A ROYAL TENNIS COURT JK GILLON Edinburgh's Royal Tennis Court was in a covered building just outside the gates of Holyrood Palace. Royal or Real Tennis originated in France. It is considered the oldest and most difficult of all ball games and was a fashionable amusement in the 16th and 17th centuries in Scotland. It is much more elaborate than modern tennis. Play involves hitting a ball with racquets both over a net and against the walls of the court.
The Duke of Albany, later James VII of Scotland, was among the players in the Royal Tennis court. The Royal Tennis Court is also connected with early Scottish theatre. In the latter part of the 16th century, several theatrical companies performed in a temporary theatre at the Royal Tennis Court. In 1601, an English company of actors, headed by a Laurence Fletcher, 'comedian to his Majestie', appeared at the Royal Tennis Court. Among Fletcher's company was William Shakespeare. It is generally agreed that he visited Scotland at this time and sketched out a plan for Macbeth.
Members of the Royal Family, including the future Queen Anne, took part in some of the many plays. The last recorded theatrical presentation at the Royal Tennis Court was in 1714 when Macbeth was performed 'in the presence of a brilliant array of Scottish Nobles, after an archery competition'.

The origin of Tennis, like so many Sports and Games is something of a mystery with various theories having been espoused. One version would have us believe that Stone Age man once hit rocks backwards and forwards with clubs, perhaps. A more substantial beginning is that Tennis derived from Handball, a version of which was played in the ancient world including the civilisations of Rome, Greece and Egypt. There is an Egyptian town on the Nile called Tinnis (in Arabic) and some speculate that this is the origin of the name 'Tennis'. Another string to this theory's bow is that the term 'racquet' is thought to derive from the Arabic word 'rahat' which means 'the palm of the hand' By the 14th century, Tennis had found its way to England where both Henry VII and Henry VIII apparently became keen players and instigated the building of courts up and down the country. Apparently Henry VIII invented the 'service' - his servants used to throw the ball up in the air for him because he was too fat to do it himself. The Tennis racket by 1500 was no longer completely made of wood but consisted of a wooden handle with a sheep gut strung head. The Royal enthusiasm for the game continued both in France during the sixteenth century where there were apparently more than 1000 courts in Paris alone at that time and in England during the Tudor seventeenth century. Notable English royal players include George IV (1763-1830), Prince Albert (1819-1861) who owned a locker in the changing room at Hampton Court Palace which still bears his name, Edward VII (1842-1910) and George V (1866-1936). For unknown reasons, the game's popularity waned in France and England during the 17th century and in France it was virtually non-existent by 1800.

It involves squash fanatics playing Royal Tennis, Boston, SquashTalk, Kneipps, five fire engines, a shy yet gallant hero and a singed Ron Beck. Where to begin? www.tandr.org then click on Real Tennis In their defense neither of them really saw the intensity of the flames that nearly engulfed Ron, and both could see the sauna door from their position and despite the smoke building up, there were no visible flames or extremely obvious immediate danger. I screamed at both of them to leave and grabbed my squash bag and moved to the reception area. As I had just left the jacuzzi I was only clad in a towel and saw getting properly dressed as a pretty insignificant priority. We are sponsored by Asics We returned to the scene the following day. The club had fire notices posted and fire restoration vans were parked outside. The club was closed to members. One of the men in charge of the club let us look at the damage. It was surprising how little there was. The fire had been contained to just the sauna and the locker room had virtually no damage. We were thanked for stopping a fire that could have easily burnt the building down. I was hoping to get a picture of the scene, but considering how well the fire was contained and the job done by the clean up crew left a very anti-climatic scene. The club manager, Tom Dobbins, who was relieved we weren't hurt, said, "It's a good thing you guys were there. If you hadn't been in the locker room just then the whole club might have burned."

The Royal, or Real, tennis courts are located in former stables in Davey Street. Built in 1875, the Hobart court was the first in Australia. Royal Tennis had its origins in the streets, monasteries and chateaux of France as early as the 13th century. The game reached England in the mid 14th century but it was not until 1599 that they recorded the rules. Today Hobart has many top players, several of whom have been world champions.

[vote for against The court slants 5 degrees uphill. Because the players change sides every so often, there are now four different states a player can be in: "on serve uphill"; "on serve downhill", "off serve uphill" or "off serve downhill". This is more interesting than just "on serve" or "not on serve". Serving will probably be easier when facing uphill, since there is more room for the ball to land in the court (i.e. a more favorable range of angles to serve the ball which will land it in play). But volleying uphill will be more difficult as the net will be effectively higher. The slopes will also make ball retrieval much easier; ball boys need never run across the court. I am dubbing this sport Royal tennis, to improve the odds that someone will take it seriously.

INTRODUCTION The Mount Royal Tennis Club has been a recognized center of good tennis and conviviality in Montreal for a century. To prosper for this long requires a happy combination of compatible members and well-accepted practices. Over many years, traditions have become established and endorsed by succeeding generations of members for example, predominantly all-white tennis wear and provision of balls by the Club. More recently, policies and rules designed to keep the Club operating smoothly and happily have been clarified and amended. To present all these together in coherent form, the Board of Directors has approved the publication of this website which is intended to provide existing and prospective members with a basic information on the Club's history, policies and regulations.
