      edit Human running mechanics
Running is a complex, coordinated process that involves the entire body. Every human being runs differently, but certain general features of running motion are common.
      edit Lower body motion
Running is executed as a sequence of strides, which alternate between the two legs. Each leg's stride can be roughly divided into three phases: support, drive, and recovery. Support and drive occur when the foot is in contact with the ground. Recovery occurs when the foot is off the ground. Since only one foot is on the ground at a time in running, one leg is always in recovery, while the other goes through support and drive. Then, briefly, as the runner leaps through the air, both legs are in recovery. These phases are described in detail below.
      edit Support
During the support phase, the foot is in contact with the ground and supports the body against gravity. The body's

Pain in the Knee
This weekend I spoke to a few runners who are having knee problems. It's so common for runners, especially beginners, to have knee pain. But, in many cases, the problems can be remedied or easily prevented in the first place. Wearing the right running shoes and replacing your shoes at the right time (every 300-400 miles) can help you avoid knee issues. Running (Jogging)
    Author: Richard Weil, MEd, CDE
Medical Editor: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR "That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So, I ran to the end of the road, and when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason, I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured since I've gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going. When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go, you know, I went. My mama always said you got to put the past behind you before you can move on. And I think that's what my running was all about. I had run for three years, two months, 14 days, and 16 hours." That's from the movie Forrest Gump , when Forrest (played by Tom Hanks) runs in scene after scene after scene. The idea symbolized, among other things, the beginning of the running craze that spread across the country in the 1970s. Since then, running has captured the attention of millions of Americans. Thousands of road races and marathons occur each year, and running is the sixth most popular

      How to Begin Running
Get going! It is not as difficult as you might think to get started on a running program - even if you haven't been physically active. If you start off the right way, you will soon discover for yourself the mental and physical benefits of running. Here are some easy ways to ease into a routine.
      edit Steps
    • Plan to spend 20-30 minutes at a time three days each week. Space out the days to allow for recovery time between sessions. Anything more goes beyond fitness and into running for other purposes - something you may find yourself doing if bitten by the running bug. Obtain some good running shoes. Don't scrimp on price too much, but don't think you need a very expensive pair of ultra-runners at first. No beginning runner needs that kind of economic pressure on the road! If you're serious about this running thing, it's a good idea to have yourself fitted at a running store, as different shoes are designed for different types of feet. The right shoe for one person is the wrong shoe for another and will cause injury. A good running store can test you to make sure you get the right shoe (bring along a used pair so they can tell from the wear pattern as well). Your typical sporting goods store does not have the expertise to get you in the correct shoe. Stretch after a run . Be aware that although the benefits and/or drawbacks to this are controversial, there remains enough evidence to warrant some stretching at each workout. Stretch out each muscle group, holding each stretch for at least 15 seconds.
