CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING Skijoring with Your Dog: A Fun Working Partnership! by Julie West Besides having an enthusiastic dog who will obey commands and some cross-country skiing skills, you need a minimum of equipment to start skijoring. A hip belt or harness, shock cord towline and dog harness are three basic things needed to get started. For $100-$200 you can get set up for one or two dogs. There are several online resources available and some will even custom fit the dog harness which is desirable. Or you and your dog can visit Denise Erenstone in Lake Placid (adirondackskidog.com), who has a wide range of equipment and can help you with a custom fit, supplies and advice. Skijoring Resources

Fort Collins, CO Skijoring with horses usually involves two people and one horse. One person rides the horse while the skier is towed behind. The rider determines the pace and route for the skijoring adventure, while the skier attempts to hold on. Skijoring involves towing a skier behind horses or dogs. In addition to being a rapid way to get around, it is also a competitive winter sport in some parts of the United States, particularly the Northwest and Midwest. Especially with horses, skijoring is sometimes classified as an extreme sport because of the high rate of speed and potential danger involved. Skijoring is also a great deal of fun when carried out safely. Some horse skijoring competitions integrate jumps and extreme skiing maneuvers in addition to conventional skijoring. Horses used for skijoring tend to be extremely agile and quick, and breeds such as the American Quarterhorse are favored for the sport. Currently, the sport of equestrian skijoring has become a highly specialized competitive sport, where competitors must navigate a course of jumps, gates and sometime spear rings.

HOUGHTON The U.S. National Nordic Skiing championships recently drew many of the country’s best skiers to Houghton. On Saturday, Jan. 20, local residents have their own chance to race at the Michigan Tech Trails in the Keweenaw Land Trust’s (KLT) second annual TalviTohinat Nordic ski race. TalviTohinat , Finnish for a "Winter Scramble," is a community fitness event open to all: 10 and 5 km cross-country ski races, a 2.5 km youth race and new this year the only organized skijoring race in the Keweenaw. Skijoring is a unique event in which one or more dogs pull each skier. "Imagine dog sledding without the sled," said KLT President Erik Lilleskov. Skijoring
Back to Clubs Skijoring is Norwegian for ski driving and dates back to the gold rush days in Scandinavian countries. It was also practiced in the United States before the automobile became popular, but there they used horses instead of dogs. In Scandinavia, Skijoring is used as a training technique for Nordic-style mushing which combines one dog or more, a pulk (a small sled) and a skier. Although Nordic-style mushing competitions have been held in Norway since 1932, it wasn't until the 1980s that Skijoring caught on in North America. Today in Canada, there are competitive Skijoring races held in conjunction with dog sled races, and recreational Skijoring is also gaining popularity. Although Nordic dogs were originally used, any dog over 30 pounds that likes to pull can learn Skijoring. Basically, Skijoring combines one or two dogs in harness with a line that connects the skier to the dog(s). The most common harness is the X-back racing style harness and the skijoring line is usually about nine to eleven feet in length. The line can also have a portion of bungie cord incorporated to absorb some of the shock from starts and stops. The line runs from the dog's harness to a waist belt that sits either just below the skier's waist or on the hips. Depending on where the skijoring is taking place, the skis used may be either touring skis, skating skis or a shorter lighter ski. Skijoring is a great way to get the feel of dog sledding and, if you've always wanted to try it but didn't have enough dogs or a sled to pull, then this is a sport that is definitely worth a try. Skijoring is also an excellent way to train a lead dog, as there is nothing but a line between you and your dog making it easier to make corrections. Whether your intentions are competitive or recreational, Skijoring is a great way to get out and enjoy some time with your dog(s) doing what they love to do, running and pulling!

It involves a horse or from one to three dogs hitched directly to a human being on skis . Skijoring can also take place behind a snowmobile or an all terrain carrier such as the Bandvagn 206 . In this case, several skiers or soldiers can be towed on the same rope. The rope is passed around the skiers skipoles and continues to the next person in line. Skiers then preferably hang on to their skipoles, supported by their arms. Straddling the rope, and "sitting" on the skipoles as shown on the "Skijoring in Norway" link is not advisable, since this means you can't easily let go of the rope in case of a fall. Skijor Racing While skijoring behind a dog or horse, the person wears a wide waistband with a clip for attaching a lead, which is attached to the harness worn by the dog. Special quick-release hitches or hooks are available, used so that the skijorer may unhook the dog's lead rapidly. The dog provides extra power to the skier, who uses either a classic cross-country technique, or the faster skate skiing technique. Unlike regular cross-country skiing, the skis are hot waxed from tip to tail, to avoid slowing the dog team down. Any dog over the age of one year, and in general good health, can pull a skijorer. The classic northern breeds, such as

    Introduction
Skijoring is a cross between dog sledding and cross country skiing. A dog pulls a skier, who, depending on the terrain, either skis along or brakes. Any dog over 30 lbs can skijor, but it may be hard to find a proper harness for a dog less than 40 lbs. Thick fur and ice resistant pads are important, especially when bushwhacking. RuffWear makes a nice set of paw covers for longer runs or dogs without snow-pads. Skijoring is our dog's idea of paradise (though she's now middle-aged, and prefers cruising to working). I've created this web page to provide a resource for would be skijorers. Send me information on places to skijor, and other information of skijoring interest, and I'll post it here. Wherever you go, remember to keep your path clean. On a marginally related note, I should like to make a plea for old-style cross country skiing. This requires single track, machine-free, narrow trails that thread their way through forest and hills. Equipment is simple, skis are relatively wide, waxing is elementary, and clothing is eclectic. Snow shoes, dogs, and children are welcome they help pack the deep powder. This is the skiing I fell in love with twenty years ago. I find the mercilessly groomed double tracked (skate and classic) freeway sized trails of today sterile and repulsive. (end of rant!)
