A Brief Introduction to the Scottish Sport of Shinty
What's older than kilts? Shinty!
Shinty (iomain or camanachd in Scottish Gaelic) is a team sport of the stick and ball variety that has been played in the Scottish Highlands for many generations. Shinty's origins date back nearly 2,000 years, and it can claim hurling as a cousin, and hockey and golf as descendants. Why haven't I heard of Shinty before?
The Shinty season has traditionally run from Fall to Spring (though this is changing in 2004) and so most folks who visit during summer vacation do not have an opportunity to see the game being played. It is also true that Shinty is not played in all parts of Scotland. The game has close ties with the Gaelic culture and has generally flourished in the Gaidhealtachd. A great many teams can be found in close proximity to the Great Glen, between Inverness and Fort William, though teams also exist in other locales, including Skye and Edinburgh. A brief overview of the rules
Two teams (usually of six or twelve players a side) play on a field of similar proportions and size to a soccer pitch. The players use Camans (hooked/curved sticks with a triangular cross section) to strike the shinty ball, either in the air or on the ground, with the intention of scoring a goal. As in soccer, a goalkeeper guards the goal nets, which measure 12 feet across and 10 feet high. A shinty match is either 30 minutes (for six-a-side) or 90 minutes (for twelve-a-side) in length, divided into two halves with a short break between. A referee regulates play, enforcing rules and calling fouls for illegal and/or dangerous play. There are also side judges and goal judges to assist in calling side-outs, end-outs and goals.

Shinty back for a fixture with the future
Sunday Herald, The Jan 30, 2000 by Shinty WITH the annual winter break at an end, the nation's shinty players look forward to picking up their camans in earnest again on Saturday. Perhaps the eight-week closedown was overlong, but on the shutdown Saturdays nothing like a full fixture list could have been completed anyway. The prediction of John Willie Campbell, fixture supremo of the Camanachd Association, was eerily accurate - he had suggested the closedown weeks on the basis of statistics amassed during a lifetime in the game.

: If someone is at sixes and sevens then they are in a quandary; they don't quite know what to do next. The saying originates from a situation in 1327 and relates to the Guilds of Tradesmen in the City of London. The Merchant Taylors and the Skinners were founded within a few days of each other, five other Guilds having already received their charters. The age of each Guild dictated its position in the Lord Mayor's procession. The Merchant Taylors and the Skinners argued for fifty years as to which should go sixth in the procession. In the end, in 1494, Sir Robert Billesden, the current Lord Mayor, decreed that they should take it in turns to go sixth and seventh.

A game deeply rooted in history, it is still a thriving sport today with some 35 teams affiliated to the Shinty Association and competing regularly. However, it is the 2 villages of that are, perhaps, the names most associated with success. Newtonmore have won a total of 28 Championships since their foundation back in 1877 but Kingussie have been the more successful of the two teams over the last 20 years or so. Shinty / Hurling - What is the point?
“It may be a hybrid sport with compromise rules : perhaps purists don’t like it ,but shinty needs this international dimension. From the reactions of the GAA officials, so does hurling.” That was the verdict of former President of the Camanachd Association, Donnie Grant after last weekend’s Celtic Club Champions Challenge matches. For the record, Premier League champions Kingussie suffered a rare defeat losing out 14-19 to Tipperary side Kildangan, hurling’s top intermediate side while Lochaber, National League Division 1 Champions, clinched a Scottish win by defeating Kilkenny side, Galmoy 17-14. With this Club Championship series due to be pencilled in to the shinty fixtures calendar for the next two years it is worth asking what does the shinty world get out of this compromise sport ?
There is no doubt that shinty/hurling contests are competitive affairs- any game which features scoring in double figures for both sides is not to be ignored. It was unfortunate for Kingussie that they found themselves facing Irish opponents a week before they were due to meet Newtonmore in a Camanachd Cup replay which they need to win if they are not going to miss out on shinty’s top prize for the second year in a row. They rested several key players and perhaps did not engage in the physical contest with the intensity such a fixture demanded - and against Irish sides which are generally faster that was enough to tip the balance. Lochaber however ,with nothing to lose and having struggled in shinty’s top division this season ,approached their match in a different frame of mind and reaped the reward on the field.

sportscotland funding for Caberfeidh Shinty Club
Body Text Tuesday 3 July 2007 Caberfeidh Shinty Club in Strathpeffer, one of the oldest shinty clubs in Scotland, is set to receive a sport scotland Lottery award of £100,000 to assist in the construction of a new pavilion. The award, from sport scotland’s Building for Sport programme will help the club develop the game of shinty within Ross and Cromarty by providing coaching to young people up to district and national standard as well enabling the club to host league games and competitions. The new building, located at Castle Leod playing fields in Strathpeffer, will include changing facilities, meeting rooms, a fitness area and storage. It will replace the existing pavilion which is completely inadequate for the club’s activities as it has no running water or electricity. The pavilion will also be used by Strathpeffer Highland Games Committee, which was formed in 1882, for their events and to storage of their equipment. The club has been established since 1886 and celebrated its centenary in 1986. It currently has two senior teams, one which plays in the Marine Harvest North Division One and the other in the North Division Two league as well as teams within all age groups of the Camanachd Association’s youth competitions and club members are actively engaged in the coaching of these youngsters. The ‘Cabers’, as they are known locally, have over 100 members and hope that the new pavilion will encourage more young people to join the club boosting their membership and seeing them continue to thrive for many years to come.
