The game of shinty or camanachd as it is known in the Gaidhealtachd or Gaelic speaking lands, is an ancient game. It is thought to have been introduced to Scotland along with the Gaelic language by Irish/Celtic immigrants some two thousand years ago or brought here by Irish missionaries in 6AD. Shinty enthusiasts even claim that golf was derived from shinty players practising driving the ball with the caman, the curved stick used in the game. Tiger Woods might be surprised at this claim but he would undoubtedly play a mean shinty game! You can see this ancient Highland sport for yourself most Saturday afternoons at the Inverness Shinty Club, Bught Park, during March-September.

It's a very physical sport that can be enjoyed at all levels. The game is at a great point right now with expansion through youth development which has been going for the last couple of years". The 2004 season saw the association taking a big step by changing the season, starting from March until November. This pilot intended to benefit both players and spectators, and it is hoped will further improve the experience. "We hope with the season now running from spring through to autumn to encourage more visitors to the Highlands to come and watch this very exciting sport. Having a summer season has also been continued for 2005.

Welcome to the University of Strathclyde Shinty Club! Strathclyde do the Double! After their fantastic success in the university league this year, Strathclyde went into the Littlejohn Vase brimming with confidence that they could triumph over all other uni's for a second time this year. And they weren't disappointed. After a tough game versus St Andrews and a goalless draw against Glasgow in the group stages, Strathclyde proceeded to record a win over Dundee, the only team to have beaten them this year, in the semi-finals. A convincing 4-0 mauling over Robert Gordon's University in the final ensured that there would only be the name "Strathclyde" on the trophy this year. A full report of the day (every last detail you'll be pleased to hear) is found here © University of Strathclyde Shinty Club 2004
