Kronborg Slot (1)
  • On 6 September Christian commissioned the Danish architect Christian Bernekow with the building of a boldhuset at Kronborg castle in Elsinor ( Helsingor ). This castle was used by Shakespeare as the setting of his Hamlet . The construction of the tennis court was obviously completed by 18 March 1597, because on this date Bernekow was to proceed with his building activities for another royal tennis court: at Koldinghus castle.
Kronborg Slot
Koldinghus Slot (1)
  • Koldinghus castle’s tennis court was built at the same time as Christian’s boldhuset at Kronborg. It appears that the construction of this court had to be temporarily postponed when the castle partly burnt down in 1597. A record of 1610 shows that tennis was played at this court in 1610. Koldinghus castle went up in flames in 1808, during a siege by Napoleon Bonaparte. We do not know if Napoleon, a keen convert of tennis, was also to be blamed for the destruction of the royal tennis court.

Royal Tennis Court at Hampton Court Palace. Tennis was played on this site by Henry VIII from 1528. As a young, handsome, athletic man Henry was passionately addicted to sport, and particularly to tennis. Legend has it that he heard of the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn as he played tennis at Hampton Court Palace. During the 17th century various improvements were made to the court. One of the first acts of Charles II after his restoration in 1660 was to order the extensive refitting of the Tudor Tennis Court. Homepage Cont@ct us Advertise Privacy policy ...

royal tennis was actually very different than tennis we know today. The sport was actually very different than the version we know today.

History
Historic debut:
Tennis started in the early 1500 B.C. by the egyptians who practiced the sport as a sacred ritual. Throughout the years it was eventualy developped into a spiritual ceremony sport. Later during the VIII century, the concept of ball/racquet games quickly spread throughout Europe after an encounter between the christians in southern France and the Moors (an oriental religion which inherited the sport from egypt.
As the Christians were very interested in the Moors ways, they soon adapted the game which we now call tennis. The christians came out with the first official version of Tennis called "La Soule". In La Soule, players would hit a ball back and forth between each other with either their hands or a stick. This variation finally got released from the monateries in the late XII century. Players noticed that they could control the ball much easier if they used their hands but this did cause quite some pain so in consequence they developpe a leather glove to protect their hand. Later, this glove was attached to a stick and became the first tennis racquet in the world. The balls were also put under a lot changes throughout history; starting off as a wooden ball to a straw packed leather ball.
Real Tennis:
In the XVI to the XVII, Tennis, also know as "Jeu de Paume", became very popular amongst royalty in France. The game once again was renamed to Royal (or Real) Tennis because of the new found royal popularity. During this game, before serving one had to yell Tenez ( a french word meaning "hold") and through english entrepatation was then doubbed Tennis.

    Chronology
    History of the Game:
Since World War II tennis has generally become more egalitarian than it once was. In Australia by the 1930s tennis became that nation's most popular recreational sport and Australia went on to dominate tennis like no nation ever has, or most likely ever will. Following the 1950s and 1960s, the heyday of Australian mastery over the rest of the world, major tournaments that had once been open only to amateurs, in 1968 (beginning with Wimbledon) welcomed those players who had turned professional, ushering in the Open Era. This event had been anticipated since the early sixties, and the end of what has been dubbed "shamateurism" further fueled the tennis boom which had already begun by the 1960s.
