At Anduril, Rob and Cara Greger presently live with 40 dogs, and all of the dogs are important members of their family. They work with training, good nutrition, care, and love to make the most of each dog's potential. Because of their love of dogs and dedication to the sport of mushing, Rob and Cara make many public appearances and initiate programs for school children each year. Rob also works on the board of directors for The Race To The Sky, and he is a regular speaker at the Montana Sleddog Rondevous and Trade Show each year. Rob and Cara both do a great deal of volunteer work with the local animal shelter. In the 94-95 race season, Rob and "the kids" placed in the top ten in four of the five races they entered. In the fifth race, in which they did not place in the top ten, they received the "Best Cared for Team" award.

Sled Dog Breeds And Sled Dog Racing
Modern sled dog racing produces some interesting variations on what many consider an addictive, adrenaline filled sport. Learn about the sled dog breeds, and the breed most typically used in racing, the Alaskan husky.
Enlarge Image Sled dog breeds are characterized by endurance, strength, and intelligence. They are usually medium to larger dogs, with a very muscular build, and have helped mankind transport supplies in times before the automobile.
Nowadays, sled dog breeds are found as pets, as well as trained to participate in sled dog racing.
Sled dogs were developed to withstand very low temperatures. Their coats have a double layer, with the undercoat acting as insulation against the ice and snow. Because they have such thick coats, they need regular brushing and grooming. They also shed a lot, especially at the beginning of summer when they lose a lot of their undercoat. This could be a problem for people with dog allergies.
Traditional sled dog breeds include the Siberian Husky, the Alaskan Malamute, the Chinook, the Sakhalin Husky, the Canadian Eskimo dog, the Seppala Siberian sled dog, the Tamaskan husky, the Samoyed, the Eurohound, the Mackenzie River husky, and the Greenland dog.

Sled Dog Racing
Sled Dog racing is the world's fastest growing winter sport and Scotland's where it's happening. There are over 150 competitive teams in Scotland comprising of Siberian Huskies; Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, Eskimo Dogs and purpose bred Eurohounds. These dogs are elite athletes as well as beloved pets, and they live to run. The sport takes place on Forest tracks (kinder on the dog's feet) and there are races and training areas from Dumfries and Galloway in the south to Invernesshire in the North.
The largest Sled Dog race in Europe takes place each January in Aviemore.
But surely you ask, you need snow? No, the dogs pull a 3 wheeled 'rig' on dry land.
Thanks to Steven Lindsay for supplying us with the facts.

Very few kennels operate a dedicated team for taking out passengers in the UK due to the less favourable climatic conditions. However, individual mushers may be willing to let you have a go.

It ended early for the four-time champion Doug Swingley. The Lincoln, Montana, musher withdrew on Monday after being injured in a spill on a slick and icy hill a few miles before the Rainy Pass checkpoint, just two days into the 1,090-mile, or 1,760-kilometer, race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. Race officials said the 53-year-old Swingley might have broken ribs and dislocated a thumb. He told them he wanted to withdraw because he did not think he could properly care for his dog team. Race rules do not allow mushers to get help with the care and feeding of their dogs.
