As the sport of snowboarding was growing and maturing during the early 90's, the founders of Raging Buffalo saw that snowboarders were being treated as second class citizens at the local ski areas. As a result, the concept of a "snowboard exclusive" area was born. It was this "snowboarder's only" stance that created the most buzz in the snowboard community. A lease was arranged with the Kane County Forest Preserve and in January of 1993 the ski area previously known as Buffalo Park Ski Area became the site of Raging Buffalo Snowboard Park officially the world's first snowboard exclusive area RAGING BUFFALO SNOWBOARD SKI PARK ALLOWS SKIERS.

Helmets Jumps Safety for Snowboarders
Snowboarding is one of the fasting growing winter sports. The appeal of the sport is often the risk associated with it. Younger people who enjoy "living on the edge" like the freedom that comes with the speed, the jumps and the daring board tricks. According to the Canadian Ski Council, in the 2004-2005 season there were 800,000 Canadian snowboarders aged 12 and over. Although a diverse range of people enjoy the sport, 60 percent of snowboarders are male and 77 percent are 24 years of age or younger.
Preventing Injuries
As boarding continues to gather enthusiasts, its increasing popularity is leading to more injuries.
While the number of snowboarding injuries has not surpassed those related to skiing (three to four injuries per 1,000 exposure days for both), boarding injuries are usually more severe. US data show that 38 per cent of snowboarding injuries are fractures, as opposed to 15 per cent for skiing. The Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (CHIRRP) collects data for children seen at the emergency rooms of 16 hospitals. Snowboarding cases per 10,000 injuries rose from less than one in 1990 to over 111 in 2000. Eighty-eight per cent of the children injured while snowboarding were between the ages of 10 and 19, and 80 per cent of those injured were boys. Half of the injuries were fractures, of which over 40 per cent were to the arm.

VT REGIONS
Southern South Central North Central Champlain Valley ... Northeast Kingdom S nowboarding's history shows many influences, such as surfing, skateboarding, snurfing, and skiing. It's roots may even be traced back to the early 1920's. Then children built what would now be considered makeshift snowboards out of barrel staves and rode them sideways down a snowy hill. That was the beginning. Vermont played a large part in the early days of snowboarding. It was the state in which the snurfer (snow-surfer) became the snowboard with the help of Jake Burton Carpenter and his garage workshop in Manchester, Vt. Jake had a vision: to bring snowboarding to the world. He began shaping snowboards in the mid 70's out of wood, and fixing rubber straps on them for bindings. This vision apparently succeeded, for he is now the owner of Burton Snowboards , a forerunner in the snowboard industry. He has deeply influenced what snowboarding has become today. Vermont was home to the first established snowboard competitions in the late 70's and early 80's: the National Races at Suicide Six in Pomfret, Vt. Interest in this new sport later spawned The U.S. Open first held at Magic Mountain, the first renowned snowboard competition. The U.S. Open is now possibly the most well known snowboard event in the world, and is now held at Stratton Mountain Resort.

Question

What is the physics involved in snowboarding? Asked by: Mary Lou Campbell Answer There are many tricky aspects to snowboarding that involve a great deal of skill and agility. First lets understand the movement of the person and board over the snow. The board moves quickly down the hill because it is lubricated by the water present in the snow. When the board is placed on top of the snow, the contact between the snow and board creates friction which melts a small amount of water. This water is present throughout the length of the board (or at least the length of it that's in contact with the snow) and when the rider is coasting down the mountain she is actually coasting on a very thin film of water. Shredding is also important to making it down the hill in one piece. This is accomplished when the rider shifts his/her weight and moves the board from one edge to the other. The rider must be careful to keep their center of gravity over the edge of the board that is in contact with the snow. If the rider fails to do so, the most common experience is to land on for them to land on their back or front (depending on which board edge they are switching to). To slow down and turn, a boarder 'digs' into the snow with their riding edge and leans in the direction they want to move. The larger amount of snow and and the force of gravity create a set of forces whose net force push the board in the direction desired by the rider.

The exciting, brash sport gained international popularity over the next few decades, making its debut as an Olympic sport in 1998 at the Nagano Games, which featured both halfpipe and giant slalom events. The giant slalom was replaced four years later in Salt Lake with the exciting parallel giant slalom. Snowboarding competition in Torino will consist of men's and women's halfpipe, parallel giant slalom and snowboard cross. The halfpipe is an acrobatic event held in a half-cylinder-shaped course dug into the hill. Using speed gained on the slope, snowboarders sail over the rim of the pipe and perform aerial maneuvers – such as the Poptart and the McTwist.

Preventing Snowboarding Injuries
In a time when the number of skiers has declined 25%, the number of snowboarders has increased 77%, making snowboarding the fastest growing winter sport in the US. Today, more than 3.4 million people snowboard. They now comprise about 20% of the visitors to US ski resorts. Snowboarding typically involves riding an epoxy-fiberglass board (resembling a large skateboard) down a ski slope or specially constructed pipe. The standard snowboarding stance is much like that of a surfer with toes pointed to the side of the board. Snowboarders ride with both feet affixed to the board by non-releasable bindings. They do not typically use ski poles. Safety equipment, which is usually used by racers but only sometimes by recreational snowboarders, includes helmets, goggles, face guards, wrist guards and forearm guards. There are three styles of boots worn by snowboarders: soft, hard and hybrid. Most recreational snowboarders use soft boots, which allow moderate stability and moderate flexibility. Hard boots, primarily worn by racers, provide greater ankle support and increased control. Hybrid boots balance the increased stability of hard boots with the increased comfort and maneuvering ability of soft boots. Each type of boot places the body under different stresses. Hard boots, for example, place the snowboarder at approximately twice the risk of a knee injury compared with soft boots, while soft boots give the snowboarder about twice the risk of ankle injury compared to hard boots. Hiking boots or "moon boots" should never be worn for snowboarding as they significantly increase the risk for serious injury.
