WARNING: DO NOT GO SNOWBOARDING WITHOUT THIS!!! "Have you had the misfortune of suffering a snowboarding related injury? Are you going snowboarding for the first time? Want the confidence to try all those cool new tricks you've seen the pros do in the magazines?" Each year, there are in excess of 150,000 injuries and dozens of deaths related to skiing and snowboarding combined, according to Jeffrey Hadley, Ph.D., an epidemiologist with the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and a former Ski Instructor. Here are some of the most common reasons for snowboarding injuries:
  • Lack of necessary skills Muscle fatigue, a.k.a., “leg burn” Tiredness or sleepiness Alcohol intoxication or a hangover Poor visibility or blizzard conditions Dull edges on hard snow conditions Fear and anxiety Snowboarding too fast, relative to your ability

Introduction top Injury rates
Current injury rate in Scotland - 3.55 injuries per 1000 boarder days (281 MDBI)
Explain what this means In terms of injury rates, most ski physicians agree that boarding carries a slightly higher risk of injury than alpine skiing - between 3-4 injuries per thousand boarder days (as compared to 2-3 per thousand days for alpine skiing injuries). Remember though - this rate is still very low - at worst 0.4%! Another way of looking at injury risk to calculate the mean days between injury - this is the total number of snowboarder days in a season divided by the number of injuries seen. The higher the value, the less likely an injury is to occur. Overall, there are about 250 MDBI for all snowboarding injuries. This means that an individual snowboarder is likely to injure some area of the body every 250 days they spend snowboarding. Given that the average boarder does about 12 days per season

Ambient Intelligence: Snowboarding To The New Frontier
ScienceDaily (Jan. 16, 2008) See also: The My Space/Facebook phenomenon has shown how we love to share personal information. But will we take the next step and share our feelings and emotions across the ether? Whether it is sensors on our skin, in our clothing or embedded in the environment, research into ambient intelligence is advancing in leaps and bounds. We could soon be using technology in a whole new, human-centric way. But before we can fully interact in a responsive electronic environment, a number of obstacles need to be overcome. For example, the development of miniaturised, unobtrusive hardware, clever interfaces, data-secure systems, autonomous and flexible network protocols, and more efficient wireless infrastructures. There are already diverse applications using ambient technology on the market, but one crucial sticking point is that few of them are fully integrated into wireless communication systems. European researchers have been addressing this outstanding issue. Remote emoting The potential for applications is vast: it goes from entertainment, to e-health and safety, and industrial applications, such as remote asset monitoring. The consortium behind this, which includes a number of European universities, research institutes and companies, such as Telefonica, IBM, Fujitsu, Thales, Nokia Siemens Networks, EADS and Mitsubishi, has developed 26 scenarios and 16 audiovisual showcases demonstrating the use of sensor networks to capture ambient intelligence and use it in mobile communications.

How to start snowboarding
By Robert Green on June 8, 2007 5:07 PM Permalink Comments (7) TrackBacks (2) (Ride No.4 with Ride Mig Bindings) At the age of 12 I talked my parents into buying me my first snowboard. Armed with a hollow, plastic, single tipped behemoth called "black snow", I was ready to tame the 60 foot hills of my parents' western-minnesota lake cabin. I tried and tried but the dream of carving out paths in maplewood state park just never came to fruition. I gave up then, but 10 years later I was on a proper mountain receiving my first lesson from a friend on how to do the real thing. Snowboarding can be a very intimidating sport. All I heard about before starting is that I was definitely going get hurt or at least be very sore. I've found these statements to be mostly correct, but don't let that sway you from trying. The first day for me was the hardest and after that, I found it to be very enjoyable, more so than skiing. Get your gear For your first day, rentals should be fine. I would like to point out, though, that properly fitted boots and a good board with strap on bindings are much easier to ride than the worn out rental step-ins most places offer. If you have an option of getting a pro or demo setup, I think it's better for your first day than the low-end stuff. I'm sure many people will say, "I'm not a pro. I don't need that." It's true, you're not riding for money, but the higher end gear gives you much more control, which generally results in less falling.

Anatomy of a snowboard Developed in the 1960s, snowboarding is believed to have originated in the United States, where several inventors explored the idea of surfing on the snow. The sport quickly evolved, and the early, rudimentary boards gave way to designs that are specialized to meet the demands of different competitions. The basic design is a board (much like an oversized, wheel-less skateboard) to which the rider's feet are attached with bindings. No poles are used; racers push off from stationary posts. The size and shape of a snowboard varies according to the intended use of the board and the size of the snowboarder. However, the average size of a board is 150 cm (5 ft) in length and 25 cm (10 in) in width. A board may have a deep sidecut (giving it a shape similar to an hourglass) in order to facilitate sharper turns. A leash connected to the snowboarder's ankle prevents the board from sliding away after a fall.
