Cancel Sledding Safety the Ups and Downs When those first snowflakes start drifting out of the sky, do your children have their faces up against the window watching in amazement? Then it won't be long before the sleds are out and everyone's bundling up for a trek to the slopes.
Every year between 30,000 and 35,000 children across the United States are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries sustained while sledding. One in 25 of those injured will require hospitalization.
Both the severity of sledding injuries and the type of injury are directly related to a child's age and the type of downhill vehicle. The terrain of the hill and the slickness of the surface are additional factors related to the severity of an injury. The child's position on the sled is related to the type of injury. Children under 5 suffer the most severe injuries to the head, neck, face and abdomen. These children typically ride a metal runner sled, laying on their stomachs and controlling the steering mechanism with their hands. Injuries most commonly occur when sled and rider collide with a tree or a telephone pole. Hands and fingers are often injured when caught under the runners, or between the sled and another object.

My mission
At Peace Pups Dogsledding and Bike Tours I am striving to be a small sustainable business. Custom bike tours for all ages and abilities.
Custom bike tours for all ages and abilities. Read our check list below then call to discuss your custom tour. I will pick up and transport a rental bike for you and will make sure it is set up and fits you properly before embarking on your tour.
Considerations for your ride:
What type of ride do you want to do, strictly paved roads, paved and dirt, or trails? How much time do you want to be out? What is your riding ability and physical condition? Do you need a rental bike? How far are you willing to drive to reach the start of your ride? (there are some great rides in the Northeast Kingdom as well as some flatter rides in the Champlain Valley that would require a half hour to forty five minute drive from Stowe)

Sledding down the Alps
If there's one thing the Swiss do right, it's sledding. OK, they actually do several things right (melted cheese, dark chocolate, public transportation, yodeling...), but sledding is one of the most fun. It's a completely different activity here than the sledding I grew up with in the US, which consisted of trudging up a small hill dragging a plastic disc and then flying down said hill on said disk, landing in an uncomfortably cold pile of icy snow only to brush off and trudge back up the hill.
In this country, sledding (or sledging, as they seem to think it is called in English) is much longer on the downhill, and much less strenuous on the uphill. A more satisfying experience all around. Here's how it usually works:
(1) You spend around CHF 10 on renting a quaintly old-fashioned-looking wooden sled (or sledge, if you speak that wonky British version of this language);

Sledding Sledding down the slip face of dunes is a popular activity at White Sands National Monument. Most sledders use waxed plastic snow saucers (which can be purchased at the park gift shop). Choose a dune that is away from the roadway and parking areas and is free of vegetation. Tips for Safe Sledding Sliding downhill is an exhilarating sport. The proper position for sledding is to sit or lay on your back on the top of the sled, with your feet pointing downhill. Sledding head first increases the risk of head injury and should be avoided. Do not stand up while sledding.

Photo by andrewfjohnson Winter is a great time for dog sledding. Here is some information about sled dogs and the sport of dog sledding.
Sled Dog Breeds And Sled Dog Racing
By Rebecca Prescott Sled dog breeds are characterized by endurance, strength, and intelligence. They are usually medium to larger dogs, with a very muscular build, and have helped mankind transport supplies in times before the automobile. Nowadays, sled dog breeds are found as pets, as well as trained to participate in sled dog racing. Sled dogs were developed to withstand very low temperatures. Their coats have a double layer, with the undercoat acting as insulation against the ice and snow. Because they have such thick coats, they need regular brushing and grooming. They also shed a lot, especially at the beginning of summer when they lose a lot of their undercoat. This could be a problem for people with dog allergies.
Sled Dogs at Sunset - Photo by jurvetson Traditional sled dog breeds include the Siberian Husky , the Alaskan Malamute , the Chinook, the Sakhalin Husky, the Canadian Eskimo dog, the Seppala Siberian sled dog, the Tamaskan husky, the Samoyed, the Eurohound, the Mackenzie River husky, and the Greenland dog.

Locus Magazine
, December 2005 "Crutcher takes the fad in authorial intrusion one better, inserting himself as a character in this metafictional novel with a ... highly entertaining plot."
STARRED REVIEW, Publishers Weekly (June 6, 2005)
STARRED REVIEW, School Library Journal “This oft-censored author entertains, inspires, invites intellectual inquiry and concedes well-meaning motives to both sides . . . a lot to pack into a novel, but when did Crutcher ever pack light?”
STARRED REVIEW, Kirkus "... themes of senseless tragedy and intellectual freedom serve as a natural postscript to [Crutcher's] memoir, but this isn't nonfiction. In fact, it defies categorization, offering up a smorgasbord of literaty devices ... elective mutism, a narrator from beyond the grave, and a plot in which the author himself plays a major role."
