WHAT IS SKIJORING?
Main Entry: ski jor ing
Pronunciation: 'skE-"jor-i[ng], (")skE-'
Function: noun
Etymology: modification of Norwegian skikj¸ring, from ski kj¸ring driving
a winter sport in which a person wearing skis is drawn over snow or ice (as by a horse or vehicle)
The sport of skijoring began several hundred years ago in Scandinavian countries as a way to travel during the long winters. Laplander's skied on Nordic skis holding the reins attached to reindeer. In the mid 1950's, skijoring found its way to North America, where ranchers attached a long rope to the saddle horn of a horse that was ridden at high speeds down a long straight-away. Currently, the sport of equestrian skijoring has become a highly specialized competitive sport, where competitors must navigate a course of jumps, gates and sometime spear rings. Competitive skijoring competitions are currently taking place in over 5 states in the USA, and in several countries worldwide. In some parts of the world, skiers are pulled behind dogs, mules and snowmobiles. Whatever the means, the sport of skijoring is growing rapidly, and is just as much fun for spectators as it is for competitors.

Ski Joring in Montana
What is Ski Joring? What You'll Need Where to go in Montana What is Ski Joring? If you're a ski joring enthusiast from way back, you can probably skip this section. But chances are, you're scratching your head in wonder right now, trying to figure out what ski joring is. The easiest way to explain it is: it's a cross between dog sledding and cross country skiing. Or, it's a cross between sleigh riding and cross country skiing. Depending on which animal you prefer, it involves having a dog or horse pull you on cross country skis. (You're on the skis, not the dog or horse.) This activity, like just about any activity involving cross country skis, traces its roots to Scandinavian heritage. But it's gaining popularity in the U.S., with a growing list of clubs and organized competitions such as the National Finals Ski Joring Races in Red Lodge, Montana each March.

Ski Joring at Winter Carnival in Whitefish, Montana The Whitefish Winter Carnival has been one of the longest running annual winter events in the nation. Starting in the early fifties the Winter Carnival has had many events that has been a tradition and has carried on through the years. Ski Joring was one of those traditional events. Due to insurance issues and lack of financial help, Ski Joring was dropped from the list of carnival events.
NOW! Through the help of some old time Whitefish residents, the Whitefish Winter Carnival Committee, and sponsorship from local and national companies and organizations, we may start a new tradition that will draw Ski Joring enthusiasts from throughout the West. We need your help! With the development of the North American Ski Joring Association you have given us an avenue to achieve a first class Ski Joring event. We would like to be included in the association and be put on the Ski Joring schedule for this year. The Whitefish Winter Carnival builds for three weeks and culminates with a huge parade, ski events and games. We hope that this will be a new tradition in Whitefish and a yearly event for the North American Ski Joring Assn. Schedule under Map below FRIDAY, Feb. 7th, 2003

It’s that time again… THE NATIONAL FINALS SKI-JORING RACES take place, March 7th, 8th and 9th, 2008 in Red Lodge. It’s WINTER FUN…WESTERN STYLE , and we’re hoping that you will join us! WHAT IS SKI-JORING? Originating in the Scandinavian countries as a form of winter transportation. The west has transformed this into an action packed competition wherein teams of horse, rider and skier negotiate a 700+ foot course, the horse and rider taking a track to the inside of the course while the skier in tow, negotiates the 20-some slalom gates and four jumps in hopes of completing two fast, clean runs. That isn’t so easy at speeds sometimes topping 25 mph. Awards go to the fastest combined times for the two day event as well as fastest times each day. There is a separate “longest jump” competition wherein the rider and horse pull their skier over one jump for the longest distance each day. Distances have exceeded 60 feet. Competition starts at 12:00 PM each day and takes place at The Home of Champions Rodeo Grounds, west of Red Lodge on State Highway 78. Come join us for Montana's own form of March Madness! Ski J¶ring
Ski-Joring is a hybrid sport that is still reliatively new in the public eye. Combining dog sledding with skiing, ski-joring originated in Scandinavia and has gained popularity in racing circuits, as well as, recreational circuits around the world. It was introduced as a demonstration sport at the 'Lake Placid Winter Olympics'. Mad Dogs and Englishmen is a ski-jor racing kennel training a number of dogs for competitive racing. As the sport is growing in popularity, so to does the racing circuit with the addition of a ski-joring class being added to a number of pre-existing dog sled race venues.
Today, recreational ski-joring is becoming more and more popular and is ideally suited to the long Alberta winters. Your family K-9 companion can be quite easly accomodated, all you need is a little know how.

