By adjusting the rigging rudder and dagger or centre board, a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails (main and/or jib) in order to change the direction and speed of a boat. Mastery of the skill requires experience in varying wind and sea conditions , as well as knowledge concerning sailboats . Today most people enjoy sailing as a recreational activity. Recreational sailing can be further divided into racing cruising and "daysailing" or dinghy sailing Throughout history sailing has been instrumental in the development of civilization. The earliest representation of a ship under sail appears on an Egyptian vase from about 3500 BC. Advances in sailing technology from the 15th century onward enabled European explorers in Canada to make longer voyages into regions with extreme weather and climatic conditions. Improvements were made in the design of sails, masts and rigging, and navigational equipment became more sophisticated. Ships went further north, stayed longer on the Grand Banks and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence

Welcome to SAILING Magazine
SAILING is a national magazine that is set apart from its competition by its oversize pages and fresh, honest reporting. The magazine is meant for sailors who, above all else, are interested in sailing, reading about it, and enjoying it through the many pictures and incisive text. While SAILING has a reputation as the big, beautiful one, once again it is set apart from its peers, by its many columns on design (from yacht designer Bob Perry), boat tests (largest boat tests done by U.S. magazines), elaborate monthly departments on gear and its fast-growing technology, on sailing technique, and on sailing news, as well as hard-hitting expressions of opinion by publisher-editor Bill Schanen and columnists Red Marston and Chris Caswell. Each issue brings you a wealth of information from every corner of the sport.

Tough Days in Key West
There's nothing like winter sailboat racing in North America. Thankfully. Despite attracting a roster of world-class sailors and boats Monday, the first day of racing brought a cold front with 30-plus knots of wind. Races were canceled. Tuesday saw winds in the teens, declining through the day. Still, rain squalls brought big shifts and race crews stayed busy trying to move marks to keep the courses true. Wednesday. No wind. Races were canceled again. (But if races need to be canceled, it might as well be on Mount Gay Rum Day. Probably better than Lewmar Day where you grind winches all day, I suppose. Or Sperry Top-sider Day where you walk around looking like... whatever). With only two days of racing left, it's going to be tough for great crews of great boats to come out on top. This year, almost 70% of the entries are racing in one-design classes. The Melges 24 class is the biggest, featuring 46 boats. There are 34 J/105's, and 25 Farr 40's sporting tacticians like Paul Cayard, Dean Barker, Brad Butterworth, Jeff Madrigali and more America’s Cup, Olympic and Volvo Ocean Race rockstars. Lots of talent, too much weather. Luckily, the Caribbean racing season is just around the corner. Consistent tradewinds, warm water, great boats. Short race names. Stay tuned.

on Day 3 at Acura Key West
Organizers and competitors alike have been frustrated by the fact winds have been either too strong or too light on two of the initial three days of the largest winter regatta in North America.
A northeasterly that held steady in the range of 25-30 knots forced cancellation of racing on Monday. Mother Nature delivered the opposite end of the spectrum on Wednesday with a southeasterly providing a mere three knots of pressure and forcing officials with Premiere Racing to abandon again.

    Online sailing navigation course
Navigation is something very important and you have to take it into consideration and prepare sufficiently prior to your going on a serious cruise. Despite the existence of precise GPS (Global Positioning Systems), complicated navigation computer programmes and other technical aids, we strongly recommend you to prepare good for the sailing. Let your mind be qualified enough to meet the challenges of the sea just like our dignified ancestors. If you want to prove that you are really independent, then you have to be independent from the technical gadgets and be able to find your way day and night even if your GPS or computer breaks down.
Navigation is generally divided into two branches - piloting and open-water. Piloting is the act of guiding a boat when the land is in sight; whereas open-water navigation is when you don't have any landmarks at all. There is one more type of navigation, and it is called celestial - for navigation at night.
You should not that there is magnetic variation - the forces of magnetism are not the same in all places.
