History of Shootfighting.
The origin of current shoot-style wrestling can arguably be traced back to April 10, 1984, when a group of professional wrestlers, led by Akira Maeda, formed the Japanese group UWF. A couple of months after that, Satoru Sayama, who had already gained an immense success as the original Tiger Mask in New Japan Pro Wrestling, and Kazuo Yamazaki joined UWF. With the later arrival Yoshiaki Fujiwara and Nobuhiko Takada, the group moved from professional wrestling into a stiffer, stronger style. The outcomes of the matches were predetermined, but the bruises and submissions were real. The second incarnation of UWF started on November 27, 1987, when Akira Maeda (once again) intentionally kicked wrestler Riki Choshu in the face, breaking three bones. Maeda was suspended, and then fired in March of 1988. In April, Maeda, Takada, Yamazaki and others formed the new UWF. The group began to thrive with the addition of wrestlers Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki in April of 1989. The UWF's peak came with their show "Atlantis" at Tokyo Dome on October 25, 1990, a show that pitted Akira Maeda v. Masakatsu Funaki, Nobuhiko Takada v. Yoshiaki Fujiwara, and featured wrestlers Yoji Anjoh, Naoki Sano, and American Wayne Shamrock. On December 1st, 1990, UWF president Shinji Jin fired all of the wrestlers after a show in Nagano, Japan, and disbanded the promotion.

from www.shootersshootfighting.com Shootfighting might be the most all round martial art the world has ever seen. The best styles of the world have contributed with their specialties. Stand up fight from muay thai, clinch and take downs from judo and Wrestling and from sambo and ju-jutsu the ground fight. Stand up fight and ground fight is equally emphasized. There is always something new to learn as a result of the versatility. Since you can specialize on the training that suits you, it never becomes boring. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, among other styles, has during the recent years showed the importance of well working skills in grappling. However, the stand up fight can not be left in the background. Shootfighting is the style that combines stand up fight, clinch and ground fight the best. It has become a success. Fighters who train according to the shootfighting concept dominates within the NHB. Here you can find fighters as Bas Rutten, Frank Shamrock, Randy Couture, Maurice Smith and others.

Shooto is definitly a effective system to study, there are a number of different Shooto schools available as well. The only problem that I have heard about Shooto is basically they promote finishes over position in there ground fighting and it is a little different at every school depending on who taught the instructor and where he learned it. Think of Shooto as San Shou, it is more a format open to interpretation by different schools. Still in a street situation a Shooto guy would basically clean house as all there training is basically live and aggressive.-ED

SHOOTFIGHTING Shootfighting is a hybrid of submission, grappling and Thai Kickboxing. The martial art/sport of shootfighting is a recent creation. It has its genesis less than 25 years ago when a famous German wrestler taught the art of real wrestling, or "shooting", to a group of top Japanese martial artists. The wrestling they learned bore only a superficial resemblance to today's professional wrestling.
Official matches have been held for almost 10 years and the sport's popularity has grown. It is now the third most popular spectator sport in Japan behind baseball and sumo. There are currently three main organizations sanctioning matches and teaching the style. Of these, the oldest and largest is the Fujiwara Gumi (family) run by founder and former champion Yoshiaki Fujiwara. The current world champion of the Fujiwara Gumi is Miami's Bart Vale, the first non- Japanese to reach the higher levels of the sport. Vale, who coined the term shootfighting to describe the style, combined the wrestling and Muay Thai techniques he learned in Japan with his experience in American karate and kick boxing to advance the sport even further. He is presently attempting to promote the sport through his Miami shootfighting school and by holding regular matches in Florida and California.

The Art Of Shootfighting
Although it can be a very provocative martial art, Shootfighting is still one of the most popular martial arts styles in the world.  The art of Shootfighting is very old, originating from Japan as a way of self defense.  Even though it is great to use for self defense purposes, this martial art is more popular as a ring sport in competitions such as the Vale Tudo and the professional Shootfighting leagues found throughout Japan.
In Japan Shootfighting is a sport that is very popular.  The bouts take place in a ring that is similar to wrestling, ropes and all intact.  There are normally rounds, as well as a referee who is there to call the bout and stop it if need be.  Fighters will wear gloves and go at it full contact.  Submission and grappling is legal as well, which makes the fights more interesting.  Fighters can test their skills in Shootfighting against some of the best Japan has to offer with these bouts.
Shootfighting is popular in the United States as well, although it is more popular throughout Japan.  There are American fighters such as Ken Shamrock and Bart Vale who are experts in Shootfighting and travel to Japan on a frequent basis to compete in tournaments and bouts.  The atmosphere in Japan is very high, as they show a lot of passion and desire for the matches over there.

Of all the arts I’ve learnt (and I’ve learnt over 16 martial arts) Jujutsu has remained my favorite.  That’s because in jujutsu even the attacker’s (Uke) strength is objectified. It can be used as an external weapon just as you would use a glass bottle in the vicinity! Jujutsu concentrates on building internal strength, the strength of the muscles that form your abdominal cavity and thoracic cavity. This strength when supported by the legs forms a formidable pivot simply called your centre.
