Skijoring the Boundary Waters
Originating in Scandinavia, skijoring, which means "ski-driving" in Norwegian, combines dog mushing and cross country skiing. Skijoring allows a dog and its owner to enjoy the BWCA winter together. Imagine journeying across a Boundary Waters lake through the glistening ungroomed snow far from civilization. Overnight winter expeditions in the BWCA are not recommended for those who have not journeyed the BWCA before and who have not winter camped before. To carry your gear, a small sled, or pulk, is recommended. Any breed of dog has backwoods skijoring potential, but larger breeds, of course have greater strength. Skijoring in New England
What is skijoring? It's cross-country skiing with your dog! Here are some New England places where you can try skijoring, along with resources for getting started if you'd like to try this unique winter sport. Need a Workout? Give Skijoring a Try From MaineToday.com, here's a look at the resurgence of skijoring, a century-old sport, in Maine. It's a great way for you AND your dog to stay fit. Skijoring at Eden Mountain Lodge Eden Mountain Lodge in Eden Mills, Vermont, is owned by Vermont Skijor Champion Jim Blair. Stay here, and he can help get you started by showing you and your dog the ropes. Skijoring at the Bethel Inn The Bethel Inn in Bethel, Maine, has a skijoring loop trail available for those who'd like to try this snow sport. Skijoring at the Telemark Inn The Telemark Inn in Bethel, Maine, was the first ski touring center in the Continental US to offer skijoring packages and lessons. If you don't have a dog of your own, you can still try skijoring with the inn's Siberian Huskies.

591 Kings Highway, Mason Township, Maine 04217 Phone: 207-836-2703 Cell: 207-731-6888 Are you an older skier looking for new tricks? Did you begin Nordic skiing after the disenchantment of a frenetic lift-served slope? Maybe you started telemarking, or skating or teleskating and yet you are still searching for your niche on skis. Steve Crone has a suggestion for you. You need to try skijoring. For a joy beyond description you need to borrow a little steam from your faithful four-legged friend. Skijoring utilizes the high spirit of the canine cruisers to inject the thrill of speed and the harmony found in the human/dog partnership into the serenity and joy of the natural setting of Nordic trails. An added beauty of this new sport, actually a descendant of Norwegian freight transportation, is that you don't have to invest a small fortune to outfit yourself with new gear. Nordic gear, a harness for you, a harness for your dog (collars can be deadly), and a skijoring line, which is simply a regular line with a bungee attachment. That's it! You and your best friend can be off, grooving in sync down the trails. Where does one start this new sport that fuses the grace of descending in a telemark/Nordic turn, the intensity of a high speed husky and the powerful liberation from gravity in a skated stride? The wide groomed trails of the Telemark Inn in Western Maine are the perfect setting for starting your pilgrimage to skiing-Mecca. You can start slow and take a lesson from proprietor Steve Crone, and his Siberian Huskies. You might wait until you've practiced on a few trails before adding Steve's turbo-charged secret to your experience. Steve's secret is Baxter, the German, short haired pointer streak of lightning.

Wayward muskrat goes from skijoring trails to Chena River home
By Tim Mowry
Staff Writer
Published December 11, 2007
Neither Bacsujlaky or her two dogs, Hershey and Frosty, knew what to make of it. Figuring chances were better that it was a porcupine or confused beaver, Ross called Bacsujlaky and quizzed her about the encounter. Sure enough, Ross found where Bacsujlaky had run into the rodent and he and fellow naturalist Mike Taras, an education specialist at the Department of Fish and Game, tracked it 300 yards through the snow almost to the edge of College Road in front of the Department of Fish and Game offices. The rodent appeared to be getting plenty to eat, reported Ross. It was Taras who actually found the animal hunkered down in the snow. As was the case with Bacsujlaky, the rodent surprised Taras by rearing up and baring its teeth.

Try... by Miki Collins As folks living in the rural areas of the snowbelt states know all too well, automobile travel can be downright impossible at times during the winter months . . . when snow-packed and - drifted roads tend to be the rule rather than the exception. Here in the bush country of Alaska, however, my sister Julie and I welcome heavy snowfalls. Once a good, thick, white blanket covers the ground, you see, we can hitch up our sled dogs and begin another season of canine-powered cross-country skiing! Skijoring, or skiing with the help of a pulling dog, combines some of the speed and the excitement of alpine schussing (downhill skiing) with the wide range of travel that's possible in ski touring. It's a fast and practical way to get about, too. When skijoring on an open trail—towed by two or three dogs—I can easily cover over 40 miles a day . . . a fact which allows me to enjoy the sport while running a trapline, toting groceries out to our isolated homestead, or just exploring the countryside.

