Samuel "Sambo" Mockbee dedicated his life, as a teacher and as an architect, to the goal of providing "shelter for the soul". His inspirational and authentic architecture served to improve the lives of the most impoverished residents of rural Alabama through his work at Auburn University's Rural Studio. Mockbee was so committed to this pure act of service that, in 1991, he abandoned a full time architectural practice with Coleman Coker and the firm Mockbee Coker Architects to accept a position at Auburn's School of Architecture. It was there that he and long time friend and Auburn professor D.K. Ruth conceived of and founded the Rural Studio concept. In 1995 Princeton Architectural Press published Mockbee Coker:Thought and Process, a monograph recognition of their important, but unusual body of work. The book documented the manner in which Mockbee Coker challenged the preconceptions and definitions of the normative process of creating architecture. It was during this time that Mockbee began to bring into focus a personal understanding and recognition of the social, economic, and cultural inconsistencies that existed in the late Twentieth Century South. That collected knowledge, coupled with the existing cultural heritage of mystery and mysticism of the region, became a framing device which established both boundaries and opportunities for his work. Newell Bohnett decided to combine their talent and experience in order to develop a profitable restaurant business with unlimited potential. The year was 1957 and the birthplace of the then sleeping tiger was picturesque Santa Barbara on the coast of Southern California. Shortly thereafter the partners revived the legend of the little boy and the tiger, who have been growing larger and larger dinning on pancakes floating in rare maple and boysenberry syrups, dripping with golden tiger butter. The company still uses the little boy, his parents Mumbo and Jumbo and the tiger for identification of menu items and promotional purposes. Now a restaurant with a name like Sambo's cant possibly survive. Not only the name was a "stumbling block" the design of the interior became an issue. Above the counters were reliefs of the story of lil black Sambo and how he turned a tiger into butter. The reliefs were changed thru the years and Sambo's complexion became noticeably lighter. Oh well... the name had to go. There was an attempt to reinvent the chain in the mid-eighties with a new name and a new image. The chain became "FAMILY SAMS" with Sam the bald eagle as its mascot. The concept failed miserably. In the era of Regan family values this over-patriotic family restaurant reinvented itself into oblivion. These things happen. Most of the restaurants became BAKERS SQUARE then SEASONS then whomever could afford this accursed building.

Thursday, January 24, 2008 Has it Been a week already Time just flies by, one week I'm skiing in Aspen, the next i'm back at work. The good news from the ski trip is that my dad was able to get back out the last two days and ski. He is still hobbling around a bit, but that might just be old age. The last two days on the mountain were cold and dreary. The light was very flat and the skiing wasn't as much fun...but it was skiing so it was better than working. Thursday night we went down to Carbondale and hung out with Taz at her work. Very nice place, lots of fancy bikes. She seems to be enjoying the CO lifestyle. The only downside of the trip was that our flight was canceled on Sat due to the threat of snow....IN ATLANTA!!! I didn't see that coming. We were scheduled on a 1:30 pm flight and they re-scheduled us on a 12:45 am flight. We didn't find out until we were already up and dressed Saturday morning. We decided we would head into boulder to check it out. I called Jim and he invited us over to his house. Jim gave us the grand tour of boulder, we hung out with Trisha and the kids in the afternoon, then we hit the local mall for a little shopping and a movie. Big thumbs up for JUNO.
