Training in Increments Basic Healthcare ... and many more Sled Dog Racing By Doug Willett Dogs have been used as draft animals for centuries. Early explorers of the Arctic returned with drawings of dog teams pulling sleds with only a simple leather thong about the neck of the dog as a harness. Centuries have passed since then, and the reasons for dog driving, as well as the means for carrying it out, have changed. Up until perhaps the early 1920’s, dog teams were the primary means of transportation in the Arctic, but after that, their main reason to be gradually took on a sporting and recreational veneer. Sled dog racing in a personal context, “I bet I can cross this lake before you can”, undoubtedly always was present. However, formal structured racing as we know it today probably had its beginning with the formation of the Nome Kennel Club in 1906. The main purpose of the Nome Kennel Club was to organize a series of races to encourage the breeding and training of better sled dogs, whose primary use still would be as transportation vehicles. The most important race organized by the Nome Club was the 408-mile All-Alaska Sweepstakes, which continued through 1917. The end of the Alaska gold rush, World War I and the advent of mechanized modes of transportation brought an end to the Nome Kennel Club and transportation as the main purpose of teams. Races in other Alaskan villages continued and a new purpose, recreation and sport, became the focus for sled dog teams.

A selection of articles discussing this topic.
Main article: dogsled racing
sport of racing sleds pulled by dogs, usually over snow-covered cross-country courses. In warmer climates, wheeled carts are substituted for the sleds. Dogsledding was developed from a principal Eskimo method of transportation. The gold rushes in Alaska and the Yukon Territory at the turn of the 20th century brought greater global attention to sled dogs, which were used at that time for freight...
role of Butcher
Butcher first entered the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1978. The roughly 1,100-mile (1,770-km) Iditarod is the longest and most physically challenging of all sled-dog races. Butcher twice finished in second place (1982, 1984). She began the 1985 race with a solid lead but was eliminated from the competition when a moose charged across her path, killing 2 of her dogs and wounding 13. That... No results were returned.

Racing updates Peter McClelland signs up for the 2008 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon! Peter's love of the sport of sled dogs propells him to test his personal endurance along with his canine companions in the gruling 400 mile race cource of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. Race Highlights For almost twenty years, from 1879 to 1899, John Bear grease and his brothers delivered the mail in northern Minnesota, covering the route between Two Harbors and Grand Marais. The constant elevation changes of the north shore trails, limited equipment, and loads weighing as much as 700 pounds made this weekly trip an incredible feat for a person to accomplish alone with their team of dogs.
In 1982 the Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon was created as a way to remember the historic role that John Beargrease and sled dogs played in this region. The race follows along the north shore of Lake Superior and travels through the Saw Tooth Mountains. Although not true mountains today, the Saw Tooth Mountains used to be a towering range. Time and weather have eroded these mountains into many formidable hills, making the race a challenge with hundreds of ups and downs. This year I raced the Beargrease Marathon, a 375-mile race. My 12-dog team was made up of some veterans of the Iditarod, but mostly it was young dogs. The veterans were there to help the rookies, which included the younger dogs as well as myself. They helped us learn what can be done when we put our minds together. Knock, who ran for John Baker in the '03 Iditarod and Jamie Nelson in the '02 Race to the Sky, was especially helpful.

Dogsled racing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Frank Turner racing the Yukon Quest 2005 Dogsled racing is a winter dog sport involving the timed competition of teams of sleddogs that pull a sled with the dog driver or musher standing on the runners. The team completing the marked course in the least time is adjudged the winner. Dog Sled Racing is also a fall sport where competitors use a rig ( 3-4 wheeled cart with a locking brake and handle/steering wheel) or scooter on dirt or mud instead of a sled on snow. Dogsled races may be sprint races over relatively short distances of 4 to 25 miles/day, mid-distance races from 28 to 200 miles, or long-distance races of 200 to over 1000 miles. The most famous long-distance race is the Iditarod . Sprint races frequently are two or three-day events with heats run on successive days with the same dogs over the same course. Mid-distance races are either heat races of 14 to 80 miles per day, or continuous races of 100 to 200 miles usually. (These categories are informal and may overlap to a certain extent.) Long-distance races may be continuous or stage races , in which participants run a different course each day, usually from a central staging location.

As long as there is snow, there's bound to be someone somewhere running a team of dogs through it. Mushing is a recreation that has peaked and ebbed over the last thirty years - the 1980's being a high point, when almost everyone in America had at least heard the word Iditarod and watched the race between Rick Swenson and Susan Butcher with an interest that was reminiscent of the Riggs and King tennis match of the '70's. Many new mushers joined the bandwagon during this period, and hobby farmers were suddenly raising sled dogs instead of chickens. "Man would not be on the face of the earth if it had not been for the domestic dog," says Edward Dallas, as we visit with him at his home in Deerwood, Minnesota. Ed had a 10-minute stint as "Gunnar Tveit" in the Disney film Iron Will , and he had this to ask us: "What possessed the dog to break away from the wolf, the jackal, the fox, and step into that circle of light cast by our cavemen ancestors' campfire? Something had to possess him to say, 'I will step inside that circle.' And when he did, I think it was a bond that was set for the rest of time." These sentiments expressed by Dallas, a veteran dog musher, could probably be echoed by canine lovers all around the globe. But especially by dog mushers, who by choice spend the greater part of their day with their dogs. Sled dogs are mainly Alaskan Huskies, a Heinz 57 dog bred to pull and travel. "They were bred out of the Siberian Husky during the gold rush days," Dallas explains, "with Indian dogs, and other big dogs in the arctic, and a wolf thrown in here and there."