Welcome to skijoring in Trapper Creek, home of some of the finest snow conditions in Alaska. This area has long been a favorite spot for many winter sporting activities, and I strive to offer unique opportunities for novice and experienced skijoring enthusiasts. These outings will take you to an area with magnificent views of Mt.McKinley, across a landscape easily traversed by any skiier. The dogs are Alaskan racing sled dogs. They have been individually skijor trained by me, Trapper Creek Librarian, Patty Christensen. Skijoring can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Adding a dog to your skiing adventure can allow you to travel greater distances in less time. I do, however, recommend you have some cross country skiing experience before you try skijoring. Come and enjoy one of the most invigorating of winter sports .I will accompany you on a pleasurable outing you won't forget, or set you up for your own adventure. Your experience can include a magical Alaskan full moon, or Northern Lights viewing, nighttime skijor, if the timing is right. These skijoring opportunities are available throughout our snow season as conditions permit. The optimal season is late February through early April.

Falling is fun. At least when it involves being leashed to two gorgeous Alaskan huskies that pull you along a trail of freshly groomed snow that’s edged with white spruce, balsam and white birch. When Ely and Dart make the turn I’ve seen coming, have even been preparing for, I find myself unable to complete it with a trace of grace and instead fall on my butt. Didn’t bother to snowplow; I just fell. And it is surprisingly, breathlessly exhilarating, unlike anything I’ve ever experienced and a thousand times better than an amusement-park ride.
“It” is skijoring, from the Norwegian word for “ski driving,” a blend of cross-country skiing and dog sledding believed to have been created by enterprising—that’s right, not lazy—Scandinavians who hitched their skis first to horses as a means of faster transport. Today, it’s a winter sport that’s growing in popularity, with races locally in Merrill Medford , and Land O’Lakes.

There is little doubt that some dogs just love to pull. They like to be out it front and they aren't the least bothered by putting quite a bit of effort into it. One of the things I liked about getting involved in dog sports was seeing that some dogs, like some people, really enjoy achieving difficult things. My Tanith loved to pull me. And often she would jump in the water and retrieve things that were both heavy and awkward. A few times she managed to find things to drag in that were too heavy for her to manage once she got them to shore. I once had her evaluated by a sports vet who commented on the excellent condition of her muscles due to pulling. Now if you are looking for how to stop your dog from pulling try the book My Dog Pulls. What Do I Do? by Turid Rugaas. One benefit of pulling is that the development of the muscles can often reduce the risks of increased deterioration in dogs with hip dysplasia. When the muscles are well developed they provide support and cushioning. Another benefit of pulling activites is just the additional time engaged with the dog. Roller blading, bikejoring, and dog scootering are good ways for dog and human to exercise together at a pace both enjoy. When dogs are well exercised they are less bored and less likely to have behavior problems. While there are differences between these activities, sites that have information on one often cover the others.

A B ARK I N T HE P ARK Skijoring
Derived from the Norwegian word for "ski-driving", skijoring is the perfect sport for the cross-country ski enthusiast with one or two dogs. The skier is outfitted with a skijoring belt, which hooks to a quick-release line which is attached to an X-back harness on the dog. The skijoring line has an internal bungee at one end which absorbs the shock when you are starting out, or if you fall. Regular track skis are good for beginners, and more experienced skijorers use skate skis for speed or back country skis for off-trail work. The key to skijoring is a well-trained dog, as the faster the skier can ski, the faster the human-dog duo can fly. We've heard of people who have skijored behind teams of eight or more dogs, but no one in the club has been tempted to try this yet. Please see our links section for more on the world of skijoring. Kick Sledding
Hitch one or two dogs behind a light-weight, Finnish-made kick sled and go faster by pushing the sled along with your feet. The kick sled was originally meant for human power alone, but the folks at Canvasback Pet Supplies modified one a few years ago for dog power, and the idea has really caught on with mushers who only have one or two pets. The kick sled line has an internal bungee to absorb shock, and a bridle which attaches it to the sled. Owners of larger dogs often prefer this over ski-joring, as it gives them more stability when turning. Our kick sledders tend to use a weight-pull harness for a single dog, and switch to X-back harnesses for teams of two or more.

The growing sport of skijoring is cross-country skiing while being pulled by a dog or dogs. "Skijoring" comes from a Norwegian word that means "ski-driving." The DNR allows skijoring on non-designated cross country ski trails and anywhere off-trail as long as the property allows dogs. See the list of properties that prohibit dogs . Skijoring is not allowed on designated cross-country ski trails or nature trails. Trails are considered "designated" if the use is indicated on maps and/or with a trailhead sign. Ski Tips
Cross country skis come in two basic types - classic and skate . Skijor racing requires speed and skate skis on a prepared track are fastest. When skiing over partially groomed terrain or non-groomed terrain, the classic 'backcountry' ski is recommended. Metal edges are forbidden in races but if the edge is properly sharpened and maintained it will not cut flesh. Edges provide stopping control and the construction of the ski is much tougher. Backcountry skis have greater surface area allowing better floatation in deeper snow.
Check with ski clubs in your area for more information. Most clubs hold classes for beginners throughout the winter season. Good cross country skiing requires a lot of practice, patience and energy.
