Ski Resorts and Shops Near Pittsburgh
Many people in Western Pennsylvania, when they think of skiing or snowboarding, immediately think of Colorado or Vermont. Most don't realize the treasure of ski areas we have in our own backyard. Within 100 miles of Pittsburgh, there are 8 ski resorts, all of which are usually open by January 1 with an excellent base of snow ready for your skis or snowboard. These ski areas range from small inexpensive slopes such as Boyce Park (with it's 150 foot vertical and $8 lift ticket) which are great for learning (or relearning) to ski, to Blue Knob ski resort with the largest vertical drop and most challenging skiing in the area, to Seven Springs, one of the top-rated ski resorts in the East. Nearby West Virginia and New York offer even more skiing opportunities within a few hours drive.

Discover Greek skiing while it's still a secret
For updates on current conditions, check the Greek Snow Report link following this article. Greece is full of secrets, and one of the best is the selection of pristine mountains covered with winter snows. Neglected by many skiers addicted to better-known resorts in Switzerland, France, and Italy, Greece offers low prices and a good variety of slopes and ski centers. Relatively few foreigners ski Greece, and even avid skiers in other nations may be unaware of the Greek alternative. I once mentioned Greece as a possible destination to a British skier who looked at me as if I had just suggested that the permafrost on Mars was just right for cross-country skiing this year. But this may be changing. As ski resorts in the Balkans begin to draw more visitors, friendly Greece, already loved as a summertime getaway, is starting to attract more EU visitors and a scattering of Americans in search of inexpensive, unusual skiing. It may not stay a secret for long.

Website News:

November 2007 usually means much-above-normal snowfall for the Cascades (see the page for more info and stats). The season commenced in early October with major snowfall in the mountains of BC, WA, and northern OR, providing excellent early-season backcountry conditions. Then the heavy snowfall shifted north towards Alaska for much of November, and as of late November, mountain snowpacks range from near-normal in SW BC, dropping to 50-80% of normal in WA and northern OR, and then plummeting to 0-30% of normal in southern OR and northern CA. I have finally resumed updating this website after a lengthy hiatus of over a year. Hopefully I can continue making regular updates.

Interstate 80 is now closed per Caltrans reports and roads around the Reno area are becoming treacherous. Blizzard conditions are widespread in the Sierra with zero visibilities, the National Weather Service reported. A blizzard warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service is predicting more snow on Sunday, and additional frontal systems of varying strength in the extended period. In its detailed forecast Friday afternoon, Weather Service forecasters predicted the current storm would drop 31 to 45 inches of snow on Truckee-Tahoe by Saturday night. In a later forecast, the National Weather Service scaled back the snowfall prediction to 22 to 36 inches.
