing the weight, snowshoes are generally raised at the toe for maneuverability. They must not accumulate snow, hence the latticework , and require bindings to attach them to the feet. While today they are mainly used for recreational purposes, primarily by hikers and runners who like to continue their hobby in wintertime, in the past they were essential tools for fur traders, trappers and anyone whose life or living depended on the ability to get around in areas of deep and frequent snowfall. Even today, snowshoes are necessary equipment for
