By Susan Arendt Categories: Portable Gaming Despite being a fan of the series, The Escapist 's Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw was underwhelmed and disappointed by Silent Hill: Origins for the PSP, finding fault with just about everything except perhaps the game's title. Having played Origins , I'll vouch for his complaints about the combat (it's drek), but I thought it pulled off the franchise's trademark atmosphere quite well. I do agree, however, that Silent Hill 2 is the best of the bunch, by far.

Skin-care industry skipping out on science?
BOSTON, Aug. 22, 2007 — The multi-billion-dollar global cosmetics and skin-care-product industry sometimes is beset by a me-too mindset in which research and development focuses on matching the competition rather than applying sound science to improve products, a scientist told the 234th national meeting of the American Chemical Society. As a result, it could be missing a golden opportunity to provide consumers with more effective products, according to a Stig E. Friberg, Ph.D. a chemist who studies cosmetic ingredients. As an example, Friberg points out that previously unknown changes occur in the structures of colloids used in skin care lotions. As a result, the lotion sitting in the bottle, he said, is actually different from the same lotion applied to the skin. Friberg has spent years in fundamental studies of the backbone of any lotion — a mixture or “emulsion” of oil and water. Along with a third ingredient, a surfactant that keeps the liquids from separating, emulsions are the basis of almost every skin lotion. Although the system may sound simplistic, Friberg said it’s not as straightforward as scientists once believed.

Fred Thompson: I'm Skipping New Hampshire
By Eric Kleefeld - January 4, 2008, 10:15PM Fred Thompson has performed dismally in New Hampshire polls, and he clearly knows it — he says he's skipping the state. Thompson admitted today on MSNBC: "We're not competitive in New Hampshire. And we won’t be campaigning there other than to go in for the debates which are tomorrow night and sunday night." Instead, his campaign sent out a fundraising e-mail today asking for help so that they could compete in South Carolina , where the Republicans will vote on January 19. Can this strategy have any hope of working, with Mike Huckabee already having won Iowa, taken the lead in South Carolina polls, and on the whole occupied the role of the Southern conservative candidate? Quite frankly, it's starting to sound like Rudy Giuliani's improbable February 5 strategy — but on a smaller, less ambitious scale. PERMALINK F. Thompson

January 8, 2004 With a sidearm toss and flick of the wrist, people young and old have been skipping stones across bodies of water for thousands of years. The object is simple: get as many bounces as possible. Jerdone Coleman McGhee of Wimberley, Texas, holds the current Guinness Book of World Records title for a 1992 toss that yielded an impressive 38 bounces across the Blanco River in central Texas. Email to a Friend RELATED Want a shot at beating McGhee? Toss your stone so it hits the water at the "magic angle" of 20 degrees. The hint comes from a team of French scientists who constructed a stone-skipping machine to find out the optimal speed, spin, and angle for the maximum number of bounces. Bocquet and his colleagues published their findings in last week's issue of the science journal Nature

    Romney Skipping South Carolina
by Doug Mataconis @ 9:45 am on January 17, 2008. The Politico reports that Just a day after his big win in Michigan, Mitt Romney ceded South Carolina to his rivals. “This is a state I’d expect that Sen. [John] McCain has pretty well wrapped up,” Romney told reporters at the Sun City Hilton Head Retirement Center in Bluffton. “It would be an enormous surprise if he were unable to win here.” Romney’s South Carolina strategy amounts to being politically half-pregnant. He doesn’t want to raise expectations in a state he likely can’t win, so he’s dashing off to Nevada midday Thursday to compete in the lightly contested caucuses there Saturday. But at the same time, he doesn’t want to offend his supporters in South Carolina. Polls show Romney standing in solid third place in South Carolina, taking anywhere from 13 percent to 17 percent of the vote. But in Bluffton, Romney put himself in fourth place, noting that “even a strong fourth is better than what some of the other guys saw in Michigan last night.” link The URI to TrackBack this entry is: http://belowthebeltway.com/2008/01/17/romney-skipping-south-carolina/trackback/

Pollsters have a plan for Nevada: Skip it
Most say we’re too green at caucusing, too transient
By Brian Eckhouse Michael Mishak Fri, Jan 11, 2008 (2 a.m.) National public opinion pollsters, fresh off a glaring failure to pick the winner in New Hampshire’s presidential primary, are now violently queasy about trying to predict a winner in Nevada. In fact, for a variety of reasons, major news organizations are taking a pass on polling before Nevada’s Jan. 19 caucus. The concerns stem from the New Hampshire mistake and from knowledge that Nevada has a large transient population not familiar with the workings of a big-time caucus. By comparison, New Hampshire is a state with a long history of political participation, a stable population and a history of respected surveys that have accurately gauged the preferences of the electorate. Nevertheless, the polls had

The Caucus The latest political news from around the nation. Join the discussion. The recommendation to pull out of Iowa was in a memorandum written by Mike Henry, Mrs. Clinton’s deputy campaign manager. He made a case that Iowa would consume too much time and money that could be better invested elsewhere. Mr. Henry’s memorandum, dated May 21, said Mrs. Clinton would have to spend $15 million and 70 days in the state to be competitive there, and suggested that if she did not pull out she might not have the money she would need for the rapid-fire series of contests that follow. The Iowa caucuses are scheduled for Jan. 14, with the New Hampshire primary eight days later, Florida a week after that and about 20 other states on Feb. 5.