What is Skijoring?
Skijoring is a new and fast growing sport ! It combines cross-country skiing and dog mushing. Skijoring literally means ski-driving in Norwegian, as this sport originated in Scandinavia. Skijoring allows both dog and owner to exercise together as a team as you glide across the snow enjoying the great outdoors.
Why go Skijoring?
Great canine fitness training for your dog during the winter, as well as for yourself. Perfect way for both of you to stay healthy, fit and get lots of fresh air ! Keep your agility dog in top shape, and keep your dog's mind active learning new things. Just have FUN.
Your Dog will Love it
Most dogs just love to skijor. They enjoy the exercise, getting to meet other dogs and people, the outdoor scents, and being with their owners. Why just walk your dog if you can learn to skijor.
Breed of Dog Used
Any breed of dog that is at least 14 kg. (30 lbs.) and loves to run can learn to skijor. They must be in good health. Younger dogs that are still growing can still learn to skijor, but you should check with your vet regarding the amount of exercise your breed of dog should have.

Archived Story Doggie skijoring pulls into West Glacier
By MICHAEL JAMISON of the Missoulian WEST GLACIER - If your pooch can pull, and if you can stand stable on skinny skis, then the race is on up in West Glacier.
And if not, well, then come on by anyway, because there are sure to be some pretty good crashes at the first annual Doggie Skijoring Race, Jan. 19, at the Glacier Outdoor Center.
Skijoring is an age-old Scandinavian sport, where a human on skis is pulled by an animal, or team of animals.
Doggie skijoring, then, is just what it says it is - a skier in tow behind his or her hound - not as fast as equestrian skijoring but much, much saner. Usually.
Depends, really, on how many dogs you hook up.

013. Skijoring equipment
Skijoring really only requires six simple components. A skier (you!), a dog (or dogs!), an x-back harness, a tow line, padded belt, and cross country skis. You MUST know how to cross country ski VERY well to do this. The harness has been discussed previously, there is no need to discuss the skis, and the tow line is just that a line that connects you to the dog(s). This leaves the padded belt. These can be purchased or made. The idea is that you put the belt on, attach the tow line to it, attach the dogs to it, and go! Some people prefer to use a handle to hang on to rather than attach the dogs to them. The handle can then be dropped if the dogs pull you into trouble! Others feel that it is best to use a belt and execute a controlled fall in case of trouble rather than risk having the dogs injure themselves in a tangle when a handle is dropped. Carol Kaynor adds that the use of a shock cord (aka bungee cord) is recommended in the skijoring line. It is an important enhancement over a regular towline and is easier on both the dog's back and the skier's back. Also recommended is a quick-release system of some sort between the belt and the line, for safety's sake. In Fairbanks, a "quick point of detachment" is actually written into the race rules for skijoring.

Skijoring.....kinda sorta
When the SKOAC Renegade Racing team trained up in Mora last weekend, we had Rookie the Wonder Dog accompany us on the Memorial Trail loop. Yesterday I figured if he could run the trails he might as well be dragging me behind him. Skijoring is a kind of cross between sled dog running and cross country skiing. I dug out an old skijoring harness from a previous mutt, hooked the boy up, and headed for the 4k golf course loop. The only problem was what sort of line I might use to hook me to the dog. Being a guy who likes multipurpose gear and hates buying a piece of equipment that can only do one thing, I figured my Lotus Designs towing rig from my kayaking pfd should do the trick. It has a nice wide belt, a quick release buckle, and a sturdy carbiner. If I can tow another kayak with it, Rookie should certainly be able to tow me. My skijoring theory was that if the VoiceOfReason was skiing ahead The Rook would trot along and follow her. This theory worked well about 50% of the time. We humans with our exceedingly poor sense of smell just don't realize the olfactory pleasures that lie at the base of nearly every tree and fencepost, especially in public areas.
Other breaks of course, had to be taken when nature called. The whole skijoring concept seemed to work OK however, at least well enough so I'll try it again. The poor guy was so tired and mildly traumatized when I stuck him in the car after the 4k loop, that he didn't even do his usual whining and complaining. He just laid down with a somewhat quizzical look on his face as if he was saying, "I don't know what the heck that was but it seemed kinda fun; how did I do?". I plan on getting him out again to get both of us a bit better shape. The goal will be to see if we can go straight down the trail at least 60% of the time next time out. Gotta do this in little chunks I guess.
