Each sled is carefully handcrafted by Dan and Kim Schlosser. Aluminum Frames We have custom tubing extruded for us by Alcoa in the USA.  Frames are anodized in red, blue, or black. Custom finishes available. Tru-Ski Runners Tool-less Runner Change Swap runners in minutes without tools.  3 pins are used to attach each runner to the frame.  These pins can be removed without tools.  With the runners removed, the frames fold down for storage or transport. Spherical Joints Our sled designs are unique in that we use true spherical bearing joints in our cross braces.  This enables the sled to rack while still maintaining precisely controlled runner paths.  Smoother ride, better tracking, extreme cornering, less drag. Rack-ability Our sleds rack nearly 30 degrees each way.  Other sled manufacturers don’t specify rack-ability.  We do because it is crucial to cornering capability.  Rack stiffness is adjustable to suit your driving style. Stainless Steel Brakes Our Dual Claw brake is made entirely from precision formed and TIG welded stainless steel.  Replaceable carbide points are standard.  Special elastomer mounting bushings won’t restrict

Peninsula Sled Dog and Racing Association
About the club
  • Come to the PSDRA Trailhead this weekend: Feb 10-11 for the PSDRA Classic. The PSDRA Classic is a two day race with day money and final placing money. There will be a 4 mile, 6 mile, 10 mile and skijoring races. Registration is at noon, the first race starts at 1:00pm. Club membership is required to run any of the races. Entry fee will be $5 per dog. Day money will be distributed to the top three finishers in each class.
  • A short history of PSDRA: Organized in 1962 the PSDRA was established to encourage breeding and training of sled dogs, holding sled dog races for speed, endurance distance and weight handicaps. It was also founded to foster social, educational and business relationships between and among members; and to broaden the interest in the pursuit of advancement of Alaska sled dogs.
  • Mushing: Racing for fun and prizes most weekends (check the schedule for dates)! Club races start at 1:00pm, skijoring starts at 11:00am. We also support various organizations in the community by showing up with our dogs! Last year, several of our mushers gave rides at Solid Rock Bible Camp for a Fetal Alcohol Syndrom Awareness Activity. We also host a Special Olympics ride every year and a Businessman's race, both fundraisers. Our two big prize money races for this year are the Clark / Bradford Memorial, and the PSDRA Classic, both at the Soldotna Airport on Funny River Road. These are just a few of the events we have planned for this coming year!

Dog-sled boom is turning "mush" into gold
By Kevin Sullivan and Mary Jordan The Washington Post PREV of NEXT KEVIN SULLIVAN A team of Alaskan Huskies pulls a sled from Jukkasjarvi, one of Sweden's northernmost villages. "They are happy when they run," said Kalle Leissner, a bearded Swedish musher whose dog teams are part of a global boom in sled-dog racing and tourism that stretches from the snowy woods of Alaska to the sandy Outback of Australia. Warming climates, thinning out the snow, have helped drive interest in dry-land competitions in places not normally associated with dogs and sleds, such as Argentina, New Zealand and Mongolia. Dog breeders and tour operators said the rising interest comes in part from the bull market for environmentally friendly vacations. Prices for dog-sled tours vary by region. A four-hour trip in Canada can cost $100; four hours in Sweden costs more than twice that much.

Prepared by Judy Bernard
Learning Center Divison; Edgewood School
Woodbridge, IL Dist. 68
Overall Intent:
The overall intent of this unit is to help the students learn about the current Iditarod Dog Sled Race and it's history through a variety of activities. This annual race calls attention to Alaska's past and the sport of dog sled racing. A portion of the race follows part of the trail used during Alaska's Gold Rush in the 1880s. Another portion follows part of the trail used by dog sleds to deliver serum to Nome during the diphtheria epidemic of 1925. As culminating activities, students will role play the part of a musher and create free-verse poems or historical fiction stories about their role. Students will also debate some of the issues that surround the race.
Objectives:
Information will be presented through a variety of different media and activities, to give the students an opportunity:
  • to learn basic facts about the Iditarod Dog Sled Race and the dog sled relay which delivered diphtheria serum to Nome, Alaska during the epidemic of 1925

The facts about dog sled racing are simple, dog sled racing is highly competative winter sport, where a team of sled dogs controlled by a musher. The sleds are timed over a course, the fastest team over the course is the winner. The sport also can take place on non snow courses with wheels rather than skies on the sleds.
Dog sled racing sees the teams start at regular intervals, its mostly timed events over distances that vary from 4 miles to 1000+miles . The facts about dog sled racings use of this style of racing is simple its logistically tough to start multiple teams of excited dogs all together. That said some racing in Canada mostly, use the mass start style. Races also differ in setup, with not only different race styles and distances, but also differing amounts of dogs allowed. Three-dog, six dog and 12 dog+ are the usual catagories, although other denomination are common also.

    http://www.vul.fi/english/introduction.htm
Sleddog Racing - the dog-powered sport
Sleddog racing is based on cooperation between dog and mankind. It is divided into three different styles, the Nome style, the Pulka style and the skijoring as the newest style. The Pulka style, on the other hand, originates from Norway and Sweden. The absolute most popular breed in competitions is the German short-haired pointer, but some bird dogs or their crossbreeds and Dobermans are also used. German shepherds and Belgium shepherds also appear in their own separate classes. In skijoring the dog doesn't have to pull the pulka. That separates it from pulka style. In USA, Kanada and Alaska this form of skiing with dog is much more popular than it is in Europe. The same breed can be used in skijoring as in pulka style. Skijoring also fits better to smaller and tenderer breeds than pulka style.
    The Nome Style
In Nome style racing, the sled is pulled by 4, 6, 8, or an unlimited number of dogs. The driver steers his sled by shouting right-left commands to his lead dogs while standing on the runners and kicking or running up hills to gain more speed. The competition distances get longer as the number of dogs increases, and in sprint competitions the distances range from 7-26 km. The sprint races are usually driven over two consecutive days on the same track, and the final standings are based on the combined elapsed times. Men and women drivers compete in the same classes.
